Chapter 1 - Dekota
My parents had recently gotten a job transfer from Sydney, Australia to Franklin ,Tennessee. I tried so hard to make them not take the jobs or even to just leave me there to live with my aunt Debbie but of course, that wasn’t allowed. So now here I am standing in a massive house in a town I don’t want to be in, a town where everyone thinks I have an accent and looks at me weird. I’m trying to be happy for my parents sake but I just want to go home, back to my friend and back to the life I’ve know for the last 17 years. Everything different here, the people, the culture and the schooling. I’m pretty sure it’s called junior year or something I haven’t really paid that much attention.
I can hear my parents bickering with each other down stairs but ignore them until I hear my mum calling me “Dekota, come downstairs please and meet our new neighbours”. With a sigh I get up and slowly make my way down stairs. Once I get to the front door I see a woman, a man (obviously her husband) and a girl and boy. “Dekota hunny come here please and meet the Jamison family” my mum waves me over and introduces me “Dekota this is Leslie, Blake and their kids Eva and Drew. Guys this is my daughter Dekota”. We all shake hands and say our hellos when Leslie speak up “Dekota how old are you ?”
“I’m 17” I don’t mean to be short or sound rude but I think that’s kind of how it comes across because my mum elbows me in the side.
“Oh that’s great ! We have another son that will be in the same grade as you when you start up at school. His name is Blain, he couldn’t be here right now because he’s at football training” Leslie says in a happy tone. She seems to be really proud of her son with the hole football thing. I’m pretty sure we have different definitions on football back home to what it is here though but I’ll go along with it. “Oh that’s great. I look forward to meeting him” I say with a smile trying to seem happy about it all. I was a big football fan back home so I wonder if I could possibly get into it here as well.
Blake and my dad Stefano seem to have migrated to the lounge room to sit down and chat whilst Leslie and mum have moved onto the back patio with a bottle and 2 glasses of wine, leaving me in an awkward silence with Eva and Drew. I turn back towards the siblings just at Drew says “this is awkward I don’t even know how to begin a conversation here”. Eva just looked at him like he had grown another head “you usually never shut up but put a pretty girl in front of you and you go mute. Gosh your hopeless, I’m sorry about him being weird don’t mind him”. I just looked between them and said “it’s fine I get it completely. I’m not exactly good in these situations and have no idea where to start”. So we all went outside since it was a really nice day. There’s so much land around here and it’s so quiet I’m not use to this kind of thing. “So where are you guys originally from ? You have an accent but I would probably get it wrong if I tried to guess” Eva spoke as I was looking around. I turned back to face her and said “I’m actually from Sydney, Australia. So everything around here is like a completely different world. There’s no traffic and so much land around”. Drew looked at me funny “is there no land around where you were from ?” I didn’t know how to explain Sydney except for how I do “Sydney is cramped and a lot of houses are built right next to each other, practically on top of one another. You would pay way to much if you had wanted to own a bit of land. I had always wanted to own horses and ride but with the housing how it was, it was virtually impossible”. Eva looked around at the rolling hills and land all around “it’s weird to think that places like that exists after being born here and having all this”. Drew decided to make a comment then that had nothing to do with what we were talking about, making me laugh a bit “you really are pretty. I feel like Blain is going to eat you alive. Just be careful with the people at Franklin High”. “Haha thanks for the compliment I guess but I plan to try keep my head down. At least until I get the hang of things around here”.
All our parents came strolling out of the house together and Blake called his kids over “Eva, Drew common let’s get moving. Blain should be back soon and your mother needs to cook dinner”. Drew looked back at me from where he had started walking to his parents “good luck with everything tomorrow, I’ll probably see you at some point. Eva and I are seniors so we’re a year above. If you need anything don’t be afraid to find us around”. Eva turned them as well “he’s right you know. It’s always good to have someone to go to if anything happens. We’ll catch you around”. I just waved “thanks I’ll take it into consideration. See ya around”.
With that they all walked back to their house and I made my way back into mine. My mum was ordering take out and my dad was in his office doing whatever is is that he does.
After a while food came and we all sat around eating. After I was done I went upstairs and took a shower then going to my room to see what I had to wear to school tomorrow as the school tour starts. As I look down at the outfit I have laid out I just think to myself “damn I hope tomorrow isn’t a crappy day”. I get dressed in the pajamas and get into bed falling asleep in time time at all.
