## Chapter Five: The One Who Came for Her The palace was no longer silent. It was alive with chaos. Red emergency lights pulsed through the corridors like a warning heartbeat. Footsteps thundered in every direction. Voices overlapped—orders, alarms, panic. Aria stood frozen behind Alexander, her heart hammering so hard she could barely hear anything else. “We found the intruder… and he’s asking for her.” The guard’s words still echoed in her mind. Asking for her. Aria swallowed. “…Me?” she whispered. Alexander didn’t answer immediately. His eyes were fixed on the corridor ahead, jaw tense, body already shifting into a protective stance. “Yes,” he said finally. “You.” Kael stepped slightly forward, his expression sharper now. “This just got interesting,” he murmured. Aria shot him a glare. “Everything is interesting to you!” Kael gave a small shrug. “I cope well under pressure.” Another explosion echoed in the distance. The floor vibrated slightly beneath them. Aria flinched. Alexander immediately moved closer, blocking her view of the corridor. “Stay behind me,” he repeated firmly. “I heard you the first time,” she snapped, though her voice shook slightly. Before anyone could say another word, heavy footsteps approached. Multiple. Fast. Armed guards turned the corner, forming a line instantly. And in the center of them… Was a man. Not dressed like a soldier. Not dressed like a royal guard. He wore a dark coat soaked from the rain outside, his hands raised slowly—but not in surrender. Confidence radiated off him in a way that made the guards hesitate instead of attack. Aria’s breath caught. She didn’t know him. But something about him felt familiar in a way she couldn’t explain. The man’s eyes scanned the hallway. And then landed on her. Everything else disappeared. The alarms. The guards. The palace. Only her. “There she is,” he said quietly. Aria stepped back without thinking. “…I don’t know you,” she said quickly. The man smiled faintly. “No,” he agreed. “But I know you.” Alexander’s voice turned cold. “Identify yourself.” The man finally looked away from Aria. His gaze met Alexander’s. And for a moment, the air shifted. Like two forces recognizing each other. “I’m not here for you,” the man said calmly. Kael tilted his head. “That’s disappointing.” The stranger ignored him. His eyes returned to Aria. “I came to take you out of here,” he said. Silence. Aria blinked. “…What?” The guards tightened their grip on their weapons. Alexander stepped forward slightly. “You will not take her anywhere.” The man exhaled softly. “I’m not asking permission.” Tension snapped instantly. Aria’s heart raced. “What is going on?” she demanded. “Why is everyone fighting over me like I’m—like I’m—” She stopped herself. Because she didn’t even know what she was in this situation. The stranger took a slow step forward. And despite the guards aiming weapons at him, he didn’t stop. “Your name is Aria Bennett,” he said. “But that’s not your full story.” Aria froze. Alexander’s expression darkened instantly. Kael watched quietly now, unusually serious. The man continued: “You were not brought to this palace by accident.” Aria’s breath caught. “…What do you mean?” He stopped a few steps away from the guards. Close enough that his voice didn’t need to be raised. “Your mother didn’t just know the royal family,” he said. “She ran from them.” The hallway went dead silent. Aria’s mind struggled to process the words. Ran… from them? “That’s a lie,” she said quickly. “My mother wasn’t—she wasn’t involved in anything like this.” The man shook his head slightly. “She was,” he said. “And she protected you from it for as long as she could.” Alexander’s voice cut in sharply. “That’s enough.” But the stranger didn’t stop. “Your presence here activates something that has been dormant for years,” he said. “A succession clause tied not just to marriage—but to power.” Kael finally spoke. “And you are telling her this… why?” The man looked at Kael briefly. “Because if she stays here,” he said, “she won’t leave alive.” Aria’s stomach dropped. Silence swallowed the entire hallway. Even the alarms felt distant now. Alexander stepped forward. “You are lying,” he said coldly. The stranger met his gaze. “I wish I was.” A heavy pause. Then— He reached into his coat slowly. Guards tensed instantly. “Don’t move!” one shouted. But he ignored them. He pulled out a sealed document. Old. Faded. And stamped with the same royal crest Aria had seen before. He held it out. “Read it,” he said. “Then decide who you trust.” Aria hesitated. Her hands trembled slightly as she looked at Alexander. Then at Kael. Neither of them spoke. Finally, she stepped forward. And took the document. The moment her fingers touched it… Alexander’s voice dropped. “Aria… don’t open that.” But it was too late. She already had. Her eyes scanned the first line. And her entire world collapsed. Because the document didn’t just mention her mother. It listed her name. As a rightful heir to the throne. --- ### Cliffhanger Aria stumbled back. “That’s not possible…” she whispered. The stranger looked at her calmly. “It is,” he said. Then he added: “And now that you know… they will come for you.” Behind them, palace doors began locking one by one. And Alexander said one final sentence: “Welcome to the real war for the throne.”
