The letter that changed everything
## Chapter One: The Letter That Changed Everything Aria Bennett had learned to expect disappointment. It was the one constant in her life. Rainy mornings, broken promises, unpaid bills—she could handle all of it. What she couldn’t handle was hope. Because hope always left faster than it came. She adjusted the strap of her worn backpack and stepped into the small café where she worked part-time after lectures. The smell of coffee beans filled the air, warm and familiar, but it did nothing to calm the knot in her stomach. “Aria, table three needs cleaning,” her manager called without looking at her. “Okay,” she replied softly. She moved quickly, wiping down the table where a rich customer had just left. A fifty-dollar tip sat abandoned on the table edge. For a second, she stared at it. That was her transport money for a week. She hesitated… then shook her head. No. She would not steal. Not even from fate. By the time her shift ended, the sky outside had already darkened into a heavy grey. Rain threatened again. Perfect. Aria pulled her jacket tighter and stepped out onto the street, her worn shoes splashing into small puddles. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Landlord: Rent due in 3 days. No excuses. She sighed. “No excuses,” she muttered bitterly. “As if I have choices.” Her mother’s hospital bills still hung over her like a shadow she couldn’t escape. Every day felt like surviving a storm with no shelter. She walked faster. Home was only a small rented room in a crowded building at the edge of the city. Nothing fancy. Nothing stable. Just survival. But as she turned the corner, she noticed something unusual. A black car. Expensive. Polished. Parked directly in front of her building. Aria slowed her steps. Rich cars didn’t belong here. And neither did the man standing beside it. He wore a dark tailored suit, his presence calm but commanding, like he didn’t need to speak for people to listen. His silver watch caught the faint streetlight. He was waiting for her. That realization made her stop completely. “Aria Bennett?” he asked. His voice was smooth. Controlled. Not unkind—but not warm either. “Yes… who are you?” The man gave a slight nod, as if confirming something. “My name is Edward Hale. I serve the Royal Household of Vale Kingdom.” Aria blinked. “…The what?” He didn’t react to her confusion. Instead, he reached into his briefcase and pulled out a sealed envelope. A golden crest was stamped on the front. A crown. Aria’s stomach tightened. “That must be a mistake,” she said quickly. “I think you have the wrong person.” “There is no mistake,” Edward replied calmly. “I have been instructed to deliver this personally to you.” She didn’t move. The street felt suddenly too quiet. Even the wind seemed to pause. Slowly, she reached out and took the envelope. It was heavier than it should have been. Her fingers trembled slightly as she broke the seal. Inside was a single sheet of paper. Official. Stamped. Signed. Her eyes scanned the first line. And froze. “By royal decree and ancestral agreement, Miss Aria Bennett is hereby recognized as the lawful betrothed of His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Alexander Vale…” The words blurred. She blinked hard. Read it again. No. No, this didn’t make sense. “This is… a joke,” she whispered. “Right? Some kind of scam?” Edward didn’t smile. “It is not a joke, Miss Bennett.” Her grip tightened on the paper. “My mother would’ve told me if something like this existed,” she said sharply. “There’s nothing—no royal family, no prince, nothing!” “There is,” he replied. “And your mother was part of it.” That sentence hit harder than anything else. Aria went still. “My mother?” Edward opened his briefcase again. This time, he pulled out a photograph. Old. Slightly faded. Aria’s breath caught as she took it. It showed a younger version of her mother. Standing beside people she didn’t recognize. A man in a royal uniform. And a woman wearing a crown. The royal family. Her mother was smiling. Like she belonged there. Aria’s hands shook. “No…” she whispered. “This is impossible.” Edward stepped slightly closer. “Your mother was once closely connected to the Vale royal lineage. Before she left… arrangements were made.” “Arrangements?” Aria snapped. “You don’t arrange someone’s entire life like it’s a contract!” “She agreed,” he said quietly. Silence. The rain finally began to fall. Slow at first. Then heavier. Aria stepped back like the world had shifted under her feet. “No,” she said again, firmer this time. “I don’t care what paper you’re holding. I’m not part of any royal story. I don’t even know this prince!” Edward studied her for a long moment. Then he said the words that changed everything. “You will meet him tomorrow.” Aria let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “I won’t.” “You will,” he repeated. “Because the palace has already issued the formal summons.” Her heart dropped. “What summons?” Edward’s expression remained unreadable. “The Crown Prince has been informed of your existence. And he has agreed to meet you under royal protocol.” Aria’s throat tightened. “And if I refuse?” For the first time, something flickered in his eyes. Warning. “Refusal is not considered an option.” The words settled heavily in the air. Aria stared at him, anger rising beneath her shock. “You can’t just drag people into a royal marriage like I’m property.” Edward’s voice lowered slightly. “This is not just a marriage arrangement, Miss Bennett.” He paused. Then added: “This is succession law.” A distant rumble of thunder rolled overhead. Aria looked down at the letter again. At her name beside a crown she never asked for. At a future she never chose. Her life—already fragile—had just cracked open completely. And she had no idea how deep the fall would be. --- That night, Aria couldn’t sleep. She sat on her small bed, the royal letter lying beside her like it was watching her. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the photograph. Her mother… smiling beside royalty. What was she hiding? Why would she never mention this? At exactly 2:13 a.m., her phone suddenly lit up. Unknown Number. She hesitated. Then answered. A pause. Breathing on the other end. Then a voice—cold, calm, male. “I hear you’re my fiancée.” Aria froze. “…Who is this?” A soft exhale, almost amused. “You don’t know me yet.” Another pause. Then the words that made her blood run cold: “But you will.” The line went dead. Aria sat in the darkness, heart pounding. And for the first time in her life… She felt like she had just stepped into something she could not escape. --- ### Cliffhanger The next morning, a royal convoy arrived at her street. And when the doors of the black limousine opened… A man stepped out. Tall. Dangerously calm. And when his eyes landed on Aria, he said only one thing: “Get in. We’re going home.”
