Chapter Three: A step too late?

“I had some work to do here, I thought I could postpone it but turned out it was urgent” Aiden replied his eyes fixed on her. He felt like she had lost a lot of weight, and her eyebrows looked tired not as energetic as they used to appear. He knew she loved to challenge herself but he also felt like she should be cutting herself some slack. She always felt like by accepting help without offering anything in turn, she was being a burden to people. She was also a closed book to a lot of people which was he had always refrained from letting her know his intentions about her, he was scared that she would lock him out or reject him thus Aiden had decided to stay by her side as her friend till she was ready to accept him. Because of the girls gathered around because of Aiden, Nelly who had been neglected by these two friends suggested they go into the car to avoid too much attention and both of them agreed with her and went into the car “how long will you be around for? You didn’t tell me you were coming earlier, I could have exchanged my shift with someone” Diane said pouting she glared at him while Aiden just chuckled at her glare that looked so cute. “you can get to work, I’ll drop you off, I’ll still be around for a while” he said and ruffled her bun a little before focusing on the road back “hey don’t ruin my hair” she said and swatted his hands away as she chatted away with Aiden. Nelly smiled as she looked at both of them. She could tell Aiden’s feelings for Diane but she knew it was not her responsibility to make Diane realize it, she just wished they could get together soon so that Diane didn’t have to face her troubles alone and so that she could allow Aiden assist her more wholeheartedly. She more than anyone else understood the dynamics of the both of them relationship. Aiden was a cautious and rational guy, he was most likely not expressing his feelings out of fear of rejection and also because it was obvious that Diane was not up for matters of the heart yet so he probably decided to keep mute about his intentions. While Nelly didn’t feel like that was wrong, she also felt like he ought to speak up so that Diane doesn’t keep seeing him as a brother and then finally feel too weird developing such feelings for him. Diane’s work place wasn’t so far from their school and they arrived their quite quickly after a brief side hug, she waved bye at Aiden and Nelly and went to work. After changing her clothes and signing in, Diane got to work immediately. “When do you plan to let Diane know how you feel about her?” Nelly asked as soon as Diane left. Aiden studied her face for a while, he didn’t expect that she would have noticed he had feelings that were beyond friends for Ane ‘does Ane know too?’ he wondered “I’m not sure she’s ready for that yet” he said looking away from her and started the car “she might never get to be ready if you don’t speak up, sooner or later, she will have to be with someone” Nelly paused as she thought of the best way to phrase what she wanted to say next “by then, she might not be able to bring herself to have this type of feelings for you” she said. Aiden hand shook and he brought the car to an abrupt stop with a loud screech “what do you mean?” he asked his eyebrows scrunched up and he glared at Nelly “what??!!” Nelly shrugged her shoulders raising her eyebrows at him, ‘he can’t be so dumb as to not understand what I mean right?’ she thought. “What do you mean by her not being able to have feelings for me?” he asked his voice a different degree lower than what she was used to. “It’s pretty normal, she has known you for five years and regards you as her brother and best friend. Any longer and she won’t be able to change her feelings from seeing you that way to having to see you as a boyfriend or lover.” She explained feeling like this version of Aiden was too scary, she didn’t want to be in the car with him any longer. “So you have to act fast” Nelly said as she opened the door alighting from the car and leaving him alone to his thoughts. Diane’s shift lasted for four hours, and after four hours of standing and walking on stilettos, Diane was pretty much exhausted. She went to the back room for workers and changed back to the dress she had worn to work today, repacked her hair and carried her bag. After a quick goodbye to her coworkers, she left the restaurant. She planned to get some dinner at a nearby café since she didn’t want to spend much, a car honked at her as she wanted to cross to the other side of the street. She stopped to let the car go and was surprised when the car stopped in front of her. With the light of the car going off, she realized it was the car Aiden had used to drop her off earlier so she bent a little to see who was in the car. “do you need a royal decree to get in” Aiden said as soon as she bent down, he had only just wound the window of the car down “so I’m supposed to get into any car that looks like yours” she retorted as she entered the car. “What are you doing here?” she asked as she fastened her seatbelt “had some things to do around this area, figured I could wait some few minutes since it was near your close hours” he said flashing her one of his brightest smiles.
