Chapter 31 Friday morning—market day. The sun shone from a clear blue sky, and only a soft breath of wind ruffled the flags in the square as we were setting up the marquee. It was almost noon, and the market was due to begin at five o’clock, with the judging of the orecchiette scheduled for eight pm. My stomach bubbled with nervous energy as Francesca and I fixed the legs of the marquee with pavers and set up the long benches for the servery and the food preparation.
