Chapter 1: A Wedding She Never Wanted Emily Carter stared at the document in her trembling hands. Her heart pounded wildly as she read the bold words printed across the top of the page. "Marriage Contract." For a moment, she thought she was dreaming. Just twenty-four hours ago, she had been living her ordinary life. She worked long hours, struggled to pay bills, and did everything she could to support her mother and younger brother. Life wasn't easy, but at least it was hers. Now, everything had changed. She stood inside the luxurious office of Alexander Knight, the most powerful billionaire in the city. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the glittering skyline, while expensive artwork decorated the walls. The office alone was larger than her family's entire apartment. Emily swallowed hard. "This is ridiculous," she whispered. Across the room, Alexander leaned back in his leather chair. His expensive black suit fit him perfectly, making him look every bit the ruthless businessman the media always talked about. His cold gray eyes never left her face. "You have two choices, Miss Carter," he said calmly. "Sign the contract or face the consequences." Emily felt anger rise inside her. "Consequences?" she repeated. "You can't force me into marriage." A faint smile appeared on Alexander's lips. "Can't I?" Emily hated how confident he looked. Three days ago, she had never even met Alexander Knight. Then one terrible mistake changed everything. Her father had borrowed money from the wrong people before his death. A huge debt remained unpaid, and now dangerous creditors were threatening her family. She had been desperately searching for a solution when fate pushed her directly into Alexander's path. The billionaire had offered to clear every debt. In return, he wanted one thing. Marriage. It sounded insane. A powerful billionaire could have any woman he wanted. Why would he choose her? "There must be another way," Emily said quietly. Alexander stood and slowly walked toward her. She refused to let him see how nervous she was. "What exactly do you get from this marriage?" she asked. For the first time, something strange flashed in Alexander's eyes. "It solves a problem." But before she could ask another question, her phone vibrated. Her heart dropped when she saw the caller ID. It was the hospital. Quickly, she answered. The doctor's voice made her blood run cold. "Miss Carter, your mother's condition has worsened. She needs treatment immediately." Emily's world shattered. The treatment cost more money than she could ever afford. Tears filled her eyes. When the call ended, silence filled the room. Alexander watched her carefully. "You need help," he said. Emily hated that he was right. Every instinct told her to walk away. But her family needed her. Her mother needed her. Slowly, she looked down at the contract once more. The paper felt heavier than stone. Signing it would change her life forever.
