"I'm done." I looked over to Justin and showed him the bottom of my coffee, I didn't need to since he had literally stared at me eating and drinking the entire time, but now that I'd confirmed it with him he had no reason to stay here anyway, I could see the discomfort on his feet with the ice of every second grow worse, and it seemed to put I'm in an even more foul mood. "Let's not waste any time then." Justin gestured at me already on his way to getting up so I had to get out of his way. "Excuse me," Diane came and stopped in front of me as soon as we were standing, taking my hand and pulling me, surprisingly Justin was better at guarding than he let off and stepped toward us ready to take action but after I held out my hand he stopped and huffed. "Relax, it's okay," I said to him and watched as his eyes narrowed at us. "Is he abusing you?" She asked when she thought we were out of earshot. "Shouldn't you get the police involved?" "He isn't that kind of person though, we just had a disagreement over... the cake is all." I lied, but she wasn't buying it, especially after I held on to the spot he'd held on to, I could feel the bruise beneath my sweater, and she must've picked up on it because she shook her head and placed her hands akimbo with a concerned sass about her. "Look, I don't know what's going on, but I know it is far from okay, but you ain't gonna get any help if you can't even say it for yourself." She dropped her attitude and reached for my phone. "Can I?" She asked and I nodded, watching as she saved her name and number. "Cute face like yours is wasted on a jerk like him," She smiled at me. "If you ever need anything give me a call, I'll drop my cakes like hot bread and come running." "Wha-" I stuttered before breaking out in laughter, it wasn't every day you heard someone say some dumb s**t like that to you. "Okay, I'll keep that in mind." I kept laughing as I waved and walked away toward Justin who had a surprisingly docile look on his face as I approached. "You have a nice laugh." He commented opening the door and allowing me to walk past. "OH my gosh was that a compliment from his highness?" I looked back at him with fake shock and saw his jaws clenched again in annoyance. "Do you ever dial down your attitude?" He asked and I felt my stomach flutter as the pendant shook for a brief second. "Do you ever dial down YOUR attitude?" I asked back, and got a huff out of him as a response before we both fell back in silence. "Mikayla." I heard a call and stopped dead in my tracks as I saw Jason standing before us, but his expression was bothered, and he looked a lot like Justin always did. "Let me see your hand." He stepped toward me, how he'd know was a complete mystery, but as soon as he said it without even realizing I grabbed onto the sleeve and put my hand behind my back like a child, somehow I just knew nothing good would come of him being this upset. "No." I stepped back but ended up bumping into Justin. "It wasn't a question." Jason grabbed my arm and yanked it from behind me, then roughly raised the sleeve revealing the bruise in the form of a handprint, he raised my hand and looked at it closely, and the longer he stared the more violently the pendant around my neck vibrated. "Hey calm down we can't do anything in public like this," Justin spoke tamely to his brother but Jason grit his teeth and turned me around to face Justin. "Do you think I'd actually stay calm after seeing this?" He asked and Justin looked to the side with an air of nonchalance, clicking his tongue and stuffing his hands in his pockets. "Stay f*****g calm bro," Justin spoke in a tone of warning as he looked at his brother from his peripheral. "The alternative was killing her, so be glad that bruise is all I did, she should know her place." As soon as he said it Jason exploded with anger, stepping passed me and grabbing his brother by the collars shaking him so hard his feet raised off the ground for a brief second, but Justin being the hothead he was retaliated by grabbing his brother's shirt and pushing back against him. "She's mine, Justin, don't ever lay your f*****g hands on her again!" "You know Jason," Justin closed his eyes and then opened them back again, exuding a calm appearance even though the pendant started shaking so hard it was making my skin numb, all the anger he was feeling was apparent when his eyes settled on me. "You still haven't done or said anything to make up for or explain what you did to Samantha, did you forget, she was mine." He reminded Jason while staring me in my eyes as he did and then lowered his hands just as I saw Jason's shoulders relax and his grip on the shirt loosen before he also let his brother go, who the hell was Samantha, was that the girl he'd said was killed by his brother? "You should be glad that I didn't kill her as soon as you marked her." "Don't ever do it again." Jason turned and took my hand, pulling me along back to the main building. The way he just let it go told me that this Samantha was likely important to both of them, the fact that Samantha had died and it being Jason's fault put them at odds, by the way, Justin reacted, it was clear he'd have already killed Jadon if they weren't Alphas as well as bothers, so I was more than curious to know who she was, maybe she was the love of their lives... maybe I was going to die just like she did, maybe I was another tragedy in their path, this was purturbing, but since it was a touchy topic I knew I wouldn't be able to simply ask about her. It became awkward after that, they were clearly upset with each other, they never spoke a word to the other, but they were basically inseparable as if their minds were on the same wavelength they did everything simultaneously, though only slightly different than each other, it was especially awkward when I had to sit between them, they never said a word of hostility but every time I moved it was like I was being stared at by two sharks trapped in a cage, I didn't even want to breathe too hard, I had to do something about it because I could not focus for a second during the first lecture. "I read that werewolves like to eat the hearts of their victims before they die, that they rip the heart out and force their victims to watch them eat it while they die." I looked at Jason, and he passed me back a slightly shocked and disgusted look. "What the f**k kinda history with werewolves do the hunters have to come up with something that mental?" He asked and I raised an eyebrow. "So you don't kill people?" I asked, and both he and Justin scoffed at the same time. "Of course we kill people, even people kill people, but we're not monsters, normally." He tacked on the last bit after a pause and reached for my arm gently peeling back the sleeve to reveal the bruise again. "Does it hurt?" He asked, and I heard a scoff on the other side, but when we looked around Justin was paying attention to someone in front of us playing games on their laptop instead of doing the research. "Of course it does, but it's nothing I can't handle," I replied placing my hand to cover it when I caught someone behind us glimpsing down at us. "I'll get you something for it later." Justin had his eyes locked on the computer still but he was definitely talking to us. "I doubt an ice pack will do any good, it'll heal on its own." "I'm not talking about an ice pack, it is more of an ointment." He replied, and I figured they might have had something special with them, of course, that made sense, if witches were more common amongst the ranks of vampires, then werewolves were known for keeping alchemists around. "Oh." I conformed to that little explanation and tried paying heed to the class again now that a little of the atmosphere had been cleared because of the icebreaker I made up on a whim. But my attention was completely occupied by the fact that Jason was still holding on to my hand. "Can you let go now?" I asked quietly, but instead of letting go he put his other hand over my shoulder and pulled me closer to himself, then dropped that hand around my waist and looked out the window. "Stay like this for a while." Jason softly spoke leaving no room for refusal as he held on to me firmly, but at the same time gently, as if I was a flower he didn't want to break. "I heard there was some kind of fair in the town later, you wanna go?" Jason asked out of the blue and I paused in my thoughts at the question. "Like, a date?"
