The arrival
The iron gates of Eclipse Magic Academy groaned open as if they were alive. Liora Veyne stood at the entrance, gripping the straps of her worn bag. The wind around her felt strange—charged, almost aware—like the air itself was watching her decide whether she belonged here or not. She didn’t. Not in a place where students wore silk-trimmed robes that shimmered with spellwork, and where floating lanterns guided the path to marble towers carved with ancient runes. Liora adjusted her plain dark cloak and stepped forward anyway. “Name?” a voice asked sharply. A woman stood behind a crystal desk near the gate, her eyes glowing faint gold as she scanned Liora without lifting a hand. “Liora Veyne,” she replied. The woman paused. “Scholarship candidate… from the Outer District?” A few students nearby turned to look. Their whispers followed like shadows. “That’s her?” “They actually let someone from there in?” Liora kept her face blank. She had learned long ago that reacting only gave people more reason to strike. The woman stamped something in the air, and a glowing mark appeared on Liora’s wrist—silver and pulsing softly. “Welcome to Eclipse Magic Academy,” she said flatly. “Try not to die in your first week.” Liora didn’t know if it was a joke. No one laughed. Inside, the academy was overwhelming. Staircases moved on their own. Doors whispered when she passed. Somewhere above, lightning flickered inside glass towers even though the sky was clear. A group of students passed her, and the air temperature dropped instantly. One of them—tall, elegant, with icy blue hair—smiled faintly. “She looks breakable,” he said. Liora continued walking. Breakable was better than noticeable. She followed the glowing marks in the air until she reached her assigned dorm corridor. The walls were lined with portraits that blinked when she passed, their painted eyes tracking her movement. Her room was small, but private. A single bed, a desk, and a window showing the academy’s vast training grounds where spells exploded like fireworks in the distance. Liora dropped her bag and exhaled for the first time since arriving. Then the window cracked. Not from impact—but from pressure. The glass shimmered, distorting like water, and the temperature in the room dropped sharply. Liora stepped back. Something was outside. No—someone. A shadow stood on the ledge of the opposite tower. Too still. Too precise. Even from this distance, she could feel it: immense magic, tightly controlled, like a blade held just before striking. The figure turned his head slightly. And even though she couldn’t see his face clearly, Liora felt it. He was looking directly at her. The air between the towers trembled. Then—he was gone. Just like that. The pressure vanished, leaving her room silent again. Liora stood frozen. “What… was that?” she whispered. A knock came at her door. She hesitated before opening it. A girl stood there, smiling brightly, completely unaware of the tension that had just filled the room. “Hi! You must be the new scholarship student! I’m Mira. I came to warn you.” “Warn me about what?” Mira leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Don’t go near the upper east tower.” Liora frowned. “Why?” Mira’s smile faded slightly. “Because that’s where Kael Draven lives.” The name landed like a warning spell. Even the air seemed heavier at the sound of it. “He doesn’t talk to anyone,” Mira continued. “But if he looks at you… it usually means trouble.” Liora glanced back at the window. The ledge was empty now. But she could still feel it—like a presence had marked her without permission. “Thanks for the warning,” Liora said quietly. Mira hesitated, then added, “Try not to stand out too much. People like him… notice things that shouldn’t be noticed.” She left. Liora closed the door and leaned against it. Outside, the academy hummed with magic, laughter, and distant explosions of training spells. But inside her room, one thought wouldn’t leave her mind. She had been seen. And something told her… It wasn’t an accident.
