: --- When I began to write in praise of you, Some verses remained incomplete. I wrote of your enchanting eyes, And your earrings sulked in jealousy. When I started penning your praises, The charm of your grace whispered secrets in my ears. My pen of emotions began with your beauty, But the words from your lips stole everything I had. But what could he do? Zarina was nowhere to be seen, and the sound of approaching footsteps in the street grew closer. His heart urged him to go to her house, but it wasn’t possible. Having come so close, returning without seeing Zarina didn’t feel right to Manveer either. In front of Zarina’s house lay a dilapidated, abandoned structure. A large pile of bricks was stacked high, filled with stones, debris, and all sorts of rubble. It looked like an overgrown thicket. Gathering his courage, Manveer climbed onto the pile of bricks, from where Zarina’s house was clearly visible. He stood atop the pile, but Zarina was nowhere in sight. He carefully scanned every corner of her house, but Zarina was not to be seen. Meanwhile, the sound of footsteps in the street grew even closer. In his restlessness to catch a glimpse of her, Manveer tried to stand taller on the pile. But no matter what, Zarina’s sight eluded him. As someone approached the street, Manveer quickly hid behind the pile of bricks, concealed by the tall grass and weeds. As soon as the person passed by, Manveer climbed back onto the pile of bricks and stones. He stood there for a while, yearning for a glimpse of Zarina. He was afraid someone might see him, but the ache in his heart to see Zarina was stronger. He didn’t want to return without seeing her. For a long time, he stood there, his eyes fixed on her house. After what felt like an eternity, Zarina emerged from the bathroom, having bathed. Manveer’s gaze locked onto her. To his longing eyes, it was as if the greatest joy in the world had been granted. Zarina looked even more beautiful to Manveer now. Her dark, cloud-like tresses, her fair complexion, her graceful figure—it was as if they were giving Manveer a reason to live. When Zarina took slow, gentle steps, she seemed even more enchanting to him. Her vibrant, blossoming youth made Manveer ache with longing. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. The black suit she wore against her fair skin made her youthful beauty even more captivating. Manveer’s heart urged him to rush to her side and confess all the feelings in his heart. Gazing at her, he slipped into deep dreams of her love. To Manveer, it felt as if Zarina was truly standing beside him. For how long he stood there, lost in dreams of her love, he didn’t know. Suddenly, his foot slipped on the bricks, and as he tried to steady himself, he tumbled down. He looked around for Zarina, but there was nothing but grass and weeds. He climbed back onto the pile to look again, but Zarina was no longer in the courtyard. Thinking of her, he made his way back home. Even on the way, his thoughts were consumed by Zarina. Her dark tresses, her fair complexion—they had stolen his peace entirely. Day and night, Manveer now dreamt only of Zarina. Under any pretext, he would circle her house, but every time, he failed to catch a glimpse of her. Yet, the fire in his heart to see her burned even brighter. What could he do? How could he go to her house? Zarina wasn’t even coming to school anymore. How could he see her? Zarina’s closest friend was Sweep, and Manveer knew she could help him meet Zarina. Manveer and Sweep lived near each other, and their families were on good terms, often visiting each other’s homes. Sweep would frequently come to Manveer’s house. One day, as Sweep was heading there, Manveer stopped her near the room outside the haveli. He pleaded with her to arrange a meeting with Zarina. Sweep, innocent and kind-hearted, was swayed by Manveer’s words. His heartfelt pleas melted her heart, and she agreed to talk to Zarina. Manveer sent a message through Sweep: he just wanted to talk to Zarina once. Zarina initially refused to meet, but Sweep convinced her to agree to one meeting. Zarina agreed to meet near an old hut on the path between the gurudwara and the mosque, but she insisted they would only talk from a distance. When I began to write in praise of you, Some verses remained unfinished. I described the beauty of your eyes, And your earrings grew jealous and sulked. When I started writing of your charm, Your graceful ways whispered secrets in my ears. My pen of emotions was inspired by your beauty, But the words from your lips stole all that I am. ---
