Chapter 1
It was on the eve of her seventeenth birthday. She strode towards her parent's quarters. She walked quietly as she admired the landscape of the pack. The moon glowed brightly and cast a beautiful spectacle on the numerous werewolf lodges. She had lived here all her life and this was home. Voices emanating from her father's room halted her abruptly. The furious whispers froze her tightened fists from knocking. It was her mothers voice; "Lucian, you can not do this" . More harsh, quiet whispers in which she couldn't make a word of. She knocked and entered. The entire room became still. She went to her father. His build still terrified her in an exciting way as it had in the first sixteen years of her life. He was a big man, the biggest man in their pack. He stood tall, with very broad shoulders, a powerful set of jaws and deep brown surreal eyes which seemed to see through anyone. He was tough, very brave and fearless. Confidence seemed to ooze out of his very core. A fierce and ruthless wolf when he turns. The strongest wolf there was in the Achilles pack. Story had it that he had single handedly protected the pack from a group of hounds who had strayed into their territory with intent to kill off the pack. They had met their ends at the claws of Lucian. His father had been killed then and he had thereafter assumed the position of Alpha. He looked unsettled. She gazed at her mother who was a sharp contrast to her father. The Luna was a small, delicate, gentle and soft spoken woman whose eyes held no emotions. Underneath the gentility though, lay a fierce wolf and warrior. The Alpha had often told the story of how he knew she was his mate the instant he caught her scent and heard her howl during one of the park"s hunting prowls. "Ashina, you are supposed to be in bed, '' her mother said. Ashina could feel the tense atmosphere. She had a little inkling as to what the problem was. The feral pack, who were their direct rivals had abducted one of the pack members, Eva, the beta's niece; a girl who the Alpha of the feral pack had set his eyes on. "Mother, what is the matter?" Nothing to worry about, child. "Father, what is going on?" The Alpha smiled and pulled her close. "It is nothing, just a matter that needs urgent attention" "You turn seventeen tomorrow. You have made me a proud father. I love you". He smiled and stood, "I will be on the terrace". He strode out with a graceful slide which he alone was known for. "Mother, I am not a child, I am a grown woman, I deserve to be let into what is happening". Luna exhaled and turned to her daughter. "Your father is planning a raid on the feral pack to rescue Eva, to do this is to reopen old wounds". "It was bloody last time, if anything happens to the Alpha. If happens, we are done for". "This pack cannot survive even under the leadership of the beta. I have tried dissuading him from attacking the Feral pack but he is losing patience; I fear he might do something drastic". The Luna said and stood up. She paced around the room, worrying lines drawn on her face. "Mother, he must rescue Eva, if a raid is the only option, so be it". Ashina said, her father"s daughter. "No, it can still be resolved through dialogue and negotiations," Luna, ever the diplomat, said. "Remember what happened last time, mother"? She was thirteen when her father had left with a few of the pack members. They had gone to negotiate on a dispute with the feral pack not knowing they were being talked into a trap. It was indeed bloody. The Alpha had been mortally wounded and the pack had kept watch for a full moon. The other wolves who sustained minor wounds had all healed immediately. Preparations had already been in place for the beta to assume the Alpha"s position when Lucian"s fever broke and he healed from his wounds. "It was different then. The feral pack is now under a new Alpha". Her mother's voice jolted her back into reality "Mother, it makes no difference. It will be a matter of "no warning given, no mercy shown". "I for one, don't want to see my father and the Alpha dead. If we don't do anything, we would be seen as weak and if we tried negotiating, we would be seen as weak, so, we fight." Luna knew her daughter was right, yet she didn't want any bloodshed. "Goodnight mother". Ashina said and left hurriedly. Ashina had a warrior's heart. She was tall, she had her father"s eyes, the same powerful jaws and her mother's full black hair which graced past her shoulders. She had a warrior's build like her father, elegant and a beauty to behold. She was a regal werewolf. She had a certain aura around her that oozes power and authority. There was a certain elegance she exuded around her which couldn't be missed. A fierce and confident wolf like her father. She turned the knob of her room"s door and lay quietly while listening to the howling of other wolves in the distance. Her thoughts drifted to when she had first turned. Born by two wolf parents, she was a pure wolf and was expected to turn at the age of thirteen. She was six when she turned; amidst the strange stares. She was always seen as a weird wolf. However, she was not treated any differently from members of her peers because of her father"s position. Ashina remembered being watched on all nights for nine full months after she had turned. She smiled as she remembered the look of bewilderment and concern on her father"s face as he watched her transformation. She had listened as her mother whispered to her father that there was more to her turning than meet the eye. She didn"t dispute them, there were times when she felt far removed from things around her, like she lived in a world of her own; had the world at her tips. She knew it was weird, at least for a "normal" wolf. She rolled on her bed while still dwelling on old memories. She finally drifted into a troubled sleep. Lucian stood by the terrace and gazed towards the far side of Achilles' pack. He sighted some wolves who kept watch. He was deeply troubled. He had always strained to respect wolf boundaries. He was not troublesome and was protective of those protective of him. The Feral pack had stirred something in him. How dare Conri cross him; "Conri" was the Alpha of the Feral pack. Lucian felt a gnawing feeling inside him. He knew that there lay troubled times ahead; he felt it, dark webs spinning around his head, ready to drag him in. He thought of his Beta, who had kept distance of late. He couldn"t blame him; he was only bidding time, being cautious to avoid bringing bloodshed. Deep inside him, Lucian didn"t trust his Beta, he kept him at hand only because of how powerful both of them were together. He knew that any form of attack on the Feral pack may result in his death and he shuddered at the thought of leaving his pack at the mercy of his ambitious Beta. A chilling howl at the other side of the pack brought him out of his brooding. He stepped into his lodge to join his Luna.
