Chapter 11

Maracar now lay before me, dead. I watched the flames take him as the battle behind me ended. The adventurers had lost. Phase 1 of the plan had gone well, despite Seth and Carmelia not being aware of it. Treachery was something I felt before, but I would not endure again. I walked my way back to the villagers, Luna and the others. Among them were the fallen adventurers. It seemed Maracar had sent way more than just the ones he had originally been with. The guild master probably wanted to ensure that we were dead or had noticed Seth and Carmelia departure. A few of the villagers seemed slightly scathed but nothing signficiant, probably because of the Whistling Wolf Luna. “Whats going on?” Seth asked me his sword rose towards the villagers not sure what to make of them. “The adventurers were planning to betray us, Seth. The people in the town don’t like the villagers, they don’t like us. We were a disposable pawn after this battle they planned to kill me or the remains of the Whistling Wolf and then you.” Luna nodded and came to my side as Caremila and Seth took in what I said. “We laid an ambush for them here and caught them off guard.” Luna interjected. “The empire has been leaving the villagers alone for the most part because of the name of the Whistling Wolf.” “That’s why Maracar wanted us to come back so quickly to the town,” Seth muttered, lowering his sword. “It’s normal for the town to take away from the villagers their harvest and whatever they have. They only see us at the bottom and they above us. So no one really enforces anything unless they see it as a threat to themselves,” Oliver said. “Since I came here so many men and women went missing travelling with supplies or food with no investigation by the town,” Luna said. “The only thing they wanted was to milk the villagers dry with the taxes.” However, all of those taxes I took back from them and gave it back to as much of the villagers that I could off.” “Father,” Seth muttered, “he never came back, Reno.” I placed my hand on Seth’s shoulder. “We will have answers soon.” “How are you so sure?” Seth asked.  “Because we are going to take the town.” Turning to Luna and the other villagers. “Are you ready to move out?” “Yes,” she replied, “we are all ready too.” “What?” Seth replied, “How many innocent people are going to get hurt like this.” “Innocent,” Oliver said. “They are hardly any innocent people in there. We are only fighting for our own freedom.” I saw the faces of Seth and Caremila looking at me. “We are going to take the town for the villagers and for their safety. We have sent word to let them know.” “Reno, but---.” “It’s not like we have much of a choice Seth, do you want to be hunted your entire life or Mom to be in danger because of us?” “No.” “Reno is right, Seth, we have to do this,” Caremila said. Seth relented as he silently nodded his head. “Please promise me, Reno, that no innocent people will end up being hurt.” “I promise,” I said. We marched in quick time back to the town and as it appeared on the horizon. We waited for the villagers to gather from all the neighbouring villages as the town realized it was being besieged they tried their best to barricade themselves inside. The villagers shouted at the top of their lungs as they charged forth. A howl blazed beside me as we stormed the town.
