Chapter 7

The night had past safely. Those bandits were nothing more than starving villagers. The town as it appeared looked like we had entered a different era altogether. The last time I had seen a town, it was ablaze and hell hounds ran amuck. Maracar stood up as the cart came to a halt. “Welcome to the town of Pieranato,” the mage Maracar said as he took a bow. Caremila smiled. Her head darting around left to right as we stopped outside what based on the swords crossing outside was the guild. “Is this it?” Seth asked as the adventurers got off their horses. “Yes, Seth, I have to relay what happened and then you can come in. Wait here for now with them,” he replied as he scurried inside. Many people were looking at us deep in whispered conversation and from a few glances at their clothes and ours I understood why. We looked like an oddity in our clothes that resembled the bandits from before. Caremila scratched her head. “I can see why father never used to enjoy coming here. There is so much disdain in their eyes.” “Do you think Father is here, Seth?” “I don’t know it’s been a while, and he didn’t return. He probably had to go further to make back the money of the supplies. It’s not uncommon for it to take a while. The entire village is depending on him to make back the money on the crops.” Hmmm I nodded as I looked at the archer mounted on the horse looking over us. He spat on the ground in response. “What’s his problem,” Caremila whispered. I whispered back, “He ran away with terror from a monster than kids killed.” Caremila chuckled as she rubbed up against me. “You know Reno you’re amazing but you still haven’t told me why you didn’t come for me. Was it because you deep down inside feared for my safety?” “No.” Caremila hand slapped my face. Seth chuckled in response. I rubbed my face. “What was that for?” Seth placed his hand on my shoulder. “I don’t think Reno wanted to expose you to any danger in the slightest. He has always been someone to stand up for himself.” “Is that---.” “Bring the children and come the guild master would like to see them,” Maracar said to the others. We walked through the doors to be greeted with a hall of tables with adventurers seated around them. They were in discussion, but as we entered their voices hushed, observing us as we took the stairs to the top. An old man sat before us on one end and Reno and me on the other. “I heard many things about you from Maracar that you two defeated the Troll King.” His eyes moved from Seth to me. “Maracar and the others were the best that the guild had here and if you didn’t intervene well, I couldn’t imagine what would have happened to the rest.” Maracar scratched his head. “I have a new task for you, consider it the first of joining the guild. It is to defeat the Whistling Wolf. The empire could not gather taxes in the area and surrounding villages for months now. This is because of the stream of bandits joining the Whistling Wolf Host.” “A bandit?” Seth said, “Why is that so difficult?” “Some say, it’s the bandit’s god,” an adventurer in the room responded. “No one has seen what that person or persons looked like. We have sent out many adventurers almost the entire guild at one point and everyone lost. The only thing they heard was the whistling of the arrow that knocked their weapons out of hand and the howling of the wolves.” Maracar interjected. “Many of the empire’s troops have also been unsuccessful trying to find them.” The Guild master brought out a map of the surrounding area. “This choke point here is where we believe they operate. What would you need?” “Spells, I will need more spells.” A howl echoed in the distance, causing those in the room to shudder as some turned to the window. The Whistling Wolf was here.
