Scary and dark
The Terminal Stalker Mara’s fingers danced across her laptop keyboard, her gaze flicking between the flight schedule on her screen and the muted television in the corner of her modest apartment. Work as a freelance travel coordinator often meant long nights and endless cups of coffee. Tonight was no different, except for the faint, gnawing unease that had been her silent companion for weeks. At first, it was subtle—random calls with no one on the line, the feeling of being watched as she walked home, and strange shadows lingering just beyond the streetlights. Mara tried to convince herself it was nothing more than her imagination, but the pit in her stomach said otherwise. Her phone buzzed. A text message from an unknown number lit up the screen: “You look lovely in red tonight.” Mara froze. Her heart thudded painfully against her ribs as she glanced down at her oversized red hoodie. Adrenaline surged. She bolted to the window and peered through the blinds, but the street below appeared deserted. --- Two weeks earlier, her ex-boyfriend Darren had finally stopped calling. Their breakup had been messy. His possessiveness and manipulative tendencies had made the relationship unbearable. Mara had moved to a new city to escape him, changing her number and even her habits, yet the text confirmed her worst fear: she wasn’t truly free. What she didn’t know was that Darren had gone further than she imagined. Consumed by rage and rejection, he had hired someone—someone with a dark reputation. A man known only as “Locke,” a predator who thrived in shadows and silence. --- The days passed in a blur of paranoia. Locks were changed, cameras installed, and yet the texts continued. Each one was more invasive, each one confirming that whoever was watching her was getting closer. Late one night, Mara woke to the sound of a floorboard creaking. She bolted upright, clutching the pepper spray on her nightstand. Her heart pounded as she listened intently. Another creak, closer this time. She slid out of bed and crept to her closet, where she had stashed a baseball bat. Just as her fingers closed around the handle, a figure emerged from the darkness—a tall man with hollow eyes and a jagged scar running down his cheek. He held a knife, its blade gleaming faintly in the moonlight. “Hello, Mara,” Locke rasped, his voice like gravel. Mara’s instincts took over. She swung the bat with all her strength, connecting with Locke’s shoulder. He stumbled but didn’t fall. Instead, he grinned—a predator toying with his prey. “You can’t run,” he said. “Darren sends his regards.” The mention of her ex’s name ignited a fire in Mara. All the fear, the anger, the months of sleepless nights—it boiled over. She swung again, aiming for his head this time. The bat struck with a sickening crunch. Locke dropped the knife and collapsed to his knees, blood streaming down his face. Mara didn’t stop. She couldn’t. Her survival depended on making sure he wouldn’t get back up. When it was over, Locke lay motionless on the floor, his lifeless eyes staring into nothingness. Mara’s breath came in ragged gasps as she stepped back, trembling. She knew she couldn’t stay. The police would have questions she couldn’t answer, and Darren’s reach might extend further than she imagined. Gathering only the essentials, Mara fled into the night, leaving behind the life she had built. --- Months later, in another city, Mara sat in a quiet café, her hair dyed a darker shade and her name changed to Sara. She carried the scars of that night, both visible and invisible, but she was alive. She had won. As she sipped her coffee, she glanced out the window, her eyes scanning the street with practiced vigilance. For now, she was safe. But the memory of Locke’s lifeless grin haunted her still, a reminder of how close she had come to losing everything. Darren had underestimated her. He had sent a monster to break her, but instead, he had awakened a survivor.
