Six More Days

1094 Words
Falling fast asleep that night, Aurora did not hear Annie come up the stairs or her climbing into bed. Instead, she woke up to the smell of eggs, hash browns, and bacon cooking. Annie was deep asleep in her bed, and Aurora's stomach was gurgling. She was so hungry, and the smell of the eggs made her even more so. Changing into a fresh set of clothes that Aurora had in a bag stashed in Annie's room. Aurora quietly made her way towards the door and then went downstairs to make herself a plate. Walking through the kitchen door, Aurora could see the refrigerator door open. “Good morning, Sheila. It smells good in here” Aurora said. Charles closed the refrigerator door and turned to look at Aurora. “Not Sheila, but thank you” he said with a big smile on his face. “Oh, I'm sorry Charles, I thought you were Sheila” Aurora said embarrassingly. “No need to apologize, just no Sheila, today. I decided to give her the next few weeks off since her grandmother is in hospice. So no more breakfast chef, I will be doing the morning cooking.” He walked over to the sink and turned on the water to wash his hands. Shortly after, he started to whistle cheerfully. Walking over to the breakfast bar, Aurora sat down where a glass of fresh orange juice was sitting. “Help yourself," Charles said to Aurora. Aurora looked at the glass and then looked at Charles. “Thanks, Charles, it's very nice of you," she said before grabbing the cup and taking a sip. The juice was freshly squeezed. She could taste the sweetness as soon as the juice moved past her lips. It was heavenly. Charles noticed the look on Aurora's face. “Good juice?” he said with a chuckle. “Mmm very much, so.” Aurora said, smiling back at Charles before taking another sip of her orange juice. Charles finished up the cooking while Aurora watched. Everything Charles did was mesmerizing to her. Her obsession for him quietly grew. As he was putting the plates together, Annie walked in through the kitchen door. “Good morning, guys! Six more days till my big one-nine!!” she said, walking over to a countdown calendar she had pinned on the wall. It was placed right next to the fridge. “That's right, Annie, six more days, and you'll be a whole wolf, aren't you excited? To be able to transition and have contact with your other half is truly life changing.” Charles said. Annie was too cheerful to listen to him completely. Charles turned to Aurora, “What about you? Are you excited? You'll be getting your wolf spirit a few days after. That's got to be something to look forward to and graduation, right?” Aurora took another sip of her orange juice and looked up at Charles. He was the only one in her life who supported her choice to continue her education and then fall down the normal path female wolves typically choose.“I guess it's exciting. I'm more excited about graduation and starting up school in the fall. Plus, to be able to meet wolves from other packs sounds like an experience.” Annie sat down next to Aurora. “I'm not that hungry.. Are you almost ready to go? I can walk with you now if you want? I have a lot to do today.. so much to prep for next weekend,” Annie said to Aurora. Annie knew already Aurora was going to give her a hard time with her decision about not going to college after graduation. Aurora knew it, too. “You don't have to walk me, I got it. I've done the walk many times before,” Aurora said to Annie. She knew that if Annie had walked with her home, they were eventually going to have to talk about the elephant in the room. Annie looked at Aurora, and they stared at each other for a moment. Charles interrupted them, “Hey, Aurora, I actually have to head out for a business meeting if you’d like. I can drop you?" He asked while clearing his plate in the sink. “Yeah, maybe you should get a ride today. Then you can get home quicker, and you can email me those notes for our history paper.” Annie said. “Of course, Ans, I'm sure we'd want to get that done before next weekend. Wouldn't want you to have any homework on your big night?” Aurora said to Annie with a wink. Annie smiled and headed out towards her room, while Aurora finished her glass of orange juice and ate her last few bites of hash brown. “Thanks, Charles, breakfast was delicious. You're an excellent cook.” Aurora started to get up, collecting her dishware. “No problem, just leave your plate, I'll get it. Uh, how about we leave in, say, five, maybe ten minutes.” Charles said, grabbing Aurora's plate. “Sure, that sounds good, I'll go get my stuff together now.” Aurora responded before heading out the door to the kitchen and back towards the foyer. She grabbed her things. After shouting up the stairs to say bye to Annie, she went out the front door and to the silver convertible, where Charles was waiting for her. His composure was confident. The site of him was like a candid shot out of a magazine. Aurora couldn't help but feel a certain way to see him sitting there waiting for her. As Charles drove her home, they sat in silence the whole way. "Alright, beautiful. Let me get the door for you."Charles said, reaching across her to grab the door handle and open the door for her. Turning his face in towards hers, his nose glazed slightly over hers. Aurora wanted so badly to put her lips on his but held herself back from her urge. “Thanks for the ride, Charles. It was really nice of you.” Aurora said breathlessly and climbed out of the car as soon as she could. “No problem, Aurora, it's nice to see you. Hope you have a good week.” He said while Aurora quickly grabbed her bags from the back seat of the car. She walked up to the front door, putting the key in the top lock to unlock it. She could hear Charles slowly drive off behind her as she went in through the front door.
