“Be safe,” Shane whispered as he closed the distance between us and pressed his forehead against mine. I held onto him for a moment before I released him.
“Take care of her,” I said, and he nodded as he took a step back. We held eye contact for a moment longer and then he was gone. I watched as he and the others disappeared into the woods. I wanted to be going with them, but I couldn’t. I had a duty here and it wasn’t my place.
