Chapter 1: The Man Who Broke Me
The rain fell in heavy sheets against the glass walls of the café, blurring the city lights into streaks of gold and silver. Olivia Carter wrapped both hands around her untouched cup of coffee, staring blankly outside.
Five years.
Five long years, yet she still couldn't forget him.
She hated herself for it.
"You're zoning out again," her best friend, Mia, said, waving a hand in front of her face.
Olivia forced a smile. "I'm listening."
"No, you're thinking about him."
"I'm not."
"You always lie when you say that."
Olivia sighed. There was no point denying it anymore.
Luca Moretti.
The man who had promised to love her forever... then vanished without a goodbye.
No phone call.
No explanation.
No message.
He simply disappeared, leaving behind memories that refused to fade.
She had cried herself to sleep for months, wondering what she had done wrong. Eventually, she accepted the painful truth—she had meant nothing to him.
So she rebuilt her life.
She finished university, found a good job as an interior designer, and learned to hide the cracks in her heart behind confident smiles.
She was finally moving on.
Or at least, that's what she kept telling herself.
Later that evening, Olivia stepped out of the café.
The rain had stopped, leaving the streets slick and glowing beneath the city lights.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown Number.
She frowned before answering.
"Hello?"
No response.
Only slow breathing.
"Who's this?"
The line went dead.
A chill ran down her spine.
"Probably a prank," she whispered, slipping her phone into her handbag.
She started walking toward the parking lot.
Halfway there, she heard it.
The low growl of expensive engines.
Three black SUVs rolled into the lot and stopped in perfect formation.
Every instinct told her to leave.
The doors opened.
Men in black suits stepped out one after another. Each wore an earpiece, each carried himself like a trained soldier.
People nearby stopped walking.
Even the air seemed to grow heavier.
The bodyguards quickly formed two lines.
Olivia's heartbeat accelerated.
"Who is this?" someone whispered.
"A politician?"
"No..."
"I heard it's someone much more dangerous."
One of the bodyguards opened the rear door of the middle SUV.
A polished black shoe touched the wet pavement.
Then another.
A tall man stepped out.
He wore a perfectly tailored black suit over a dark shirt. A luxury watch gleamed beneath the streetlights.
His sharp jaw was covered with a neatly trimmed beard.
His cold gray eyes swept across the parking lot with quiet authority.
Every person instinctively moved aside.
He didn't ask for respect.
He commanded it.
Olivia's breath caught in her throat.
It couldn't be.
No...
It wasn't possible.
The man slowly removed his leather gloves.
Then his eyes met hers.
Time froze.
"Luca..."
The name escaped her lips before she could stop it.
Five years had changed him.
The warm, smiling young man she once loved was gone.
Standing before her was someone colder.
Harder.
More dangerous.
He looked like a king ruling a kingdom built on fear.
A bodyguard leaned toward him respectfully.
"Boss, the meeting is waiting."
Without looking away from Olivia, the man answered in a calm, commanding voice.
"It can wait."
He took one step toward her.
Then another.
Each step echoed through the silent parking lot.
Olivia's heart pounded so hard she thought everyone could hear it.
He stopped just inches away.
"You've been difficult to find," he said.
His deep voice was calm, almost emotionless.
Olivia swallowed hard.
"You left."
A flicker of emotion crossed his face before disappearing.
"I had to."
"No."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You chose to."
Silence stretched between them.
Finally, Luca spoke.
"I didn't come back to argue."
His piercing gaze locked onto hers.
"I came back for you."
Olivia let out a bitter laugh.
"You don't get to disappear for five years and then decide I'm yours."
His expression never changed.
"You were always mine."
Before she could respond, dozens of headlights suddenly appeared at the entrance of the parking lot.
More black vehicles.
The bodyguards instantly reached for their weapons.
One of them shouted,
"Boss! We've got company!"
Luca's eyes hardened.
"Get her behind me."
Olivia stared at him in confusion.
"What is happening?"
A deafening gunshot shattered the night.
