Chapter 4

2150 Words
Elena’s POV I opened my eyes the next morning feeling spent. The King was already up and standing by the window as sunlight streamed past his sides unto the bed, creating a silhouette. “You’re up already?” I asked, causing him to turn slightly towards me. “Mm,” he replied, “You should get going now that you’re up. “What?” I couldn’t believe my ears. Last night was the most passionate night I’d ever had, he was the first man I’d ever had since… the incident. “You should get going now?” He repeated more audibly, turning completely to me and looking me dead in the eye. I had thought that after last night, things would change, he would change towards me, that he would notice the bond and feel what I felt too. Last night was amazing for the both of us, no doubt, but it clearly meant absolutely nothing to him. “I’m really only a s*x toy to you, aren’t I?” “What else?” I scoffed quietly. I hurriedly put on my robe, grabbed my clothes and left the room. After I had left the room, the tears rolled down freely. I’d try to hold them in with my life. I’d have rather died than let him see them. “Asshole,” I muttered. Of course, the moon goddess had given me an asshole for a mate, classic. I had had it. I was done with the asshole, I couldn’t believe I had offered myself so easily to him just to be noticed. That damned mate bond! Making me do things I never would have. But this was the final straw, I was going to get over him, someway… somehow, I had to. *** Elena’s POV The bustling sound of an incoming feast filled the entire estate. Thorough preparations were going on for the feast of the new moon tonight and everyone was in great spirits, everyone but me. The feast was going to be held in the King’s ballroom and everyone was certain that he was going to appear today and even shift into his wolf form. I hadn’t exactly made a lot of progress in ‘getting over him’ these past two months, but at least I hadn’t been tested by his presence and I was afraid of feeling that vulnerable towards him again when I knew his feelings hadn’t changed towards me. I was still only a s*x toy to him, the one he didn’t even really want to call on for months. “Tonight is going to be difficult.” I muttered to myself as I looked through the window down at the estate. I felt nauseated by all the ruckus suddenly and quickly ran to the bathroom to empty my bowels. It wasn’t the first time I had felt nauseated but this was the first time I was vomiting. I rinsed my mouth when the possibility hit me like bricks. I hadn’t bled in 2 months. My breath seized. I quickly ran out of the room and snuck into Martha’s. I needed to find her kit and get a test strip. With shaky hands and my heart in my throat, I searched frantically till I luckily found one. I ran back into my room and soon after the test, the result was staring me back in the face. I was pregnant. It didn’t take me long to realize what I had to do. Fine, I was frightened and confused, but this was great news. Fine, I never wanted kids, but I had broken the King’s curse. Fine, the father of my child did not love me but he would see me after this news, I would finally become important to him. If this couldn’t make him recognize our mate bond, then nothing else could. I ran to the king but when I got to his wing, I discovered that he was nowhere to be found, so I searched for James. “Elena?” I heard his voice coming from behind me. “James!” I sighed in relief. “Where’s the King? I need to see him, it’s urgent. James looked utterly confused. “He isn’t here at the moment, he’s gone into the city to…” “Please, let him know I came for him when he’s back. Tell him it’s very… urgent” I interrupted. “I will,” James promised, and I turned back to my room. I was probably going to make him the happiest man alive tonight. I couldn’t stop myself from grinning all over. I returned to my caught and the door already opened. When I walked in, I saw Martha sitting on my bed looking at me with my test strip in her hand. I gasped in surprise. “It’s… it’s…”, I stuttered in confusion. “You’re pregnant.” She said calmly with a broad smile on her face. It frightened me. Martha was never calm or nice to me, she despised me. “For the King, right? That’s wonderful!” “Umm…” “You’re going to be queen.” “I don’t…” I started, then stopped. She was right! I had never even thought about it that way. After he has felt the bond, he will mark me and wed me even before the baby is born. “You will! It’s perfect!” She exclaimed, the smile still on her face. “But you don’t look happy, why?” “It’s a long story.” I said, coming to sit next to her. “How about…?” I gestured towards her belly. “Oh!” she smiled awkwardly. “Nevermind about it.” “Whose is it?” I pried. “A fellow servant,” She replied. She was very bad at lying. “Are you keeping it?” I asked, a bit frightened about the answer. “Of course!” She responded abruptly, startling me. “You went to tell the King about his baby?” “Yes, but he’s gone into the city.” “You should at the feast.” I smiled in response, it wasn’t such a bad idea. Suddenly, one of the maids’ heads popped in. “Martha, what are you doing here? We need more hands in the ballroom.” She called. “I’ve got to go now.” Martha said to me. “Make sure you do it tonight.” “I will”, I promised. Something about her felt odd today. Why was she being so friendly with me? Almost immediately, James appeared at the entrance. “He’s back and he’s calling for you.” He said, and my heart made a little leap. It was time. We walked down the hallways together when I saw a tall figure stride towards us. It was William. “Don’t you look lovely?!” He announced with a great smile, exposing his perfect teeth as he approached us. “Excuse me, sir. The King has asked to see her, we are in a haste.” James stated. “It’s ‘my prince’ to you. And you’ll make the time if I command you to.” William corrected, the smile on his face unmoving. “Can I have a word, Ms. Elena?” I turned to James and nodded to him before I replied, “A word.” We went into the gardens for a short walk. I had never been to the gardens. I was fascinated by the colorful insects and even more colorful flowers. William noticed this and plucked a pink rose for me. “I’m probably the only person in this entire kingdom who can understand what you’re going through, you know?” He started. “What do you mean?” I asked. “You and his majesty, your relationship. His majesty can be a very difficult person but you have to persevere, it’s only a matter of days until he figures it out himself.” “You know?” I gasped and he turned to me with a smirk. “Of course, I know.” “How?” “Do you ever wonder why the king remains unmarried?” “Why?” “A few years ago, the king loved the daughter of a butcher, Thelma, but unfortunately, she died and ever since then he has vowed never to love another or take a wife.” He turned to me. “He hates women now but still needs an heir…” He gestured to my belly. “You… how do you…?” I was too baffled for words. “I have ears everywhere, young one. I knew even before you did.” He smiled charmingly. “Though, it frightens me that he may never see your worth. He is not going to keep you or marry you even if he finds out. You know that, right?” “He wouldn’t have a choice. I broke the curse and I’m his mate, we’re fated b…” “Oh, darling. You’re 19, still a child. I can’t blame you, but I say all that I do to protect you because I understand.” He said carefully, edging toward me. “This is all the more reason for him to send you away and keep your child here. He doesn’t want a wife or he’d have married you, all he wants… is an heir.” I had no idea that I’d been shaking my head in denial throughout his statement. “I know him, Elena. I grew up with him, I know what he wants and doesn’t.” He continued and I could feel the hot tears streaming down my cheeks. “Why should I trust you? The King doesn’t get along with you for a reason,” I stated. I knew he was right but I couldn’t afford to believe it. “Do you and the King get along?” He tilted his head, his grey eyes gazing at mine. “N…no…” He was right. I was an i***t to have ever believed that he'd want me. Even after what had happened that night and he had put me aside like a used toy, I still hadn’t learnt. “It’s okay, child.” He tried to wrap his arms around me but I pushed him away and ran back into the mansion. If I was going to get rejected, then let it be today. I still had hope. When I had entered the royal wing, I saw King Raphael in the throne room, seated majestically. His facial expression didn’t crack on seeing me. “You wanted to speak with me urgently.” He motioned powerfully. “I’m p…”, I wanted to say it badly. I wanted to tell him. I wanted him to stand up and run to me with an embrace… but I needed to do something first. “Speak up.” He ordered. “The first night I had come into your chambers, I discovered something strange…” I narrated. “Our mate bond.” At the mention of those three words, his eyes widened and I could see the fear swarm up within that green depth vividly. “I didn’t speak about it because I wanted you to discover it yourself as well. But that’s the truth, we are mat…” “Be silent!” His voice boomed in resonance, almost tipping me off my feet. He got up from his throne. “You are no mate of mine.” He said with spite and my heart shattered. “That’s not true. I’ve seen it, so don’t pretend. You care about me, it’s in the way you look at me. The way you held me that night.” “The way I look at you?” He scoffed ludicrously, “You… are… no… mate… of… mine.” He stepped down and headed to me, taking a step closer with each word, disdain written all over his face. “You are only a slave to me for my s****l desires and a carrier of my children. You are only here to break the curse, so don’t get any silly ideas in that head of yours because you will never be important to me.” At this point, I had heard it all. I dashed out of the mansion with a twinkle of an eye, I couldn’t take it anymore. After all my dreams and hopes? All I had ever wanted was to be seen only for him to still see me as a slave. I ran into the garden and waited until the guests began trooping in for the feast before I took the opportunity to make it out of the estate. The path was dark and lonely, but I was finally free. I was leaving… for good, leaving everything behind with my baby and I never intended to look back.
