Chapter 23: Breaking Into the Dream

860 Words
The dream world trembled violently. The beautiful square near Notre-Dame Cathedral flickered like a broken picture. The glowing lanterns vanished one by one, and the river beside the plaza distorted as if reality itself was tearing apart. Isabelle grabbed Daniel’s hand tightly. “What do we do?” she shouted over the strange rumbling sound that filled the air. Daniel tried to stay calm, even though the situation felt unreal. “The man said we have to hold the dream together,” he said. “But how?” Isabelle asked. Daniel looked around the collapsing dream. Everything they had created earlier—the snow, the lanterns, the peaceful atmosphere—was disappearing. Then he realized something. “This world responds to our thoughts,” he said. Isabelle looked at him. “So?” “So maybe we can stabilize it the same way we changed it.” Isabelle took a deep breath. “Okay… let’s try.” Both of them closed their eyes for a moment. Instead of focusing on fear, Isabelle imagined the square exactly as it had been before. Calm. Beautiful. Safe. Daniel focused on the glowing lanterns floating peacefully above the river. Slowly… The shaking began to weaken. The buildings stopped flickering. The river became clear again. The warm lights returned to the plaza. Isabelle opened her eyes in surprise. “It’s working.” Daniel smiled. “I told you.” But suddenly the sky above them cracked open with a bright flash of light. The calm atmosphere shattered again. A sharp sound echoed across the square, like electricity tearing through the air. Daniel looked up. “That’s not us.” A glowing shape began forming above the plaza. Isabelle felt her heart race. “No… that’s Camille.” --- At the same moment, inside her laboratory in Paris, Camille stared intensely at the monitors. The brainwave signals had finally aligned. Three patterns now pulsed across the screen. Daniel. Isabelle. And Camille. She adjusted the headset connected to the dream-link system. “For years, I studied this possibility,” she whispered. “Now I get to see it myself.” She pressed one final key. And the machine activated. --- Back in the dream, the light above the square grew brighter. Then suddenly— A figure appeared. Camille stood in the center of the plaza. She looked around with amazement. “Incredible,” she said softly. Her voice echoed clearly across the dream world. “This place… it’s actually real.” Daniel stepped forward angrily. “You shouldn’t be here.” Camille looked at him calmly. “Oh, Daniel,” she said. “Without me, this place wouldn’t exist.” Isabelle crossed her arms. “That’s not true. We created it.” Camille smiled slightly. “You created the emotions that power it. I created the doorway.” She walked slowly across the square, observing everything with fascination. “The architecture… the atmosphere… your minds built this entire environment.” She looked up at the sky. “And it’s far more stable than I predicted.” Daniel’s voice became serious. “You need to disconnect from the system.” Camille shook her head. “Not yet.” She looked directly at Isabelle. “Do you realize what this means?” Isabelle frowned. “What?” Camille’s eyes shone with excitement. “This dream world could become a place where human minds interact directly. No distance. No limits.” Daniel interrupted. “You’re treating people like test subjects.” Camille replied calmly. “That’s how discoveries are made.” Suddenly the air around them shifted again. A dark ripple moved across the sky. Isabelle noticed it first. “Daniel… look.” The shadow from earlier was returning. The mysterious third presence was forming again near the edge of the plaza. But this time it looked different. Stronger. More solid. Camille frowned as she noticed it too. “That shouldn’t be happening,” she said. Daniel looked toward the shadow. “I think the dream doesn’t like uninvited guests.” The mysterious man stepped forward once again. His expression was serious. “This dream is not yours to control,” he told Camille. Camille studied him carefully. “And you must be the defense mechanism,” she said. The man didn’t respond. But the air around him began to darken. Isabelle suddenly realized something. The dream world was reacting to conflict. And if things got worse… The entire connection could collapse. She stepped between them. “Stop,” she said. All three of them looked at her. “This dream exists because of Daniel and me,” Isabelle continued. “So if anyone decides what happens here…” Her voice became firm. “It’s us.” For a moment, the square was silent again. Camille slowly smiled. “Interesting.” But deep down, she knew something had changed. The dream world was no longer just an experiment. It was becoming something alive. And controlling it might not be as easy as she thought. Outside, the night lights of Paris shimmered peacefully, unaware that three minds were now connected inside a dream that was growing more powerful by the minute.
