Chapter 24: The Memory Hidden in the Dream

889 Words
The dream world had become strangely quiet. The square near Notre-Dame Cathedral was calm again, but the tension in the air had not disappeared. The lanterns Daniel had created floated gently above the river, casting soft golden reflections on the water. But now three people stood inside the dream. Daniel. Isabelle. And Camille. And somewhere within the shadows, the mysterious guardian still watched. Camille walked slowly across the plaza, observing everything like a scientist studying a rare discovery. “Incredible,” she whispered again. She looked up at the sky of the dream world. “The stability is improving every second.” Daniel frowned. “That’s because Isabelle and I are keeping it together.” Camille glanced at them. “Yes… but that’s exactly what fascinates me.” She gestured toward the buildings around them. “This environment is built from both of your memories and emotions. That’s why it feels so real.” Isabelle looked around the square. “So everything here comes from our minds?” “Exactly,” Camille replied. Isabelle thought about that. If the dream was made from their memories… Then something suddenly occurred to her. “What if there are parts of the dream we haven’t discovered yet?” Daniel looked curious. “What do you mean?” Isabelle pointed toward one of the narrow streets leading away from the plaza. “We’ve only been standing here.” She took a few steps toward the dark street. “But this dream might be much bigger than we think.” Daniel followed her. “You’re probably right.” Camille watched them carefully. Her scientific curiosity was growing stronger. “If this dream truly reflects your combined memories,” she said, “then exploring it could reveal things even you don’t know.” Isabelle stopped walking and looked back at her. “You mean hidden memories?” Camille nodded. “Or subconscious emotions.” Daniel crossed his arms. “That sounds slightly dangerous.” Camille smiled. “Discovery usually is.” Despite his concerns, Daniel followed Isabelle down the quiet street. The buildings looked older here. The warm lights from the square faded behind them as they walked deeper into the dream city. Eventually they reached a small bridge crossing the river. From there they could see the distant silhouette of the Eiffel Tower glowing softly in the night sky. Isabelle leaned on the railing of the bridge. “This place feels familiar,” she said quietly. Daniel stood beside her. “I was thinking the same thing.” Camille approached slowly. “That’s because the dream is combining memories from both of you.” She looked around carefully. “This part of the environment is very detailed. That usually means it’s connected to an important memory.” Isabelle closed her eyes for a moment, trying to remember. Then suddenly— The dream changed. The quiet bridge faded. The buildings shifted. The lanterns disappeared. When Isabelle opened her eyes again, everything looked different. The night had turned into daytime. And the dream had transformed into a bright park filled with green trees and sunlight. Daniel looked around in shock. “What just happened?” Camille stared in fascination. “A memory just activated.” Isabelle slowly looked across the park. Children were laughing nearby. People walked along the pathways. And sitting on a bench beneath a tree… Was a younger version of Isabelle. Daniel blinked. “Wait… is that you?” Isabelle nodded slowly. “Yes.” Her voice was soft. “I remember this.” Camille watched carefully. “This must be one of your childhood memories.” The younger Isabelle sat on the bench reading a book while sunlight filtered through the leaves above her. But after a moment, someone else walked into the scene. A young boy. Daniel stared in surprise. “Who’s that?” Isabelle squinted slightly as she looked at the boy. Her heart skipped. “I… don’t know.” But something about him felt strangely familiar. The boy sat beside the younger Isabelle on the bench. They talked and laughed like old friends. Daniel looked confused. “You really don’t remember him?” Isabelle shook her head slowly. “No… but I feel like I should.” Camille leaned closer to the scene. Her eyes widened slightly. “This is fascinating,” she whispered. “Your subconscious created a memory you don’t consciously remember.” Daniel looked uneasy. “You mean she forgot someone important?” Camille nodded. “Possibly.” Just then, the mysterious guardian appeared again at the edge of the park. His expression was more serious than before. “This memory was hidden for a reason,” he said. Isabelle turned toward him. “What reason?” The guardian looked directly at her. “Because it connects the two of you.” Daniel frowned. “What are you talking about?” The guardian slowly pointed toward the young boy in the memory. Isabelle looked back at the scene. The boy had turned slightly. For the first time, she could see his face clearly. Her eyes widened in shock. Because the boy looked exactly like a younger version of Daniel. The dream had just revealed something neither of them remembered. They had met once before. Long before the dreams ever began. And somehow… They had both forgotten.
