Chapter 12: Under the Sparkling Lights

748 Words
That evening, Amélie could barely concentrate on anything. All day she had been thinking about Julien’s words. “I’ll tell you tonight.” Those four words repeated again and again in her mind as she prepared to leave the bookstore near Notre-Dame Cathedral. What would he say? Would he tell her he was leaving for Montreal in Canada? Or would he choose to stay in Paris? The uncertainty made her heart beat faster. After closing the shop, Amélie walked toward the Seine River. The evening air was cool, and the streets of Paris glowed softly with lights from cafés and restaurants. When she reached the riverbank, she immediately saw him. Julien stood near the water, looking out across the river. Behind him, the beautiful Eiffel Tower rose into the dark sky, glowing softly. For a moment, Amélie simply watched him. This was the place where everything had started. The place from their dreams. The place where they had first realized their strange connection. Julien turned as he heard her footsteps. His face brightened when he saw her. “Amélie.” She smiled nervously. “Hi.” They stood facing each other for a moment, the quiet sound of the river flowing beside them. Finally, Julien spoke. “I’m glad you came.” “I wouldn’t miss this,” she said softly. Julien took a small breath and looked up briefly at the shining lights of the Eiffel Tower. Then he looked back at her. “I’ve been thinking a lot these past few days,” he said. “So have I,” Amélie replied. Julien nodded slowly. “The job in Montreal is a great opportunity,” he continued. “Anyone would be lucky to have it.” Amélie listened quietly, trying to prepare herself for whatever he was about to say. “But,” Julien added gently, “some opportunities come only once in life.” Amélie felt her heart sink slightly. “Yes,” she said softly. Julien stepped a little closer. “And sometimes,” he continued, “those opportunities are not jobs.” Amélie looked up at him, confused. “What do you mean?” Julien smiled warmly. “I mean meeting someone who changes everything.” Her heart began beating faster again. “When I first had those dreams, I thought they were just strange coincidences,” he said. “But now I think they were something more.” Amélie’s voice was quiet. “Something more?” Julien nodded. “I think they were guiding me.” “Guiding you where?” she asked. Julien gently took her hands in his. “To you.” Amélie’s breath caught slightly. The lights of the Eiffel Tower suddenly began to sparkle brilliantly behind them, lighting the night sky. Julien smiled. “I guess the tower agrees with me.” Amélie laughed softly, though her eyes were shining with emotion. “So… what did you decide?” she asked carefully. Julien looked at her for a long moment before answering. “I turned down the job.” Amélie’s eyes widened. “You did?” Julien nodded. “Yes.” “But why?” she asked, surprised. Julien’s voice was calm and sincere. “Because some dreams are more important than others.” He paused before continuing. “For years, my dream was to build a new life somewhere else. But then I started dreaming about a girl standing by the river.” Amélie felt tears forming in her eyes. “And when I finally met her,” he continued, “I realized something.” “What?” she whispered. “That she might be the dream I was really searching for.” The words filled the quiet night air. Amélie’s heart felt warm and full. “You stayed… because of me?” she asked. Julien smiled softly. “I stayed because of us.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. The sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower reflected on the calm water beside them. Finally, Amélie stepped a little closer. “I’m really glad you stayed,” she said quietly. Julien looked into her eyes. “So am I.” Then, in that peaceful moment by the river in Paris, something beautiful happened. Julien gently pulled her into a warm embrace. And under the sparkling lights of the tower, where their dreams had first begun, their story truly started. Not as a dream anymore. But as something real. Something hopeful. Something that might last forever.
