Chapter 11: A Choice of the Heart

720 Words
After their perfect day together, Amélie returned home with mixed emotions. Part of her felt incredibly happy. The day she had spent with Julien exploring the beautiful streets of Paris had been one of the best days of her life. But another part of her felt worried. Julien still had a decision to make. As she stood by her window that night, she looked toward the distant lights of the Eiffel Tower. The tower sparkled softly against the dark sky, just as it had the night they first walked together by the river. “Please make the right choice,” she whispered quietly. But she knew the choice had to be Julien’s. --- Over the next few days, life returned to its normal rhythm. Amélie continued working at the bookstore near Notre-Dame Cathedral, helping customers and arranging shelves filled with stories of love, adventure, and dreams. Julien still visited the shop often. But something about him felt different. He smiled and joked like usual, yet Amélie could tell he was thinking deeply about his future. Sometimes she caught him staring out the window at the busy streets of Paris as if he were trying to imagine leaving it behind. One afternoon, while they were sitting in the reading corner of the bookstore, Amélie finally asked the question that had been on her mind. “Have you made your decision yet?” Julien looked at her calmly. “Not yet,” he admitted. Amélie nodded slowly. “It’s a big decision.” Julien sighed. “The job in Montreal is something I’ve wanted for a long time,” he said. “It’s a chance to grow, to build something new.” Amélie listened quietly. “But leaving Paris… and leaving you…” he continued softly. His voice faded. Amélie felt her heart tighten. She didn’t want to influence his choice unfairly. “You shouldn’t stay here just because of me,” she said gently. Julien looked at her with a thoughtful expression. “Do you really believe that?” Amélie hesitated. She had spent days trying to ignore the truth growing in her heart. But now, looking into Julien’s eyes, she realized she could no longer pretend. “Yes,” she said softly. “But that doesn’t mean it won’t hurt.” Julien was quiet for a moment. Then he spoke again. “Amélie… can I ask you something honestly?” She nodded. “Of course.” Julien leaned slightly closer. “If I leave… will you forget about me?” Amélie’s eyes widened. “Forget you?” she repeated. Julien shrugged lightly. “People move on. Life continues.” Amélie shook her head immediately. “I could never forget you.” Julien studied her face carefully. “Why not?” Amélie took a deep breath. Because the truth was finally clear to her. “You’re not just someone I met,” she said quietly. “You’re the man who appeared in my dreams before I even knew your name.” Julien’s expression softened. “And now?” he asked. Amélie’s voice was barely above a whisper. “Now you’re someone very important to me.” For a moment, the world outside the bookstore seemed to fade away. The busy streets of Paris continued as usual, but inside the small shop, time felt still. Julien gently took her hand. “Amélie,” he said softly. “Yes?” “I think I needed to hear that.” She looked at him nervously. “Why?” Julien smiled. “Because I think I finally know what my heart wants.” Amélie felt her breath catch slightly. But before he could say more, the bell above the bookstore door rang loudly as a group of customers walked in. The moment was interrupted. Julien stood up slowly. “I’ll tell you tonight,” he said with a mysterious smile. “Tonight?” Amélie asked. “Yes.” “Where?” Julien looked toward the window, where the distant outline of the Eiffel Tower could be seen between the buildings. “By the river,” he said. “The same place where our dreams began.” Amélie watched him leave the bookstore, her heart beating faster with anticipation. Tonight, Julien would make his decision. And whatever he chose would change both of their lives forever.
