Chapter 10: One Perfect Day

762 Words
After Julien told Amélie about the job in Montreal, everything felt different. The quiet bookstore near Notre-Dame Cathedral no longer felt as peaceful as it usually did. The happy feeling Amélie had carried since their night at the café had been replaced by uncertainty. Two weeks. That was all the time they had before Julien might leave Paris. Neither of them spoke for a moment. The silence between them felt heavy with thoughts and emotions. Finally, Julien stood up slowly. “Amélie,” he said softly, “I don’t want the time we have left to feel sad.” She looked up at him. “What do you mean?” Julien gave a small smile. “If I’m going to make a decision about my future, I want to spend some time with you first,” he said. Amélie’s heart softened. “And how do you want to spend that time?” she asked. Julien’s eyes brightened slightly. “Let’s spend one full day together in Paris,” he suggested. “No worries about tomorrow. Just enjoy the city.” Amélie thought about it for a moment. The idea felt simple, but also very special. “I’d like that,” she said. --- The next morning, the sky over Paris was bright and clear. Amélie met Julien near the Seine River. The sunlight reflected beautifully on the calm water, and the city looked peaceful and welcoming. “Ready for our adventure?” Julien asked with a playful smile. Amélie laughed. “Where are we going first?” Julien pointed down the street. “Breakfast.” They walked to a small bakery where the smell of fresh croissants filled the air. Sitting outside with coffee and warm pastries, they watched the busy street come alive. For the first time since Julien shared his news, Amélie felt relaxed again. After breakfast, they walked along the river, talking and laughing like old friends. They visited small art shops, watched street musicians perform, and even stopped to look at paintings from local artists. At one point, Julien bought a small sketch from a street artist. “What’s that for?” Amélie asked. Julien handed it to her. It was a simple drawing of the Eiffel Tower beside the Seine River. “So you’ll always remember today,” he said. Amélie smiled warmly. “I don’t think I could forget this day even if I tried.” --- As the afternoon turned into evening, they found themselves walking through the beautiful gardens near the Louvre Museum. The golden sunset painted the sky with soft colors, making the city look even more magical. Amélie sat on a bench and watched the sky change slowly. “I love this city,” she said quietly. Julien sat beside her. “So do I.” She turned to him. “Will you really leave it?” Julien looked thoughtful. “I don’t know yet,” he admitted. For a moment, they both watched the sunset in silence. Later that night, they walked back toward the river. The lights of the Eiffel Tower sparkled brightly, just as they had during their first night together. They stopped at the same place by the water where their dreams had once brought them. Amélie leaned slightly against the stone wall, looking at the reflection of the tower in the river. “This place feels special now,” she said. Julien nodded. “It’s where everything started.” After a moment, he gently took her hand again. “Amélie,” he said softly. “Yes?” Julien looked at her seriously. “Meeting you has changed something in me.” Her heart began to beat faster. “I thought my future was already planned,” he continued. “But now I’m not so sure.” Amélie looked down at their hands. “You have an amazing opportunity,” she said quietly. “You shouldn’t lose that because of me.” Julien shook his head. “You’re not just a reason to stay,” he said. “Then what am I?” she asked. Julien smiled gently. “You might be the reason my dreams brought me here in the first place.” The city lights reflected softly on the water as they stood together beside the river in Paris. Neither of them knew what the future would bring. But one thing had become clear. Their connection was real. And now Julien had a choice to make—follow the path he had planned for years, or follow the unexpected path that had begun with a dream.
