8. Fates
Nathaniel’s POV
We sat in silence for some time. Gabriella curled up in my lap, Danny hugging Cary.
“I cannot give up Gabriella.” I broke the silence
“We can’t put so many lives in danger, Nate. Do you think we can ever find happiness with that kind of guilt?” Gabriella said quietly
“We don’t even know if what he said was true” Danny offered.
“What reason would he have to lie to us, though? Are you willing to risk it?” Gabriella asked, still buried in my neck
“Are you suggesting that we reject each other?” I asked angrily
“Nate, I don’t want to reject you” she lifted her head and looked deep into my eyes. “You are my life, Nate. I am sure I will not survive the rejection. And I am not willing to let you go. I am just saying we need to find another way to avoid the demise.”
“The elder said the pack needs an Alpha blooded male and an Alpha or Beta female. Are we sure that Ella is an Omega? We don’t know anything about her parents.” Cary suggested hopefully.
“Every orphan’s blood is tested for their lineage. We are all raised as omegas but when we are released we receive our blood results so it could help us find the best way to contribute to the pack. My blood is a mixture between a high rank warrior and an omega. Still not strong enough for a Luna.” Gabriella explained.
“But omegas can climb up the hierarchy, right? Doesn’t that change their blood strength?” Danny asked
“It does but in order for that to happen you need special training from the elders which is about a year, sometimes two. And then you need to go through a special ritual and Selene’s blessing. Selene is missing and the elders are gone and we also don’t have a year. The pack needs a luna now to survive.” Danny explained.
“Then Daniel can be the alpha - he is my brother and is of alpha blood. He hasn’t found his fated mate yet and can take a chosen one of strong blood. I believe Cary would be a good Luna. I will not be without Gabriella.” I suggested. I don’t want to be an alpha without Gabriella by my side. Daniel’s face fell, his eyes trained to the floor.
“Brother, you will be a great alpha. I know it. You know everything I know and the pack respects you as much as me. We will be with you and help you” I encouraged him
“It is not that, Nate. I can’t be an alpha, because I don’t have an alpha blood. We are brothers, Nate, but not by blood” he said looking in my eyes. The girls gasped.
“I don’t understand…” I said, feeling confused
“When I was 14, a little after Gabriella came, dad told me I was adopted. He found me in the woods on one of his missions. He brought me home and intended to send me to the orphanage but mom didn’t let him and they adopted me. I had a tag with my name and birthdate tied on my leg and that’s all. He told me only because he didn’t want me to find out somehow and feel betrayed.” Daniel said
“Why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t dad tell me?” I asked
“I asked dad not to. Honestly, I have always felt you all as my family. I never felt out of place and felt like I belonged. So that information didn’t change the way I felt about you, dad or mom. But I guess I was a bit worried that you might not feel the same if you knew the truth.” Daniel replied
“You know me better than that, brother. But I understand where you are coming from.” I stood up and pulled him a brotherly hug.
I sat back down on the armchair with Gabriella in my lap. She snuggled in me and buried her nose in my neck.
“I don’t want to lose you, Nate” she whispered and I felt her silent tears wet my neck. Cary was crying too, snuggled in Daniel’s arms. Mine and my brother’s eyes filled with tears, too.
“None of us will be the same if you two get separated” Daniel said quietly.
I was running circles on Gabriella’s back, kissing her hair. I looked at Danny and Cary, their eyes were drooping, Gabriella was dozing off as well and I felt my eyelids heavy. I don’t know how but I felt darkness embrace me, unable to fight the sleep off.
I felt my bare feet walking in the darkness, I have no idea where to but I felt pulled to where I was going. The darkness began to fade and I saw a beautiful meadow with a lake in the far distance. I walked towards the lake and saw Gabriella, Cary and Danny sitting on a bench. I got closer and sat next to Gabriella, sneaking my arms around her bringing her closer to me. I noticed four wolves lying on our feet. I recognized Atlas and Calypso curled up next to each other, whimpering softly and crying silently. Next to them were Roden and Tsunami - Danny’s and Cary’s wolves. They were in the same state as Atlas and Caly.
“What is going on? Where are we?” I asked
“We don’t know. Maybe dead?” Gabriella shrugged
“You are not dead, Selene’s children. You are in Ethereum - our home.” We heard three voices speaking as one.
We looked forward and saw three women standing in front of us. They looked exactly the same except the color of their hair. The first one had light pink hair, the second - purple and the third - blue. All three of them were wearing long robes with hoods over their heads, long curly hair framing their faces and hanging loosely down to their waist. They looked magical and the softness in their gazes almost hypnotized us.
They got closer to us.
“We are the fates. We brought you here to talk to you about Selene and your possible futures.” they said in unison
“A few human years ago Selene saw something dark in the future - the end of the magical beings on Earth. Selene’s gift of premonition is very advanced and she could see all the possible outcomes and what actions would trigger the butterfly effect that would lead to the best version of the future. This vision was different. A lot of it was blurry and unclear, she couldn’t see who was behind this and why. All possible futures led to the same demise, except one. We pulled the string of fate and did what must be done but something happened and Selene disappeared. The last thing she told us was that someone tempered the strings of fate and changed the butterfly effect.
We know this is a lot for you, but Selene is taken and we don’t know who took her and why. We are worried, her absence will cause chaos and will eventually end the shifters’ existence.
Until we find Selene, we will take care of her children, but we need your help, too. We saw only one future that doesn't end your world and that is the one where Gabriella and Nathaniel are separate.” they said and tears filled their eyes.
Why was this happening to us? What did we do to deserve this? How were we supposed to live without each other? I felt so lost and desperate. Gabriella was sobbing against my shoulder, tears falling freely down my cheeks. Cary was a sobbing mess as well and Dany was crying too.
“Why is this happening to us? Why does it have to us? Why were we matched as mates nly to rip our hearts out?” I voiced my thoughts?
“We don’t know. Your relationship was supposed to lead to your victory. You four as a team were supposed to prevent the dark future. We don’t know who messed with our deeds as we are the only ones who can control the strings of fate. This is not against you, this is way more dangerous - someone wants to end the world as we all know it and if the balance is disturbed, the universe will end.
Our premonition gift is different from Selene’s - we only get pieces and clues. Since Selene’s gone, the only clear vision that we have had is that Gabriella is the one who can find and rescue Selene.”
“How are you even sure that what you’re saying is true? If there is someone messing with the strings of fate what would stop them from doing it again” I ask irritatedly.
“We created new protection on the string. No one will be able to temper with it anymore,” they answered patiently.
“We would never survive rejection,” Gabriella said sobbing.
“We have a few ways to help you with that. We can remove the mark and the bond, but that won’t erase the love you have for each other as it goes deeper than the bond. We can also alter your memories so you can forget about your relationship and alter it to friendship instead.”
“NO” I growled and Gabriella just sobbed harder in the nape of my neck.
“You have one day to make a decision. We will summon you in 24 hours. There will be four elder witches to create a prophecy if you decide to help us find Selene and save the world. That will ensure that no one will interfere anymore.” they said softly and soon the surroundings started to fade away and we were back in the office.
