A Door I Never Chose
The car slowed as it approached the gates, and Ariana kept her eyes fixed ahead. The iron bars were already open, wide enough to let them in without question. That alone felt strange. She had expected something more—security, hesitation, anything that would make this feel real. Instead, there was nothing but silence. They drove in. The driveway stretched longer than she expected, bordered by trimmed hedges and soft lights that had already come on as evening settled in. At the end stood the house—large, carefully designed, and distant in a way that made it hard to connect to. “This is it,” her mother said quietly. Ariana nodded once, but didn’t respond. The car stopped in front of the entrance. Before she could open the door, it was already being pulled open from the outside. A man stood there, composed, like he had been waiting. Richard Cole. He greeted her mother first, pulling her into a brief embrace, then turned to Ariana with a calm expression. “So you’re Ariana.” “Yes.” His gaze lingered for a moment, not uncomfortable, just observant. “You’ll get used to things here.” She wasn’t sure about that, but she didn’t argue. “Maybe.” He stepped aside, letting them walk in. Inside, everything was exactly what she expected—expensive, polished, and carefully arranged. Nothing looked out of place. Nothing looked used either. It felt less like a home and more like something maintained. They moved through the space without stopping, their footsteps light against the smooth floor. “Your rooms are upstairs,” Richard said, already heading toward the staircase. Ariana followed, her attention shifting from one detail to another, not out of admiration, but out of habit. She noticed things easily—the quiet, the structure, the way everything seemed controlled. They reached the top. That was when she saw him. He was standing down the hallway, leaning slightly against the wall as if he had been there for a while. He didn’t move when they appeared, didn’t adjust, didn’t pretend. He just looked at her. Ethan Cole. There was nothing welcoming in his expression. No curiosity either. Just a steady, unreadable gaze that felt more like judgment than interest. “This is my son, Ethan,” Richard said. Ariana gave a small nod. “Hi.” Ethan didn’t return it. His eyes stayed on her a second longer before he finally spoke. “You’re staying here?” His tone wasn’t surprised. Just flat. “Yes.” A short pause followed. Not awkward—just enough to make it clear that nothing more needed to be said. “Alright,” he said. That was it. No effort to make her comfortable. No attempt to hide what he thought. Richard didn’t react to the tension. If he noticed it, he ignored it. “Your room is this way,” he said, continuing down the hallway. Ariana followed again, but she was aware of it now—the shift in the air, the presence behind her. She didn’t turn back. ⸻ Her room was larger than she expected. The bed, the windows, the space—it all felt excessive. Clean and quiet, like no one had really lived in it before. “Take your time settling in,” her mother said. “Dinner will be ready later.” “Okay.” Her mother smiled, then left, closing the door gently behind her. Ariana stood there for a moment before walking further into the room. She placed her bag on the chair, then moved toward the window. The view overlooked the garden, every part of it arranged with the same precision as everything else. Nothing felt random here. Nothing felt natural either. She exhaled slowly and turned away. A knock came at the door. Not loud. Just enough. “Come in.” The door opened without hesitation. Ethan stepped inside. He didn’t look around the room this time. His attention stayed on her. Ariana leaned slightly against the edge of the desk. “Did you need something?” “Yes.” He closed the door behind him, then stopped a few steps in. “You should understand how things work here.” She waited. “This house runs a certain way. People don’t just do whatever they want.” “That sounds normal.” “It is,” he said. “As long as it stays that way.” There was something in his tone now—not raised, not aggressive, just controlled in a way that suggested he meant exactly what he was saying. Ariana watched him for a moment. “And you’re telling me this because…?” “Because you’re new,” he said. “And I don’t like adjustments.” She almost smiled at that. “Then you’re going to have a problem.” His expression didn’t change, but there was a slight pause before he responded. “I don’t think so.” She straightened a little. “You don’t know me.” “I don’t need to.” That was enough to shift the mood. Ariana’s gaze held his. “You’ve already decided, then.” “Yes.” Simple. Direct. She nodded once, more to herself than to him. “That makes things easier.” “For who?” “For me.” Another pause. This one slightly longer. Ethan took a step closer, not enough to crowd her, but enough to change the distance between them. “Stay out of things that don’t concern you,” he said. Ariana didn’t move. “And what exactly concerns me?” “You’ll figure that out.” She shook her head slightly. “That’s vague.” “It’s not.” They stood there for a second, neither of them backing down, neither raising their voice. Then Ethan stepped back. “Just don’t create problems,” he said. Ariana folded her arms. “I wasn’t planning to.” “Good.” He turned and walked to the door, opening it without hesitation. Then he stopped briefly. “People don’t last long here when they try too hard.” He left without waiting for a response. ⸻ The room was quiet again. Ariana stayed where she was for a moment before walking back to the window. The garden looked the same as before—calm, controlled, untouched. Nothing had changed. But something had. She could feel it. Not in the house. In the way things had already started. And it was clear enough— This wasn’t going to be simple.
