chapter 1: The dream
The event was flocked with villagers. Everyone was dancing, rejoicing, and eating. Beautiful Music playing all over the atmosphere. We were marching into the center of the occasion accompanied by a lot of family and friends who were dancing and rejoicing with us. Othniel my cousin was the one in charge of music. He was told the best choice of songs to play. He was playing my favorite songs but I wasn't dancing. Something was going on, that I couldn't understand. Maybe the rest of the people were not seeing what was going on. "Why is the bride not dancing?" People kept asking. That was a question that I also don't have an answer to. "Dance my dear dance, release yourself, and dance my baby, it's your day and it's once in a lifetime probably". My aunt whispered to my ears softly. I was still not dancing, I was just looking at my dad where he was seated among other village elders. The only thing going through my mind was the dream I had some night before the wedding. "Two men came and a woman came into my room that night, the men sat beside my bed, with each of them putting his hands to hold over my leg. The lady they came with stood across the other side of my room, she was wearing a garment that was woven with the traditional colors of our people. She held a golden staff in one hand and the other hand a garment that looked exactly like the one she was wearing. She handed out the garment to me and said "Welcome to the realm of the ancestors, your journey may not be a familiar one to you, but your safety is guaranteed" When she said that, I saw myself walking down an unfamiliar path with them. In the few minutes of walking on that path, I saw a lot of unfamiliar things, that I'm going to tell you about as the story continues. I woke up from the dream and I saw a fabric on my bed which looked exactly like the garment I saw in the dream. I was shocked and short of words. I was sweating profusely And my breath was struggling to correspond with the speedy rhythm of my heart that was palpitating. "Was that a dream, or reality? No, it's a dream, but no it's not, if it were just a dream, why am I seeing the same fabric as the one I saw in the dream? No! No! No! This is not an ordinary dream, there must be a meaning to this." I said as I ran into my parent's apartment to relate to them exactly what I saw in the dream and show them proof that it was not an ordinary dream by presenting to them the fabric that appeared on my bed. When I walked into my parent's room, I told them what happened and some of the things I saw. We all ran to my room to see the fabric that was on my bead but when we got there, it wasn't there. My dad turned to my Mum and whispered to her by saying "She is the chosen one. This year is the forty-seventh year since the last Coronation which makes it the year to choose the next queen for the 'Tamar'kumeh' reunion." On hearing that, my Mum guarded her rapper, shook her head, and walked out of the room. Like she wasn't expecting such news. "What are you saying Baba, that thing you said, what does it mean?" I curiously asked. "Things will get clearer with time my dear, but for now, you need to calm down Limah. because these are things that we do not have any answers to and we do not have the power to question why. for they've been the tradition of our people, passed down from one generation to the next by the power of our ancestors." "But Baba, why did you say I'm the chosen one? I do not understand what you meant by 'chosen' I'm the chosen one for what Baba?" I requested looking up to my daddy for an answer. But my daddy seems not to want to be the one to disclose. My dad went silent, put his right hand on my shoulder, and looked at me for a while like he was admiring me or like he had a deep secret to tell me, but he didn't say anything, he stood looking at me, then took his hand off my shoulder. "Go to sleep Limah, everything will be alright." He said as he walked away. I followed him to the door still hoping to get an answer, but it was obvious that I was caught up in a mystery. I went back to my bed that night with questions on my mind, wondering what the meaning of the dream might be... On this day, which was supposed to be my traditional wedding, sweet music was taken advantage of, everybody was dancing and I was expected to dance down the aisle. And the funniest part of the story was, I was the only one the people were referring to as the bride and groom because I was yet to see my husband.
