I Want To File For Divorce

925 Words
After my family disappeared into the crowd, I turned my back and started to go home. I kept a straight face as I thought about what I was going to do next. I was free. Not just free for some days, I was free for the rest of my life. I returned home and started to get ready to hit the mall. I had some savings from selling fruits I grew at the back of the house. I had saved quite some thousands, and since I didn’t have a life, my money remained intact. Unspent. I went to the mall and bought a nice black gown. I would have bought a red gown, but I was going to be speaking formally. I thought not to look so loud in red while talking to a crowd of mature and serious minds. The Science Adaptation Council was no small feat. I picked up and purchased Hermes designer heels and a lovely bag to match. Next, I went for a makeover. I made my hair into a gorgeous bun that would become more beautiful on the day of the event. I waxed my skin and did every single beauty procedure one can think of. My toenails, which looked hideous, now looked neat and beautiful. I was ready. To celebrate my newfound freedom, I smacked red lipstick on my lips, put on one of the new gowns I bought for myself, got into Gilbert’s car, and hit the road. I was going to the club. I was going to celebrate my freedom. I let the music and wine take control of me at the club. I made sure to have a good time before I returned home to an empty house. Feeling brand new, I sat on the computer and started to research. Gilbert always stopped me from doing anything on the computer. He would say; ‘’I’m hungry, Christy, and you are playing on the internet.’’ Playing? Gilbert ridiculed my existence until I looked nothing like a scientist who had invented anything. I looked like a desperate, frustrated and miserable housewife. But now, I had the time to visit my archives. My memory started to refresh. My brain started to tick again, so I called someone. ‘’I’m returning to the lab.’’ When I said those words, I felt the energy from the other end of the phone, spike. ‘’Christy! Christabel Quadri, are you sure? I will suspend other projects so that we can start something.’’ Thomas Sync, my partner in innovation and the co-creator of the Polymath machine said to me. When I agreed to give the ownership of the Polymath machine to Gilbert, Thomas also lost his identity and shares as the co-creator of the machine. So now I have announced my return, he looked forward to it a lot. ‘’I’m done playing small. I am coming back for everything that was taken from me.’’ That was what I told Thomas before I hung up. I woke up the following morning and checked my phone. I saw Graham’s post on social media. Himself, Lucy, Joseph, Gilbert and Alice. They all looked like one big family. Without me. Obviously, Alice had taken my place even in my son’s life. They had arrived on the first day of Mayfair, and their excitement bustled through the picture. I felt so betrayed as I looked at the picture. There was no way to put it apart from the fact that I didn’t deserve any of that. Memories hit me as I looked at the people I had bent over for, tearing my heart to shreds without a care in the world. Gilbert, whom I had given the ownership of one of the most priced inventions in the world, treated me like a heap of dirt. My sister, Alice, loved to see me on the ground as inferior to her. She took my husband from me coldly. My son. Maybe my son’s betrayal hurt the most because I gave birth to him. I nurtured him before and after he came into this world. Only for him to accept another woman as a mother figure. I saw the way he captioned the picture he posted. ‘’One big unbreakable family. Just us.’’ He leaned into Alice fondly with a big smile on his face. Then there was Lucy. I sent Lucy some money in school just a week ago. Graham had asked me to please do so, and I did. But what did I get in return? Betrayal. Lucy treated me like every other person in the house. Like garbage. Like an option. Then there was Joseph, my grandson. My heart ached at the thought of Joseph, and I almost burst into tears. When Joseph was born, I cleaned him, bathed him, and played with him. It was a horrible and heart-wrenching feeling to watch Joseph’s attitude towards me gradually change for the worse. Eventually, he became an uncontrollable nuisance to me that I had to shut out of my mind. Joseph cursed my existence the most. All of them smiled back at me in the picture that Graham posted. Their broad smiles carried their happiness and carried my mockery. ‘We traveled to Mayfair without you. What will you do about it?’ That was the impression their expressions in the photo carried. They taunted me. I navigated to my contacts and blocked all their numbers. Gilbert, Alice, Graham and Lucy. After I did that, I made a phone call. ‘’Hello attorney, I would love to file for divorce.’’
