Chapter 1
Bill Gallow sat at a corner table in the dimly lit nightclub, his thoughts clouded with the looming threat of the mafia gang after him.
He took a sip from the drink in his hands, trying to drown out the fear and anxiety that threatened to overwhelm him.
As he watched the colourful lights dance across the faces of the club-goers, a sense of loneliness washed over him.
His mother, who had once been his confidante and partner in crime, was no longer by his side. The realization hit him hard, leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.
Lost in his thoughts, Bill's gaze wandered to the dance floor, where a group of girls moved with grace and freedom.
One of them caught his eye - a young woman with flowing brunette hair and a captivating smile. For a moment, the sight offered him a temporary escape from his troubles, a flicker of hope in the darkness that surrounded him.
But his brief moment of respite was shattered by the insistent ringing of his phone. With a heavy heart, he answered the call, knowing all too well who it would be.
"Hello, Bill," Arturo's voice was cold and threatening. "Give me the papers, or you die tonight."
Bill's mind raced as he weighed his options. He knew that Arturo and the mafia would stop at nothing to get what they wanted. Desperation clawed at him as he tried to reason with his step-brother.
"Arturo, please. Let's talk about this. I can offer you a fair deal - a 50-50 split. We can come to an agreement that benefits both of us," Bill pleaded, hoping against hope that Arturo would see reason.
But Arturo's response was swift and merciless. "I don't negotiate, Bill. You've crossed a line, and now you have to face the consequences. You will die tonight."
The finality in Arturo's words sent a chill down Bill's spine. He knew that there was no turning back now, no way to avoid the inevitable showdown with his step-brother and the dangerous men he commanded.
As the call ended, Bill felt a surge of adrenaline coursing through his veins. He knew he had to think of a way out and act fast.
It was at that moment he spotted the same young woman he saw before his phone rang across the crowded club, her long, flowing hair and curves catching his eye immediately.
He knew he had to make his move now if he wanted his last night to be memorable. He made his way through the throngs of people and finally stood in front of her, a sly smile playing on his lips.
"Hey there, gorgeous. Mind if I join you for a drink?" Bill asked, his voice smooth and charming.
She looked up from her drink, her deep brown eyes meeting his with a hint of amusement. "Sure, why not? I could use some company tonight."
"I'm Bill"
"What's your name?"
Bill asked as he took a seat next to her, ordering a couple of drinks from the bartender.
"I am Maria," she said as they sipped on their cocktails, Bill couldn't help but admire Maria's beauty. Her laughter was like music to his ears, and he found himself drawn to her more and more with each passing minute.
"So, what brings you to a place like this tonight?" Bill asked, trying to keep the conversation light.
Maria shrugged, a small smile playing on her lips. "Just felt like letting loose, you know? Life's too short to not have a little fun once in a while."
Bill nodded in agreement, his mind wandering back to the dangerous situation he was in. But for now, he pushed those thoughts aside, wanting to focus on the stunning woman in front of him But he was overwhelmed by his thoughts so
Bill looked out into the crowd, his eyes betraying a sense of longing and regret.
Maria noticed the sadness in his gaze and gently touched his hand, silently urging him to share his thoughts.
"It's funny, you know," Bill began, his voice tinged with bitterness. "Growing up in a wealthy family, everyone always assumed I had everything I could ever want. But the truth is, I never truly had peace."
Maria listened intently, her eyes full of compassion and understanding. "What do you mean?" she asked softly.
Bill took a deep breath, his thoughts swirling around in his head. "My family may have had money and influence, but we were constantly surrounded by greed, power struggles, and a never-ending quest for more. It was exhausting, Maria. I never felt like I could just be myself, or find true happiness in the midst of all the chaos."
Maria nodded, her heart aching for the pain she could see etched on Bill's face. "It must have been incredibly difficult for you," she murmured.
Bill chuckled bitterly, taking another sip of his drink. "You have no idea. I always thought that wealth equalled happiness, but now I see how wrong I was. True peace and contentment can't be bought or traded for power."
"Power is always dangerous,” she said as she took a sip from her cup.
Bill stared directly into her eyes in curiosity and wanted to know why she said that.
Bill leaned forward and asked her silently
"Have you ever been in a position of power before?"
Maria sighed and responded silently. "Why have you been checking your watch every minute?"
Bill laughed, sat up and looked away into the crowd.
"I can make everything better if you let me,” she said as she stood and turned around for him to see clearly.
Bill laughed again as he gave her a complete look from the head to the toe and admired her beauty once again
As the night wore on, the two of them found themselves lost in conversation, sharing stories and laughter like old friends. Bill couldn't remember the last time he had felt this at ease with someone, and he knew that Maria was someone special.
As the club started to empty out and the lights began to dim, Bill knew that it was time to make his move. He leaned in closer to Maria, his heart pounding in his chest.
"Let's go home," Bill said.
They both stood and walked out from the club, got into the car and Bill lit his cigar with Maria leaning back in the passenger seat and Bill holding the steering hard.
The night breeze flowed through the open windows.
As they drove down the dimly lit streets, a sudden sense of unease settled over them. Maria's sharp eyes caught a glint of something in her sideview mirror.
Before she could react, a car screeched to a halt in front of them from the woods, before they could reverse another car halted behind them blocking their path. Arturo's men with masks and guns emerged from the vehicle, surrounding them.
Maria remained calm, her years of training as a detective kicking in as she quickly assessed the situation.
All hope was lost for Bill as he knew he was about to meet his end but Maria pushed his head down and asked him, “Are they after you?”
“That's why I want to have my last night with you.”
“It won't be your last night. They won't spare me too,” Maria answered. She reached for her weapon, a sleek Glock 19 silver colour concealed in her purse and stepped out of the car.
Using the door as a shield, she fired some shots and then slipped under the car. Suddenly, there was silence and Bill thought she was dead. He rested his head, expecting death and it came.
One of the thugs came near him and placed a gun on his head. “From Don Arturo, fare well.”
Bill heard the gunshot and he was shocked to be without a scratch. Then he found out that the shot wasn't his when he opened his eyes. Maria had gunned the thug down.
“Who are you?” Bill asked.
“A girl who won't die so simply. Who are you too?” she asked.
“A billionaire, from the Gallows household. One who death is after!”
"We need to get out of here now," she said, her eyes scanning the area for any signs of more danger. Bill nodded in silent agreement, his heart racing with adrenaline
"We can't go home Maria, this guy might be waiting for me at home.”
Maria cuts in, "There's a motel not far from here we can stay there for the night.
