Chapter 1: Arrival at Eclipse Academy
A single lantern flickered at the edge of the abandoned railway station. The night air smelled of damp earth and burning incense, a strange combination that unsettled Tonaki Hoshigaki as he stood among the small group of first-year students. None of them spoke. The air was too thick with tension, too heavy with the unshakable sense that they had stepped into something far bigger than themselves.
A deep hum resonated through the station as the air shimmered unnaturally. Then, as if emerging from the void itself, a train with no visible conductor pulled up to the platform. Its dark steel frame glowed with ancient runes, pulsating with a ghostly blue light. The doors slid open without a sound. No announcement. No instructions. Just an invitation to step into the unknown.
Tonaki hesitated. Was this really the right decision? He had no magical lineage, no impressive powers to call his own—just the Zero Mark, an empty symbol that should have meant he was powerless. Yet, the academy had invited him. Why?
A girl with silver hair, her form slightly translucent under the moonlight, glanced at him. "You should hurry up. The train doesn't wait."
Her voice sent a chill down his spine. Rika Tsukihime. The half-ghost girl. He had heard rumors about her, about how she could walk between the world of the living and the dead. If she was here, that meant this academy wasn't just a place for the gifted—it was a place for those who had no other choice but to be exceptional.
Taking a deep breath, Tonaki stepped onto the train. The doors sealed shut behind him, trapping them in a space that smelled faintly of old parchment and something metallic—blood?
The train lurched forward. Through the windows, the real world faded, dissolving into a swirling vortex of shadows and shifting stars. They were no longer anywhere ordinary.
Eclipse Academy stood at the center of a valley wreathed in perpetual twilight. Ancient spires loomed over them, their obsidian surfaces reflecting nothing but darkness. The air crackled with unseen energy, and the very ground seemed to breathe beneath their feet.
Torches lined the grand staircase leading up to the academy's gates. But instead of fire, they held ethereal blue flames, flickering without heat. Shadows moved unnaturally at the edges of their vision, vanishing when looked at directly.
Tonaki felt a knot form in his stomach. Something about this place felt alive—as if it were watching them.
"Impressive, isn't it?" A voice came from beside him.
He turned to see a boy with sharp red eyes and jet-black hair standing casually with his arms crossed.
"Lucien Dantalion," the boy said with a smirk. "Demon prince, exiled, and now your new classmate. Try to keep up, Zero Mark."
Tonaki stiffened. The name Dantalion carried weight. A royal demon family. And an exiled prince? Why was someone like him at this academy? Before he could respond, a deep, authoritative voice cut through the murmurs of the arriving students.
"Welcome, initiates."
A figure stepped forward from the top of the grand staircase. Dressed in robes that seemed to swallow the light around them, the Headmaster loomed above them like a specter. Though his face was hidden behind a featureless mask, his presence alone pressed down on them like an unbearable weight.
"You have been chosen. But be warned—Eclipse Academy is no ordinary school. Knowledge here is earned through blood, sweat, and sacrifice. And not all of you will leave."
A murmur ran through the students, but the Headmaster raised a single gloved hand. Silence fell instantly.
"Your trials begin at dawn. Until then... try to survive the night."
The great iron gates groaned open behind him, revealing a vast hall filled with towering shadows. A shiver ran down Tonaki's spine. Something was watching them from the darkness inside.
After a brief and tense introduction by a professor named Veylen, the students were led to their respective dormitories. The halls were grand, filled with relics and paintings that seemed to shift when not directly observed.
Tonaki's assigned room was surprisingly spacious but cold. His belongings had already been placed neatly beside his bed—though he had never seen anyone bring them in.
As he sat down, something slipped from beneath his pillow. A folded note, written in ink that seemed to flicker between gold and black:
"Do not trust anyone. Not even yourself. The school devours its own."
Tonaki's pulse quickened. He scanned the room, but nothing seemed out of place. Who had left this? And what did it mean by 'not even yourself'?
Before he could think further, the academy bell tolled midnight, resonating through the entire building. The walls trembled slightly, as if something within them was stirring awake.
Then came the whisper.
A low, inhuman voice slithered through the air, its source unknown.
"Welcome to Eclipse Academy, little souls. May your stay be... enlightening."
Tonaki felt a chill crawl down his spine. Something was terribly wrong with this school.
And he had only just arrived.
To be continued...
