Chapter 1
No! I can't find it! Jason quickly jumped from the seat of the bus. No! He rummaged through his clothes and searched every corner of his backpack, but he couldn't find the only thing that his mother had left him—an expensive antique watch. He broke out into a cold sweat. Ignoring everyone else's surprised gazes, he frantically thumped on the door and demanded the driver to stop the bus. Under the driver's contemptuous gaze, he jumped off the bus and ran in the opposite direction. I must have left it at my aunt's. It must be there! "Knock, knock! Knock, knock!" He pounded on the door and waited for a long time for his aunt to eventually open it. She had lost all the enthusiasm with which she had invited him over for the simple lunch. Now she opened the door only a slight c***k. She and her husband, who was nearly six feet tall, stared out at Jason as if he were a thief. "Auntie, I'm sorry. Please let me in. I think I left my watch at your house," Jason said anxiously as he gasped for air, his thin chest heaving. "I guess I forgot to put it back on when I went to clean off the soup you accidentally spilled on me." "Is that so?" his aunt asked, before coldly denying it and walking away without bothering to search for it. "I don't see any watch. Right, Andrew?" His uncle, Andrew, nodded and said, "Did you leave your watch somewhere else? Go look for it again." With that, Andrew tried to close the door. Jason immediately stepped forward and desperately jammed open the door with half of his body. "It must be here! I remember leaving it by the sink! Let me in! It's the only memento that my mom left me. I can't live without it!" he yelled. Andrew shoved Jason out and warned him, "If you want to mess around, then go ahead and see what happens. I wouldn't mind putting a bullet hole between your eyebrows. It's you who lost your watch. Remember that this has nothing to do with us. Even if you left it in our house, so what? You've lived in our house for so many years and you're in college now. It's time you paid us back." Jason froze. Looking at the cold faces of his aunt and uncle and their uncaring attitudes, he understood everything. He understood why his long-lost aunt and uncle had suddenly invited him over for dinner and why he'd had tomato juice accidentally spilled all over him. After his aunt had enthusiastically helped him take the watch off, his uncle had called him outside to admire the new swing in the yard, and kept distracting him with other things to make him forget about the watch. Everything that had happened today turned out to be a part of their plot. When his mother died unexpectedly five years ago, Jason, who had lost all of his family members, was taken to his aunt's house. He thought he had found a new person to rely on, but it wasn't long before he found out that his aunt just treated him like a free servant. Not only did she order him to do all the housework, she also refused to give him any money and locked him away in the narrow attic. Andrew even threatened to make him suffer if he told other people about it. Jason, who thought he had regained the warmth of a loving family, soon worked out the fact that his aunt and uncle had no affection for him and were not trustworthy. During those days he'd lived in their house, Jason noticed that the couple were very calculating. They often plotted together how to take advantage of their neighbors and friends, and searched through his personal possessions to find something of value. Luckily, Jason had carried his mother's memento with him at all times, otherwise they would have stolen it earlier. Even with such an unfair fate, Jason had never given up his dream of going to college. He secretly worked three jobs behind their backs. He was so tired one time that he suffered from pneumonia. Only after taking out big loans could he eventually get to college and move out of his aunt's house. He thought he had finally escaped from his nightmare. He hadn't gone back there for a while. A week ago, his aunt contacted him and softly invited him to come to her house for dinner and talk about his recent life this weekend.  He thought this was a sign of reconciliation. After all, his aunt was the only relative he had in the whole world, so Jason's heart had softened at this proposal, and he had agreed to go. However, he never expected... it would be a trap! His aunt and uncle conspired to lure him back in a bid to steal his mother's only memento, an expensive antique watch! Furiously, Jason rushed forward and grabbed Andrew by the collar, his eyes bloodshot, "I worked for your family for so many years and earned money little by little to pay for my college education! I don't owe you a dime! Give my mother's memento back to me! It's my treasure! It's my life!" Andrew crudely punched Jason in the face. Jason fell to the ground, his teeth broken inside his mouth. He wiped his face and found that his nose and mouth were full of blood. He sprang to his feet and threw himself at Andrew, despite the huge difference in their body sizes and strengths. However, he was knocked straight back down again. When Jason looked up, Andrew was standing over him with a spade in his hand. The sun was shining behind Andrew, and the weak Jason was completely shrouded in his tall shadow. Jason limped out of the community, his face strikingly bruised. Instead of getting his mother's watch back, he had lost two teeth. Should he call the police? No. That would be useless, because Andrew himself was a police officer. Jason returned to the dormitory coughing, his face covered in blood. His roommate, who was on a date tonight, wasn't there. Jason stood in the dark room with no lights on, the smell of blood filling the air. He had tried his best, but it was useless, because he couldn't beat Andrew. He hated himself more than ever. He wondered why he was so weak and why he couldn't be taller and stronger. Otherwise, he wouldn't have lost the only memento his mother had left for him. Jason stood on the balcony as the cold wind blew fiercely, but the indignation in his heart did not subside, even when his body had almost become a dry corpse. When he came to his senses, he discovered something very unusual. Two of his molars were broken and his arms were covered in cuts. His face was so swollen that his features were virtually unrecognizable. But he didn't feel any pain. When he had fought Andrew at the door of his aunt's house, he had only felt suppressed anger and forced submission to violence, and an absolutely one-sided strength. But in that moment, he felt no pain torturing him when he calmed down. He went to the mirror and scrutinized his cuts. He held his breath and pressed the cuts on his arm, but he felt nothing. He pressed the cuts hard, and yet he didn't feel any pain. "Why?" Jason was puzzled. When he had sprained his ankle one month ago, it had hurt so much that he couldn't walk properly for three days. Why didn't he feel any pain now that he was covered in wounds? If he hadn't just experienced the fight and known exactly how these wounds appeared on his body, and had been beaten black and blue, he would have suspected they were painted on. Goosebumps appeared all over his back. He felt very confused. He went into the kitchen, and hesitated for a long time before plucking up the courage to pick up a knife and cut his finger. When the blood gushed out of the wound, he was sure that he didn't feel any pain where his skin had been cut. He was completely at a loss, and looked baffled as the blood dripped onto the chopping board. What happened to me? "If you can start treatment right now, you'll have about a year to live. Since you don't have any health insurance, I've estimated the cost of all the treatments. Erm... look, the first phase of treatment will cost around $200,000," said Dr. Bob. He looked at Jason while speaking. Then pushed his glasses up his nose and eagerly picked up a phone, which had started to ring a few seconds ago. He took his eyes off the young man's ashen face, went over to the window, and began to talk wantonly. Jason, who had just been told he would only have a year to live, sat in his chair feeling cold all over. He had spent almost all of his savings to have his symptoms checked out, only to receive this unacceptable result. His body had changed in a weird way at some point, and his sensory nerves were not working at all. Only a year to live...A year? $200,000... and that's just the first phase. The doctor, who had just declared that he was dying, was cheerfully talking about his choices for the weekend dinner. "Excuse me, Dr. Bob, my illness..." Jason wanted to know more about his illness, but the doctor named Bob didn't end the phone call. Flirting with his female companion on the phone, he threw a medical chart at Jason and motioned for him to read it for himself. Jason asked no more questions. He left with the chart and cost estimate sheet in his hands feeling dejected. On the bus back to school, he felt a surge of deep sadness while looking through the window at the brightly lit city, and at the families and lovers who were snuggled together. He clutched his phone so tightly that he almost crushed it. The irony was that he didn't have enough strength to crush it. Was his brief life really coming to such an abject end? He was in a complete daze and didn't notice that his phone had unlocked automatically. An app named Monopoly was quietly downloading without the permission of the phone's owner...
