Chapter15

[015] The masked man twirled the g*n on his finger and asked a question in a giddy tone. “Okay. Now, does anyone have any questions? If so, can you just ask me in one go?” Everyone was silent. Dylan and his companions’ backs were soaked with sweat following their companion's death. The masked man jumped down from the wall and paced around between them, raising his voice. “Since no one wants to say anything, then you can just listen to me,” the masked man said in a callous tone, despite just killing a man. “Since you’re novices who can’t find any direction and didn’t read the instructions when you accepted the task, I’ll have to tell you what to do to keep the game going.” The masked man said the task was simple. All they had to do was head downtown and find a man named Joe, then bring him back alive. According to his description, it sounded like a pretty simple task that perfectly fitted the straightforward title “Do me a favor”, and its one-star difficulty. The masked man asked, “What do you think? Pretty simple, right? Ladies and gentlemen, why don’t you get a shuffle on then? There’s no time limit for this task, but as you can see, this world is not very safe. Bloodthirsty zombies can show up at any moment, and I doubt novices like you have many points. You’ll only get hungrier and thirstier if you keep wasting your time. Especially you lot...” He suddenly turned to Dylan and his companions and raised his voice, “You don’t have any points, unlike those two who have drunk plenty of water and bought themselves some weapons. They’re satiated and full of vigor, and they have handy weapons. But you’re just two poor wretches they’d dump at any moment to feed the zombies.” Hearing his words, Dylan and his companion suddenly remembered the fact that Jason and Zoe had disappeared inside the wall. Despite being a little confused, they did notice the strange robotic arm attached to Jason’s broken forearm, just as he had said. “You... what have you f**king done behind our backs!” Dylan yelled, his face red with anger. He glared at Jason and Zoe with fire in his eyes, as if the two people standing opposite him had deceived him with the worst of lies. Jason and Zoe were scared of the masked man, but they were also angry with him. It was clear that the wicked man was deliberately muddying the waters, getting them into trouble and turning them against each other. He clearly reveled in the idea that these strangers, who had been forced to work together by sheer misfortune, might end up killing each other. The masked man looked at Dylan’s angry face and couldn’t help but laugh. Jason gave him a faint look and understood that he’d got what he wanted. “Why did he do that?” Jason thought. They were here to complete this task, just like Dylan. Fighting one another would only make it more and more difficult to complete it. Seeing the masked man's uncaring attitude, Jason couldn’t help but wonder if he was doing this just for fun. The masked man spoke, “So, in order to earn dollars and points to survive, you should act quickly, my good little dogs.” They didn’t know how he did it, but his figure suddenly flickered like an old TV picture for a moment and disappeared out of thin air after he finished his revolting speech. It was like magic, which made everyone doubt the authenticity of the world again. However, when they looked back at the body of the man who’d been shot by the masked man, they remembered that just mere moments ago he’d been a living man who could talk and move. How, however, he was slowly becoming a cold corpse. Nothing gave them a stronger sense of shock than this. “I don’t understand...” Zoe murmured as she held Lily tightly to ease her tension, “Does this crazy world want people to survive or not?” Jason looked at the increasingly dark sky and said, “Maybe the world doesn’t want everyone to survive.” There was a flash of lightning in the leaden sky. It seemed that it was going to rain. While Jason and Zoe sadly looked at the man’s body, they didn’t notice that Dylan and his companion were exchanging glances in private. Dylan silently took an iron bar and clasped it in his hand, and the green-haired man picked up a brick from the edge of the wall and silently walked towards Zoe. “Watch out!” Lily cried as she saw Dylan about to swing the iron bar at the back of Jason’s head. With the solid iron bar in his hand, Dylan had planned to swing at Jason with all his strength, thinking it would definitely knock him out on the spot. Meanwhile, the green-haired man tried to knock Zoe out with the brick. They paid no attention to the little girl. As long as they could snatch Jason’s g*n and Zoe’s dagger, they could survive in this city full of zombies. They didn’t want to complete the task published by the masked madman. They regretted having logged into the app and entering this unfortunate world. Dylan firmly believed that there must be an exit somewhere. With weapons to protect themselves, they would certainly be able to find it. He didn’t show any mercy at all when he swung the iron bar. He was very sure that even if he killed Jason with it, he wouldn’t have to take any legal responsibility in this absurd world. The iron bar hit something, but it felt like it’d hit a solid iron plate instead of a fragile head. It shook Dylan’s arm so much that it went numb and his palm hurt like hell, causing the iron bar to almost slip out of his hand. He was shocked to see that he hadn’t hit an iron plate. Jason had easily caught the iron bar with his newly-equipped robotic arm, completely absorbing the heavy force of the swing. Jason himself felt a slight shock, but didn’t feel any pressure. In fact, it felt like casually grabbing a long soft inflatable balloon instead of an iron bar that the strong Dylan had swung at him with all his strength. Dylan almost froze, and Jason was also stunned by the situation. He had sensed a hidden danger behind him and was about to instinctively raise his hand to resist it, but the robotic arm seemed to perceive the crisis quicker than the rest of his body, acting first and grabbing the iron bar without him realizing it. Dylan’s sneak attack failed to cause any damage to Jason. He wanted to take back the iron bar, but failed to move it at all. Jason pulled the iron bar away from him with one arm, while Dylan used both. He strained and pulled as hard as he could, but despite trying his utmost and even falling backwards to put his weight behind him, he still couldn’t shake the iron bar away from Jason’s robotic arm. The tug of war was absolutely one-sided. Excitement appeared on Jason’s face. The 999-point robotic arm wasn’t cheap, but its strength buff was beyond his imagination. As Jason closed his fingers, the iron bar bent under its crushing force. When Dylan saw Jason crumple and twist the iron bar as if it were a paper cup, his eyes opened so wide that they almost fell out of his eye sockets. Jason pulled the iron bar so hard that the skin of Dylan’s hand almost peeled away. Eventually, it slipped out of Dylan’s hands and ended up in Jason’s. Jason swung the bar, pretending to hit Dylan whose face abruptly changed. He fell down on the ground and crawled backwards with his legs in a panicked manner. Not looking where he was going, he accidentally stumbled over a stone, smashing his head on the ground and knocking him out cold. Jason was speechless. Dylan had just knocked himself unconscious before he could even swing at him with the iron bar. Jason couldn’t help but laugh when he saw Dylan lying on the ground with his eyes turning white. Just then, someone shouted from behind him, "Hey! Don’t get carried away! Give me your g*n!” Jason looked back. Zoe was crouching on the ground with blood rolling down her head. Beside her were two broken bricks. She had been protecting Lily while the green-haired man had taken her dagger and pressed it hard against the back of her neck. Cold sweat rolled down Zoe's forehead, whose face had turned pale. She stared at Jason without blinking, silently begging him for help. “Quick! Now, throw me the g*n!” the green-haired man shouted, “Don’t make me kill her!”
