Did I just hear Lila correctly? She said that we should not be friends?
“What did you just say?” I asked her.
I watched as Lila’s shoulders dropped. She turned her attention to the table in front of her.
“I think maybe we shouldn’t be friends,” she said again.
I looked up at everyone at the table. For some reason, they all decided to get very quiet right then. I glanced over at Nina, hoping she might explain why Lila was suddenly saying this to me.
“Why do you not want to be friends?” I asked aloud.
“It just seems like us being friends is causing a lot of problems,” Lila said in a very small voice.
