Chapter004

LIAM WRIGHT “Centuries ago, the Silver Fang pack and the Blood moon pack made a covenant. It was a holy covenant made in the name of the Moongoddess. The Moonwitch of that time sealed it in the name of the higher powers. It was an unbreakable covenant, performed in a moment of desperation. It was bound to cause disaster one day. But in those days, a smaller disaster of the future was a wonderful trade off from the way things were. The world of werewolves was beset by a murdering demon from hell. It was the legendary Lunar Demon. The demon was nothing less than a terror. It was unstoppable and the strongest Alphas fell to its cursed might. So an alliance was formed between the remaining Alpha’s when they finally understood the situation. The covenant involved the clause that both packs would mate their first born pups to each other. It was a precaution to ensure that the alliance wasn’t broken. And it worked easily for centuries. The new found pack alliance quickly discovered a magical spell to lock away the Lunar demon in a sacred dungeon. It was not easy and many lives were lost, but they succeeded. The Lunar demon had been summoned by a group of foolish rogues. The demon slaughtered them all immediately it was free and from there it went on to spill werewolf blood. But thanks to the pack alliance, the demon was finally sealed. And most importantly, it could now only be summoned with the sacred lunar crescent and a magic spell.” I closed the book and looked at my daughter. She was already fast asleep and snoring lightly. My heart warmed. She was my beautiful baby girl. Only three years old, and she was all I had left. I read the ancient tale of our pack covenant to her as a bedtime story, but there was more to the story that I hadn’t told her. It was about her mother, and how she lost her. It was all my fault. Sometimes, I thought that must be why my daughter had never spoken a single word since birth. The doctors said she was clinically mute, but I knew she was giving me the punishment I deserved for my foolishness. It was a different time and I was younger then. But still those were no excuses for my actions. I broke the ancient covenant by mating with my first chance mate. I was meant to be mated to a wolf from our covenant pack, but instead I found my mate inside my own pack. She had been Lily's mother and I was in love with her in a way that I had never felt for any other woman. I couldn’t care less about some old dusty covenant when it came down to it. I was told that I could carry her as a concubine, but I must still fulfill the covenant. I refused completely. How could I betray my mate by taking another woman? She was the only one I wanted and needed. My life completely changed the night she died. We had only been together for one glorious year when she died in the pack house. I was broken at the news. And all I was left with from her was our beautiful daughter, Lily. I knew that the death of my mate was a consequence of my rebellion. I decided to remain without a mate from then on. I would rather remain mateless for the rest of my life than fulfill that cursed covenant. My pack elders wouldn’t have it. To them, fulfilling our pact and part of the covenant was non-negotiable. Still, they tried to negotiate with me when they noticed that their demands had little to no effect. But it changed when my father, the previous Lycan King, was dying. His last wish was for me to fulfill the covenant. He feared that my actions would bring about the destruction of our park. With all of that, I finally relented. I accepted Gamma Ellen Smith of the Silver Fang pack, pack-ordained mate, as my Luna. She was to be Lily’s new mother. Even though I knew that my father would rest peacefully in his grave now, and the pack elders would be relieved, I couldn’t help but feel guilty. I felt guilty whenever I looked at Lily. Her mother died for our love and now I was betraying her for some soulless relationship. Lily deserved better. Yet I would have a new Luna before long. That was why I took Lily to the park the next morning. And we met her. I was surprised when Lily laughed in front of her. That had never happened with anyone before. So I hadn’t hesitated to offer her the job of a nanny when I met her again. I knew she was innocent because Lily was a wonderful judge of character. She said her name was Lucinda and she agreed to my offer. I felt a little better after that. But it still didn’t feel like I was doing near enough to kill the guilt I felt. Nighttime reached quickly and I went to Lily’s room. I opened the door and Lucinda was already seated beside Lily’s bed. She was reading her bedtime story and Lily was smiling. I felt warm in my heart because I knew I made the right choice for Lily. At the very least, she was happy now. Was that the best I could do for her though? “Evening brother.” I turned swiftly as he materialized from the shadows to stand in front of me. I growled and showed him my teeth. It was the shadow lord, my twin brother, Dexter. “You’re not welcome here, Dexter. Leave now.” I said immediately. How could he come into my daughter’s room!? Dexter chuckled. “Why won’t you welcome me back? Haven’t I been exiled long enough?” He asked. “It’s you!” Someone blurted. We both turned back to see Lucinda staring with wide eyes while Lily hid under the sheets. Dexter’s eyes narrowed. “You…”
