Chapter 1: The Ride Home
The rhythmic hum of the car engine was the only sound as Emily stared out the window, watching the countryside roll past. The city had disappeared hours ago, replaced by the endless sprawl of farmland and thick clusters of trees. The late summer sky glowed with the golden light of the setting sun, casting long shadows over the landscape, but Emily hardly noticed. Her mind was elsewhere—back at home. She had spent the last three weeks at her Aunt Clara’s house in the city. It had been a break she hadn’t known she needed. The bustle of the city had been a nice change from her small, sleepy town, and the days spent shopping, seeing movies, and even just lounging around had been fun. But as much as she’d enjoyed it, Emily was more than ready to go home. She missed the quiet predictability of her own house, the way it always smelled faintly of pine and old books. She missed her dad, even though he had been away on a work trip when she left. Most of all, she missed Coco, her brown pit bull with the floppy ears and big, soulful eyes. She smiled just thinking about it. Coco was probably sprawled out on the couch, waiting for her like she always did. The thought made Emily’s heart race a little. She could already picture Coco’s wagging tail and the excited bark she’d let out when Emily finally walked through the door. Her phone buzzed in her lap, interrupting her thoughts. She glanced down and saw a message from her dad: *Almost home?* Emily smiled and typed back quickly. *On my way! Miss you!* Her dad had gotten home earlier that day, and the two of them had texted back and forth all afternoon about plans for dinner. He promised he’d grill steaks, Coco would get the scraps, and they’d spend the evening catching up. It sounded perfect, exactly what she needed after the busy trip. Her aunt, sitting behind the wheel, glanced over and smiled. "Excited to be back?" "You have no idea," Emily replied with a grin. "I miss Coco so much. And Dad, of course." "Of course," her aunt teased. "You’ve got a soft spot for that dog." Emily shrugged. "What can I say? Coco’s the best." The familiar roads began to appear, a few scattered houses here and there, the kind that belonged to people who had lived there their whole lives. Everything about it was comforting in its own way, like the town itself was welcoming her back. It felt like nothing had changed since she’d left, and that was exactly what she liked about it. No surprises, no big disruptions. As they neared her street, Emily could already feel the anticipation building in her chest. She imagined the front door swinging open, Coco leaping into her arms, her dad laughing at the chaos. Everything would be just the way it was supposed to be. The car turned onto her street, and her house came into view. The porch light was on, even though the sun hadn’t fully set yet, casting a soft, warm glow on the familiar brick exterior. Her dad’s truck was in the driveway, and the sight of it made Emily’s grin widen. Home. Her aunt pulled into the driveway and turned off the engine. "Here we are," she said, looking over at Emily with a smile. "Want me to come in?" Emily shook her head, already reaching for the door handle. "I’m good. Thanks so much for driving me, Aunt Clara. I’ll see you soon?" "Anytime, kiddo. Give Coco a hug for me." "Will do!" Emily called over her shoulder as she climbed out of the car and shut the door. She grabbed her bag from the backseat, her excitement bubbling over as she headed for the front door. The house felt strangely quiet. Coco wasn’t barking like she usually did when someone came up the walkway, but maybe she was asleep. Or in the backyard. Either way, Emily was about to change that. She fumbled with her keys for a moment, her heart racing with anticipation. The door creaked open, and she stepped into the familiar warmth of her home. "Coco! I’m home!" she called out, expecting the sound of paws thudding against the hardwood floor. But there was no sound. No excited barking. No sign of Coco at all. Emily hesitated, peering into the dimly lit living room. The house was exactly how she had left it—neat, orderly, with Coco’s toys scattered near the couch—but the silence was unsettling. Her dad was supposed to be home, but the house was empty. No smells from the kitchen, no sound of footsteps from upstairs. "Dad?" she called out, her voice echoing faintly in the stillness. Nothing. She dropped her bag by the door and stepped farther into the living room. Her chest tightened slightly, a flicker of unease rising in her stomach. The house was quiet—too quiet. Emily crossed into the kitchen, half expecting to see her dad standing by the stove, maybe with a grin on his face, ready to surprise her. But there was no one. A note was stuck to the fridge, hastily scribbled in her dad’s familiar handwriting: *Ran out to grab something. Be back soon. Love you!* Emily let out a small breath of relief. Of course. He’d probably just stepped out for a minute, maybe ran into town to pick up something for dinner. But where was Coco? "Coco!" she called again, louder this time, walking toward the back door. Her heart skipped when she saw a flash of brown fur bolt through the backyard. There she was, tail wagging, body bouncing excitedly as she saw Emily through the glass door. Emily smiled and slid open the door. Coco ran toward her, practically launching herself into Emily’s arms with a joyful bark. "There’s my girl!" Emily laughed, rubbing Coco’s head and feeling the familiar warmth of her fur against her palms. "I missed you too." For a moment, everything felt right again.
