Kylan ran through the pack house like someone chased by the demons. He held a letter in his game, squeezing it tightly occasionally.
He stopped running before his father's office, knocking loudly at the door.
- Come in. - Felix shouted after a few seconds. He was agitated since his son mind-linked him a few minutes ago about some urgent matter. Alpha looked at his mate, who was also present. Both of them were nervous, yet she could manage it better.
Kylan came in almost immediately after the invitation.
- Son, what is going on? You are acting weird. - Shioban looked at the young man, waiting for an explanation.
Kylan remained silent, pulling his hand out. His parents gave him a questioning look before Alpha grabbed the paper and read it.
After a few lines, he sat back on his chair, and his face became pale.
Shioban came closer since her mate looked worried about whatever was written on the paper. His hands were shaking; what was unusual.
Before she could peek at the letter, Felix put it down.
-She left. - He whispered.
- Who left? - Luna asked, scared to hear the answer. She suspected what her mate meant, but still, she had to hear the answer.
- Kaitlyn. - Felix confirmed her suspicions.
- Why?- Shioban asked, looking at both men, dear to her heart. They had the same expression. - Was she not happy here? Did she not feel safe?
- According to this letter, none of that is a matter. She did not want to put us in danger. Kaitlyn was sure her father could find her one day, and his wrath could affect the whole pack. She said it is a hard decision, but she cannot see us suffering because of her.
Shioban could not listen to this anymore, so she grabbed the letter, reading it by herself. It was a goodbye letter. Kaitlyn was not planning on coming back. It was unbelievable. Everything was going so well. They were finally starting to be a real family.
- Why this sudden change of mind? - Luna asked absentmindedly. - She was safe here for eighteen years. There was no reason for this to change. - Where did you find it? - Shioban looked at her son.
- I was going to ask Kaitlyn to join me on the run around the pack. She spent so much time in her room that I thought it would be good for her. I knocked on her door multiple times, but there was no answer, so I got worried. When I came in, the letter was on the pillow, and the window was ajar. I read the letter and mind-linked Dad. That is all I know. - Kylan replied. His voice was breaking, and the tears in his eyes threatened to escape.
Shioban looked back at her mate, but he was just shaking his head. She lifted the paper and sniffed it. Kaitlyn's scent was still lingering on it. Their daughter was gone again.
- We need to look for her. - Luna said without hesitation. - She can not be that far. We need to make her believe she is safe here, with her family. Kaitlyn knows nothing about the outside world. Without her beast, she won't be able to defend herself.
Felix glanced at his mate. His heart shattered, seeing how devastated she was. Kaitlyn could not be her daughter by blood, but she was her child, just like Kylan.
- We will send someone to look for her. - He promised.
Kylan raised his head, looking at his parents.
- I will go and look for her. - He offered.
- No! - Alpha objected. - Going there alone is a madness. If the rouges would sense you, it could end up tragically. I will send four squads to search for Kaitlyn.
- But, Dad, my sister is out there alone too. I can't sit and wait for someone to look for her. Please assign me to one of the squads. I won't be alone. There will be others with me. - Kylan pleaded.
Shioban glanced at her son. She was happy to see him engaged so much. Her boy went a long way from who he was a few months ago to who he is right now. Luna felt proud of him.
-Let him go. It is his sister. - Shioban told her mate. Felix stayed quiet for a while before speaking.
- OK, go and get yourself ready. I will choose the warriors who will be the best for this mission. Came back here in an hour. Everything should be ready by then.
Kylan stood up from his seat.
- We will find her and bring her home. - He said with confidence. Then he left the office.
Kylan was getting ready in his room, and the anger flowed through his body. Why does his mother have to be so stubborn? Of course, she could not simply accept the letter and move on.
Now, he was forced to play the role of loving brother all over again. It was not his plan at all, but after his mother demanded this search party, he had no choice. Hopefully, Kaitlyn is far away right now, and his father will show some understanding in looking for someone who does not want to be found.
Kylan was sure the letter would close the whole case. He still could remember the shock on the girl's face when she discovered the truth. Kaitlyn was naive beyond imagination. It took him only a while to make her believe they could be a family. Even more shocking was that his parents fell into the same trap. Apparently, they also dreamed about their reunion.
Kylan could not stop smiling when he thought about how well his plan went.
Of course, he could kill her back in the forest, but something stopped him from doing that. It was a feeling he tried to push somewhere deep down. It was a fear. He denied it, but he was scared; Kaitlyn was a dragon, and he read enough to know that those shifters were unpredictable.
That is why he chose the safer option. Without her necklace, she was exposed to whoever was after her. Now, she was forced to run away and hide before those who wanted to find her. Kylan couldn't care less about her future. As long as he got what he wanted, she could live somewhere, fearing her previous life.
He was finally free. No one else will be able to take his spotlight in the pack or his family. He will one day become an Alpha and take a chosen mate who will obey him. No one would go above him.
Kylan smirked, imagining his future life.
Nonetheless, now, he still has to pretend for a few more days and become a hero who tries to save his sister. Soon, everything will go back to how it was always supposed to be.
Kaitlyn was strolling on her wobbly legs. She dreamed about some rest, but fear was stopping her from it. She was not sure how far she was able to move from her pack, but it did not matter. It was probably still not enough. Kaitlyn feared it would never be enough.
She still could not process what Kylan did to her. The girl was cursing herself for stupidity. Elena was warning her to be careful, but she ignored it, craving for a family.
~ It was not your fault. ~ Her dragon tried to console her, but Kaitlyn was not ready for that. She was the only one responsible for their current situation. Kylan played her again. He had planned it for a long time while she enjoyed their newfound connection.
- There is no one else to blame. - The girl hissed, as her feet were full of blisters.
~ We were both wrong. I gave him a credit of trust, too. ~ Elena replied calmly.
- Well said, credit of trust. I erased the whole past, believing he changed. Is it not what they say? Learn from your mistakes? I clearly failed this lesson. - Kaitlyn mumbled under her breath.
She slipped under the tree, giving up.
- I need some rest. There is no way I would move any further.
~ Good. We need to get our strength back. Get some rest, and I will make sure we are safe. ~ Elena assured her.
Kaitlyn tried to believe her, but she was still scared. Kylan ripped the necklace, which was protecting her for so many years. What if it was broken now? Maybe her father was already somewhere close?
Now, she could not think about it any longer since tiredness took over her.
~ Wake up, wake up. ~ Elena was restless in her mind.
- What is it?- Kaitlyn opened her eyes.
~ Something is not far from us. We need to move. ~ Her beast replied.
The girl stood up to her feet. They were still painful, but she felt a little better.
There was a howl in the distance.
- Rouges!- The girl started to run, but it was getting closer and closer.
Kaitlyn stopped as there was no way she could outrun them.
~ What are you going to do? ~ Elena asked.
- We need to fight back. I am not going to let them kill us. - Kaitlyn reached for her necklace.
~ This is madness. Please don't do it.
- I have no choice. - The girl said coldly.
She could hear the wolves coming closer. Kaitlyn pulled the chain harder.
- Kaitlyn, no! - She heard the voice coming from behind.
Someone was standing nearby, but it was hard to say something more since the cloak hid its body.
- They found me. - Kaitlyn whispered, and her body gave up. There was nothing else, except the darkness.
