Two months later.
The last few months were like a dream for Kaitlyn. Her life took a 180-degree turn. She felt like a genuine part of the family for the first time since she finally had a brother. Kylan showed a side Kaitlyn would never expect him to have.
They were close like never before. When he was not occupied with bullying her, she could see his true personality, which was terrific.
This young man was dedicated to the pack, deeply engaged in everything happening on their lands. When they were not with her, Kylan spent his time in Alpha's office, discussing the new ideas with their father.
That was another thing that made Kaitlyn happy. Shioban and Felix got their son back. He finally became what they expected him to be. The girl could see them watching him with pride in their eyes.
Kaitlyn regretted all those wasted years when they could have been siblings as they were now.
Even Elena was slowly changing her opinion about Kylan. There were still some thorns about who he was in the past, but she was less suspicious now.
Kaitlyn also discovered her brother had a lot of knowledge about her kind. He seemed interested in dragons' history. They spent a lot of time discussing since he found her in their library while she was trying to find some information.
- What are you doing here? - Kylan asked, entering the room.
Kaitlyn shut the book she was reading, embarrassed for being caught.
- Nothing.
- That looked different from my perspective. - Kylan said with a soft smile. He was smiling a lot lately. In the past, Kaitlyn thought he could not unless it was a cold smirk.
- Fine. - She let out a breath. - I am trying to gather some information about the dragons. Since there are none in sight, all I can do is read to know my kind better.
- I fully understand you. Werewolves learn about their history and traditions since they are pups. We mostly find it boring and a waste of time. - Kylan giggled, and Kaitlyn joined him.
- But in your case, it is different. If I were you, nothing would be more important than learning about my ancestors. Did you find anything interesting?
- Not much. - The girl admitted.
- It is probably because you look at the wrong book. - Kylan gave her a mischievous smile. Then he went to the shelf and reached for the book with an old leather cover. He put it in front of Kaitlyn. She leaned forward, trying to read the letters on top. Thanks to the book's age, it took her a while since they were almost impossible to read.
- Asterium and Wisterium- the world of shifters. - Kaitlyn finally said. - What is Wisterium? I have never heard this name.
- According to what is written there, it is another continent, far away from here—the dragon's land. - Kylan replied with a smile. - At least it is what it was in the past.
Kaitlyn was looking at the book and could feel Elena's interest. Kaitlyn looked at the book again. It looked ancient, but that could be the best source of knowledge about her kind.
- Read it. There are some interesting facts about dragon's gifts. - Kylan glanced at her. - I wonder what your gift is.
Kaitlyn shrugged her arms before touching the necklace.
- I guess we will never find out. I can't even shift. I understand my mother did this to protect me, but it is so painful not to be able to shift. I would like to see Elena in her full glory.
- I know what you feel. - Kylan put his hand on her arm.
- Don't get me wrong, but I don't think you do. - Kaitlyn hung her head.
-Do not lose hope. One day, you may be able to do as you please.- Her brother said, patting her on the arm. Kaitlyn did not want to ruin this moment, so she said nothing.
- I will leave you with your lecture. - He said before leaving
Kaitlyn spent hours reading about the dragons. With every page, she got more amazed. They were magnificent creatures, the strongest and wisest among all shifters; there was no doubt about that. She could feel Elena's pride radiating in her mind for being a dragon, even if she could not use her full potential.
- I am sorry. - Kaitlyn apologized to her beast.
~ For what?~ Elena asked, sincerely surprised.
- For being stuck with me here. We should be free; you should be free. But thanks to my father, we have to live like in prison, even without the cell.- Kaitly mumbled.
~ Don't be ridiculous. It is not a high price for being alive. ~ Her beast objected in an angry tone. ~ I do not know what awaits us, but this cannot be good if your mother put so much effort into saving us.
- You are probably right. It is so strange that the man I have never met was able to ruin my life. I want to meet him one day to find out why he did it. - This time, anger could be heard in Kaitlyn's voice.
She grabbed the book she brought from a library one day. There was a picture of her mother and a vast black dragon sitting beside her. Even in the book, he looked dangerous.
~ Don't you even dare to think about this. Meeting him will do us no good. We should stay away from him- as far as possible.~ Elena sounded scared.
- We will. Forgive me for my childish words. - Kaitlyn felt embarrassed for her behavior. Her beast understood the seriousness of the situation better than the girl.
The next day, Kylan came to her with an unusual favor.
- There were signs of rouges near our borders, we need to check them, would you like to join me? - He asked, surprising her. - You spent too much time at home, like a prisoner. It is time to go out.
- I would be more than useless. - Kaitlyn laughed. She could not shift. Even her sense of smell was not as good as other werewolves. But the idea of coming out was tempting.
- It is probably nothing serious; there is no threat, but the protocol makes us check it. I could use your company; we could discuss what you learned about the dragons. - Kylan looked at her with puppy eyes.
- Why not?- Kaitlyn agreed.
- Great, I will meet you downstairs in ten minutes. - Her brother waved his hand and left her room.
Kaitlyn put on her hoodie and jacket since it was chill outside.
As promised, Kylan waited for her in the hall.
- Good choice. You will ride on my back until we get to the right place. - He smiled, seeing her.
They left the packhouse, and the man shifted into his wolf. Kaitlyn sat on his back, and the beast sprinted towards the woods. Kylan dashed, and the girl was amazed he could maintain his speed with all the extra baggage. For her luck, he avoided the low-hanging branches, which could be painful in close contact. After twenty minutes of this crazy ride, they finally slowed down in the middle of some clearing. Kaitlyn slipped off the wolf's back, standing carefully on her shaking legs.
- Wow. - She whispered, trying to regain her balance, while Kylan disappeared between the trees to shift back and put some clothes on. He came back after a few minutes.
- I could never imagine myself, your wolf was so fast. - Kaitlyn giggled.
- Thank you- he replied simply as his eyes scanned the surroundings. They had to be close to where the rouges were spotted, as he was nervous. Kaitlyn could sense or hear nothing, but it was not a surprise, so she trusted her brother. The girl involuntarily moved closer to the man.
- I hope we are safe here. - She said quietly.
- Yes, we are, at least I am. - Kylan replied, making her look at him. The man was standing before her, but his eyes were different now. It was like a return to the past since he looked at her coldly.
- Kylan, what is going on?- Kaitlyn asked carefully.
- Nothing, maybe, except this. - Her brother laughed and grabbed her necklace before she could even react, pulling it with force. The chain broke, snapping in his grip.
Kaitlyn was stunned at the first moment, unable to speak.
- Why would you do this?
Kylan laughed coldly, looking at her necklace in his hand.
- Why? Because I hate you, that is why. I always hated you. I gave you a chance to leave, yet you came back. I am not going to make this mistake again. Those last months were like torture for me. Pretending that I cared about you was the most challenging task. But it paid off since you and my parents fell for my tricks. You all were so naive. But now it is over. - He pulled a paper from his pocket. - Sign this.
Kaitlyn looked at the piece of paper. It was a letter that looked like she had written it. Kylan did a great job.
The man slapped her across her face.
- I told you to sign it, not read it. Consider it my gift. It will look like you left to save our family.
Anger was boiling in Kaitlyn. She took a pen he had thrown on the ground, putting her signature on the paper. Her cheek stung, but his betrayal was much more painful. She felt a strange sensation in her body. It felt like it was on fire.
~ Get ready. It may be painful, but I cannot stop since our protection is gone. ~ Elena said in her mind.
- What can be painful?
~ The shift.~ Her beast replied, and at that exact moment, excruciating pain exploded in her body. Kaitlyn fell to the ground while her bones were breaking and relocating. She could feel her body expanding, the skin on her back ripped, releasing two massive wings. The pain slowly subsided. Kaitlyn stood up on her new legs, surprised at how natural it felt like she had done it many times before.
She looked down at Kylan, who watched her with wide eyes. Kaitlyn could sense his fear, even if he tried to hide it.
~ We can kill him now. ~ Elena said venomously, and the girl was willing to listen to her.
- Do not try anything. - Kylan said like he could read her mind.- I will destroy it, and your protection will be gone for good. - He squeezed the necklace.
~ I do not care. He needs to pay for this. ~ Elena snapped.
- Stay calm. - Kaitlyn advised.
- You know, your father probably knows already where you are. Take this and disappear. - Kylan threw the necklace on the ground. - It depends on you how long it will take him to find you. Leave those lands and never come back. - He gave her the last disgusted look before shifting and sprinting away.
Elena urged Kaitlyn to follow him, but the girl stopped her.
- Leave him. He will pay for this one day. Now, we need to find someplace to hide. First, we need to shift back.
Kaitlyn focused on the image of her human form. Slowly, her body started to change, shrinking, and the white scales were replaced with skin. Soon, she was her old self. Surprisingly, she still had her clothes on.
Kaitlyn grabbed the necklace, tying it up around her neck.
- We need to move.
There was a bright dot blinking on the huge map, like a drop of blood.
The man sitting on the black throne smirked coldly. He was handsome, with blue eyes, black hair, and muscular body. He looked like someone in his early forties.
- Asterium. You were able to hide there for eighteen years.
King Lucius let out a cold laugh.
