Two weeks later.
Kaitlyn could not believe what was happening. She could swear some magic was involved here.
Since she came back, Kylan has acted like a stranger. The girl could not recognize the man she had known for eighteen years. It looked like someone had killed him and used his body for their own purposes. Kaitlyn could not find any other logical explanation for this miracle since people could not change this way.
The girl was ready to doubt her senses.
Kaitlyn met her ex-mate for the first time two days after her return. She was making herself a beverage when Kylan entered the kitchen. Only two were there, and the girl shivered, remembering how such meetings usually ended. Kaitlyn tried to remain calm, but Kylan just gave her a nod, grabbing a water bottle, before leaving. She stood there in utter shock, staring at the spot where Kylan stood just a while ago. Her heart was still beating like crazy. In the past, he would never miss a chance to upset her in any possible way, knowing she would do nothing since there were no witnesses that could prove his guilt. Many times, he was the one to leave the room with a smile on his face while Kaitlyn was on the edge of tears, swallowing his cruel words.
~ Probably, he was not prepared to find me here. ~ The girl thought to herself.
~ We need to be careful. ~ Elena advised, and Kaitlyn could not agree more.
-Honey, there you are. - Luna Shioban said, making her jump. - Is everything OK? You look like you saw a ghost. Did Kylan say something to you? I saw him on my way here.
Kaitlyn shook her head.
- Everything is fine. Did you look for me? - The girl looked at her mother.
- I was wondering if you would like to join us for dinner. You cannot have all the meals in your room. This is your house, not a prison. - Luna gave her a sad look.
Kaitlyn felt a pinch of guilt seeing it.
- You are right. I will gladly join you for dinner.
That would be a perfect occasion to check her theory.
- Splendid. It is a spaghetti night. - Shioban clapped her hands.
- I will be there on time. - Kaytlyn laughed.
In the evening, she felt nervous again, ready to skip the meal, but she could not disappoint her parents.
Kaitlyn entered the dining room, looking around since it was still empty. Kylan could hide somewhere in the corner.
~ Do not be childish. He would not attack you here. Be careful, but not paranoid. ~ Elena scolded her.
Soon, Alpha and Luna joined her while omegas served the food.
- We can start; Kylan won't be eating. He went out with his friends. - Felix said dryly. He was still mad at his son.
Kaitlyn relaxed, enjoying her food. They were in the middle of the meal, chatting about some not-important things, when the door opened, and Kylan came in. Kaitlyn tensed immediately, but the man seemed to be in a great mood.
- It smells so good I could not help myself, even if I am full. - He said, grabbing a plate and helping himself with food.
- Do not worry. There is still plenty of spaghetti. - Shioban offered him a smile, glancing at her husband, who sat there with a gloomy expression.
Kylan took his usual seat and dug into his food. He was done in less than two minutes.
- That was great. Thank you. - The man said, standing up. - I will go back to my room. Have a lovely evening.
He proceeded to give them all a nod, except his mother, whom he kissed on her cheeks.
After he left, Kaitlyn quickly looked at her parents. She was right, as they also looked perplexed by Kylan actions.
- That was interesting. - Felix mumbled. - It looks like he considered my words.
Both women gave him a questioning look.
- What are you talking about? - Shioban raised her brow.
- I just scared him a little, but I guess it worked. - Felix raised his hands, defending himself.
~ And there is your answer. ~ Elena said, smirking in Kaitlyn's mind.
The girl was ready to shake her head, but they were still sitting at the table.
- You do not know Kylan. Nothing can scare him for too long.
Kaitlyn decided to oversee the young man. If his behavior were a facade, he would make a mistake soon and show his true face again.
The following days brought no changes. Kylan was polite, ensuring not to stay close to Kaytlyn for too long, as she was still uncomfortable with his presence. Kylan did not look to stay with her alone anymore unless it was a simple coincidence. Yet he joined almost all dinner, engaging himself in small talks with his parents and the girl.
For the first time in a long time, Kaitlyn felt relaxed, being with her family, as it always was supposed to be. Whatever Alpha told his son, it seemed to significantly impact him since he acted more maturely than ever before. Kaitlyn was sure she was not the only one to notice his change.
Two weeks later, she was still under the impression that Kylan had grown up during the last time.
She was resting in her room after dinner with her family. It was a lovely evening, filled with jokes and playful bantering between them all. Kylan, from time to time, made some comments, but none were harmful. Kaitlyn had to admit she had a perfect time.
She was ready to take a bath when there was a knock at the door.
Kaitlyn went to open it when the scent hit her nose.
Kylan was behind the door.
- I know I should not be here, but I can't do it anymore. - The man started to talk almost immediately.
Kaitlyn watched him with wide-open eyes while Kylan continued.
- Can I come in? Of course, I can't. - He pointed out when Kaitlyn did not reply. - Can we talk in some other place where you will feel safer?
- What do you want to talk about? - She asked, watching him carefully, but Kylan looked sincerely embarrassed.
- I think I owe you an apology. - The man said, looking at the ground. - For everything.
Kaitlyn stayed silent for a while.
- Please come in. - She finally spoke, letting him in.
- Thank you.
Kylan entered her room, looking around.
- Please take a seat. - Kaitltn pointed to one of the bean bags lying on the floor. She preferred them over the regular chairs.
Kylan sat down, immediately sinking into the bag. Kaitlyn pulled out the other bean bag and placed it before him.
- I was a duche from the very start. I could not accept you, and this hatred dominated my life. - Kylan said, hanging his head lowly. - It was childish and cruel what I did to you. After all, you were only a child left all alone. I should be a brother to you, but all I could do was deny your existence, as I thought you stole my parent's love.
Kaitlyn was silent, listening to Kylan's words.
- But all that was nothing compared to what I did to you at the end. That was a cruelty beyond any. I knew you were my mate; I could handle it differently, but all I could think about was how to humiliate you even more.
- What made you change your mind? - Kaitlyn finally asked. The memories were still painful.
- I would like to say my father had nothing to do with that, but that would be a lie. But that helped me to understand a lot. I will be an Alpha one day. Alpha should care about his people and not let emotions control him, especially the wrong emotions. I need to grow up and become the man I always should be. - Kylan offered her a small smile. - But that is not what I wanted to say.
- Then what you want to tell me then. - Kaitlyn looked at him.
- What was done cannot be undone. I want to start again. Of course, I do not expect you to trust me straight away, and there was a lot of bad blood between us. We can't be mates again, but we still try to be siblings, just like a true family. - Kylan glanced at the girl.
Kaitlyn opened her mouth, but the man stopped her.
- You do not have to answer now; think about this first.
Kaitlyn felt tears building in her eyes. Kylan was watching her with concern.
- It was all I ever wanted to hear. - She whispered, blushing.
- I am sorry for wasting so many years. - The man admitted sincerely.
- I want it, too. To have a family. - Kaytlin wiped off her tears. This time, they were tears of joy.
Kylan looked at her and nodded.
- I promise you will have one. I cannot fix the past, but I can offer you a better future.
He stood up from his seat.
- I will be off now. You need some rest.
- Goodnight, Kylan.
- Goodnight, little sister. - He replied before leaving her room.
Kaitlyn sat on her bed.
- I can't believe in what just happened.- She mumbled.
~Me neither. ~ Elena said in her mind. ~ Let's not get too excited.
Kaitlyn snarled.
- I think he meant what he said.
~ Maybe, but maybe not. It is better to be safe than sorry. ~ Her beast replied.
- Do you trust anyone? - Kaitlyn asked, annoyed.
~ I prefer to be careful. But I hope you are right and I am wrong. I will gladly admit my mistake. ~ Elena replied, smirking.
- I am sure you will have to.
Kylan returned to his room. He opened a drawer at his desk and looked at the photo in a frame that was inside. It was a photo of their family while he and Kaitlyn were still kids.
He smiled and placed the frame on top of his desk.
