Chapter 7

I take off my clothes and shift into my wolf. I pick up my clothes off the ground with my mouth and run as fast as I can back to my house. Once I reach my back yard I shift back and get dressed. I enter the kitchen and hope that no one is home. I don’t want to face any of them. I peak into the living room and see that it’s empty. My feet feel like lead as I run up the stairs to my room. I lock my door behind me and let out a deep breath in frustration. What am I going to do now?

Being his mate is the last thing I wanted, but now do I even have a choice? If I don’t he will frame my dad for things I’m sure he isn’t aware of. My family could be cast out of the pack as rogues or worse my father could be killed. My brother would no longer become the next beta. It would destroy my family. I sit down on the edge of my bed in defeat.

I can’t believe that Alpha Henry would be diving into illegal business. Is this how are pack has thrived over the years because of these side hustles? I’ve always respected the alpha. He was never mean or cruel always took care of his pack. I would never guess he would be involved in stuff like this. Maybe that’s where Carter learned it from. It seems they are both manipulative in pretending to be something they are not. Tricking everyone to believe they are good people.

I’m lost in thought when I hear a door shut from downstairs making me jump. I check the time on my phone and see it’s almost 5 o’clock must be my mom. I’m sure my dad and brother will be home shortly.

I go my bathroom and check my appearance in the mirror. I quickly splash some water on my face to hide any sign that I have been crying. I make my way downstairs and see my mom as I enter the kitchen.

“ Oh hey sweetie, how was your day?”

“ It was ok” I say trying to sound convincing so she doesn’t suspect anything is wrong. “ Are you sure? You haven’t seemed to be yourself lately.” she says looking over at me. She always had a way of knowing when me or my brother were lying. I guess it’s a mom thing. “ Yea mom I’m fine just had a lot going on this past month. What’s for supper?” I ask trying to change the subject. “ How does meatloaf and mashed potatoes sound? She starts mixing together the meat and seasonings in a bowl.

“ Sounds good to me. want any help?”

“ Sure, why don’t you start peeling and cutting the potatoes” I grab the peeler from the drawer and start on the potatoes as she makes the meatloaf. She doesn’t press any further which I am grateful.

A little while later, she pulls the meatloaf out of the oven and I finish putting the mashed potatoes in a bowl. Just in time my dad and brother get home. I watch as my dad goes over to my mom and wraps his arms around her waste and kisses her cheek.

“ mmmm, something smells good in here” he says. My mom turns around to give him a quick kiss on the lips. “ It’s meatloaf and mashed potatoes go sit down. It’s ready”. My mom carries the meatloaf over to the table on a platter and sets it down. She takes a seat across from my dad and my brother sits across from me.

“ You men have been busy lately with beta training” my mom says passing the mashed potato’s to my brother. “ Well there is going to be an announcement at the banquet on Saturday” My dad says. “Oh” my mom looks at him with a surprised look. “ Yes, we couldn’t say anything earlier , but now that Alpha Henry is making it official” he shrugs. “He will be stepping down as alpha and handing it over to Carter earlier than expected. So that means I will no longer be beta and Nick will be stepping in.” he says taking a bite of meatloaf.

“ Well that is a surprise, but I know your father trained you well and you will make an excellent beta” she pats my brother on his arm. “ Thanks mom, dad has been training me for a long time now and I am ready!”

“ Congratulations” I say biting my lip thinking about the conversation with Carter earlier. I look at my parents and how proud they are of my brother. Don’t get me wrong my brother definitely deserves to be beta. He has trained hard for it. I just wish the circumstances were different. I wish I could go back to that night of party and just told myself to stay home.

I listen as my family continues to talk about the banquet and my brother becoming beta. I see how happy they are. If my dad knew what the Alpha has been doing behind his back it would crush him, my brother too. My dad is a good honest guy he would never be involved in anything shady or illegal. They considered Alpha Henry and his family as friends, but they really aren’t who they think they are. They are manipulative and deceitful both are good at hiding behind a mask. I wonder if the Luna knows or is she also a fake like them.

I chew on my lip getting lost in my thoughts. I can’t let them destroy my family. They have worked so hard for this pack. I will have to be strong and do what I have to to protect them. I will have to go tomorrow see him and accept him as my mate even if it kills me.
