Chapter Saven

700 Words
The headlights behind them did not fade. Elena kept her eyes on the side mirror longer than she meant to, watching the distance between their car and the one trailing them shrink with steady, deliberate intent. It was not reckless pursuit. It was controlled. Patient. That made it worse. “They’re not even trying to hide it,” she said. “They don’t need to,” Adrian replied. His voice remained level, his attention fixed on the road ahead. One hand rested firmly on the steering wheel while the other shifted gears with precise, unhurried movements. There was no panic in him, no visible tension, and that unsettled her more than if he had been reacting. Elena tightened her grip against the edge of her seat. “Can we lose them?” “Yes.” The answer came too easily. “How?” she asked. Adrian did not respond immediately. Instead, he accelerated slightly, then eased off just enough to keep their speed unpredictable. The road ahead stretched into a dimly lit corridor of empty space, the city thinning out behind them. “They expect us to run,” he said finally. “And we’re not going to?” she asked. “We are,” he replied. “Just not the way they think.” The car behind them adjusted its speed again, maintaining distance without falling back. Elena felt her pulse rise. “They’re matching us.” “Yes.” “That’s not reassuring.” “It’s not meant to be.” She exhaled sharply and forced herself to look forward again. The road curved ahead, and Adrian took it without slowing, his control steady even as the car shifted slightly under the turn. “You’ve done this before,” she said. “Yes.” “That doesn’t make me feel better.” “It shouldn’t.” For a moment, silence settled between them, but it wasn’t empty. It was charged with something sharper now, something that made every second feel heavier. Elena glanced at the mirror again. “They’re closer.” Adrian didn’t respond. Instead, he slowed. She turned toward him immediately. “What are you doing?” “Letting them think they’re gaining,” he said. “That’s not a strategy, that’s a mistake.” “It’s neither.” The distance between the cars closed quickly now. Too quickly. Elena’s chest tightened. “Adrian—” “Wait.” The word was quiet, but it held enough weight to stop her. The road ahead split suddenly, one path continuing straight while another cut sharply to the side, barely visible in the low light. At the last possible moment, Adrian turned. Hard. The car shifted under the sudden movement, tires gripping the pavement as they slipped into the narrow side road. Elena caught herself against the door, her breath catching as the main road disappeared behind them. “They missed it,” she said, her voice lower now. “For now.” The road they had entered was darker, less maintained. The buildings were sparse, and the space felt tighter. Elena turned to look behind them. Nothing. The headlights were gone. “They’re not there,” she said. “No.” Her shoulders dropped slightly, but the tension didn’t leave. “They’ll figure it out,” she added. “Yes.” “So we didn’t lose them.” “We delayed them.” Elena leaned back, her breathing slowing but not settling. “That’s not comforting.” “It’s not supposed to be.” The car continued forward, the silence returning but carrying something different now. Elena looked at him again. “You weren’t worried,” she said. “No.” “Why?” Adrian’s gaze shifted briefly toward her. “Because you’re with me.” The words were simple. But they landed differently this time. Elena didn’t respond immediately. She looked away, her thoughts shifting in a way she couldn’t quite control. This wasn’t just about escaping anymore. It was about staying ahead. And she was starting to understand that he already knew how far ahead they needed to be. The road stretched forward, empty for now. But neither of them believed it would stay that way.
