The moment stretched longer than it should have.
Elena saw the man’s hand tighten slightly around the gun, and for a second everything else seemed to fall away. The narrow passage, the dim light, even the second man standing off to the side faded into the background as her focus fixed on that single movement.
Adrian moved before she could react.
It wasn’t sudden or reckless. It was controlled and exact, like he had already anticipated what would happen. He stepped forward at the same moment the man began to raise the weapon fully, closing the distance just enough to throw off his aim.
The gun went off.
The sound echoed sharply through the passage, louder than it should have been in such a confined space. Elena flinched, her hands rising instinctively, but she forced herself not to stop.
Adrian had already reached him.
He redirected the man’s arm before a second shot could be fired, shifting his weight and forcing the angle away from them. The movement was efficient, without hesitation, and it created just enough space for Elena to move past.
“Go,” he said.
She didn’t hesitate.
Elena pushed forward, staying close to the wall as she moved past them. Her heart was racing so fast it was difficult to think clearly, but she didn’t look back. She focused on the passage ahead, on the faint light that marked the exit, and kept moving.
Behind her, there was another struggle, the sound of movement and impact, but she didn’t stop to understand it.
A second later, Adrian caught up to her.
“Keep going,” he said.
She nodded, though she wasn’t sure he saw it, and matched his pace.
The passage widened slightly as they moved forward, the air shifting as they got closer to the exit. Elena’s breathing was uneven, her chest tight, but she forced herself to keep moving.
Adrian reached the door first and pushed it open.
Cool air rushed in immediately.
Elena stepped outside without slowing, the sudden openness disorienting after the confined space. The back of the estate was darker than the front, with fewer lights and more shadow, making it harder to see but easier to move unnoticed.
“Where are we?” she asked.
“The service side,” Adrian replied, scanning the area quickly.
Elena followed his gaze. The grounds stretched outward, quiet but no longer reassuring. Everything felt exposed.
“Are they still behind us?” she asked.
“Yes.”
The answer came without hesitation.
“Then we need to move,” she said.
“We are.”
They moved quickly across the open space, keeping close to the wall of the building. Elena’s legs felt heavier now, her body reacting to the adrenaline, but she kept pace with him.
A sound behind them confirmed what she already knew.
They were not far behind.
Elena didn’t turn this time.
“How far?” she asked.
“Not far.”
She let out a breath that didn’t help much.
They reached the edge of the property where another car was parked, partially hidden in shadow. Adrian moved ahead and unlocked it quickly.
“Get in,” he said.
Elena opened the door and got inside, her hands still slightly unsteady as she reached for the seatbelt. Adrian slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine almost immediately.
For a brief moment, everything was quiet again.
Then the car moved.
Elena leaned back, her chest rising and falling as she tried to steady her breathing. The tension hadn’t left her body, but it had shifted into something more focused.
“They were already inside,” she said.
“Yes.”
“That wasn’t random.”
“No.”
She turned slightly toward him. “They knew where we were going.”
“Yes.”
Her stomach tightened. “So they know the house.”
“They’ve been studying it.”
Elena absorbed that in silence for a moment.
“That means they knew about me too,” she said.
“Yes.”
The certainty in his voice made it harder to ignore.
“And you still didn’t think I needed to know everything?” she asked.
“I told you what mattered.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
“It is right now.”
Elena looked away, her frustration still there but quieter.
The road ahead stretched into darkness, the distant lights of the city barely visible. It looked the same as before, but it didn’t feel the same.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
“Somewhere they won’t expect.”
“That doesn’t sound permanent.”
“It isn’t.”
She nodded faintly. “So we keep moving.”
“For now.”
Elena leaned her head back slightly, staring ahead.
“This isn’t something I can walk away from, is it?”
“No.”
The answer came without hesitation.
“And whatever I signed is the reason they’re coming after me.”
“Yes.”
She turned her head slightly, studying him more carefully.
“And you’re still not going to tell me what it is.”
Adrian didn’t respond.
That silence was enough.
Elena looked back at the road, her thoughts settling into something clearer.
“They’re not going to stop,” she said.
“No.”
“So this just keeps going.”
“Yes.”
She sat quietly for a moment, letting that settle.
Then she asked, “What happens if they catch us?”
Adrian didn’t answer immediately. When he did, his voice was steady.
“They won’t.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“It’s the only answer you’re getting.”
Elena watched him for a moment longer, then looked away again.
The car continued forward, the distance between them and the estate increasing.
But the feeling didn’t go with it.
If anything, it grew sharper.
Elena glanced into the side mirror without thinking.
Headlights.
Far at first.
Then closer.
“Adrian,” she said quietly.
He checked the rearview mirror.
His expression didn’t change, but his grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly.
“They found us already?” she asked.
“Yes.”
The car behind them didn’t slow.
It stayed at a distance.
Following.
Elena’s pulse began to rise again.
“Tell me that’s not them.”
Adrian didn’t look away from the mirror.
“It is.”
The distance between the cars began to close.
Elena’s hands tightened in her lap. “What do we do?”
Adrian’s voice remained calm.
“We don’t let them catch up.”
He pressed harder on the accelerator.
The car surged forward.
The road ahead opened, but it didn’t feel like freedom.
Elena glanced back once more.
The headlights were still there.
Closer now.
And gaining.
