Chapter Five

1068 Words
Elena stepped back into the room without thinking, her hand still gripping the edge of the door as if letting go would somehow make what she had just seen more real. Adrian noticed the shift in her immediately. “What is it?” he asked. “There’s someone here,” she said. Her voice was steady, but it took effort to keep it that way. His expression didn’t change, but something in his posture sharpened. “Where?” She turned slightly, gesturing toward the hallway. “That door down the corridor. It wasn’t open before.” Adrian moved past her without hesitation, his focus already shifting outward. “Stay here,” he said. “I’m not staying here alone,” Elena replied, the words coming faster this time. He didn’t argue. Instead, he adjusted his pace, and she followed him into the hallway. The air felt different now. The quiet from earlier had changed. It was no longer still in a controlled way. It felt disturbed, like something had moved through it and left something behind. Adrian slowed as they approached the door. Elena stayed close behind him. “Do you hear that?” she asked quietly. “Yes.” It was faint, but it was there. A soft movement, deliberate, controlled. Not the kind of sound someone made by accident. Adrian stopped just before the door and listened for a moment. Then he pushed it open. The room inside was empty. Elena frowned immediately. “That doesn’t make sense.” Adrian stepped in, his eyes scanning the space quickly. Nothing appeared out of place. The furniture was undisturbed. The air was still. But something was wrong. “They were here,” he said. Her chest tightened. “Were?” “Yes.” Before she could ask anything else, a sharp sound echoed from somewhere deeper in the house. A door closing. Not softly. Not by accident. Elena felt her heartbeat quicken. “That didn’t come from this room.” “I know.” Another sound followed, closer this time. Movement, no longer careful enough to be hidden. Adrian turned toward her. “We’re leaving.” “What’s happening?” she asked. “They found us faster than I expected.” Her stomach dropped. “You said we had time.” “I said I would handle it.” “That’s not the same thing.” “No,” he said, already moving, “it’s better.” He reached for her wrist and pulled her with him. “Wait,” she said, trying to keep up. “Where are we going?” “Out.” They moved quickly through the hallway, the quiet from earlier now completely gone. It had been replaced with something alive, something closing in. “What do they want?” she asked. “What you signed,” he replied. Her pulse spiked. “Which is what?” He didn’t answer. A loud crash echoed behind them, followed by the unmistakable sound of something breaking. Elena flinched. “They’re inside?” “Yes.” “How?” “They stopped waiting.” The words sent a chill through her. They turned a corner sharply, moving deeper into the house. The lights seemed dimmer now, or maybe it just felt that way. Another sound followed. Footsteps. Closer. Elena’s breathing became uneven. “They’re right behind us.” “I know.” Adrian didn’t slow. They reached the end of the corridor, and he pushed open a narrow door hidden against the wall. “Inside,” he said. Elena stepped through without hesitation, the air immediately cooler in the tight, dim passage beyond. “Where does this go?” she asked. “Out.” The door shut behind them, but it didn’t block the sounds completely. Voices echoed faintly now. Low. Controlled. Too close. Elena’s chest tightened. “They’re following us.” “Yes.” They moved forward quickly, the narrow passage forcing her closer to him. The walls felt too close, the air heavier with each step. “What did I sign?” she asked again, her voice quieter now. Adrian didn’t answer immediately. Then he said, “Something they’re willing to kill for.” The words settled heavily between them. Elena felt something shift inside her, not fear exactly, but something close to it. Before she could respond, a sound came from ahead. Not behind them. Ahead. She stopped. “That didn’t come from behind us.” Adrian stopped too. “I know.” Her stomach tightened. “So they’re in front of us too?” “Yes.” “That’s not possible.” “It is.” Elena forced herself to keep moving, even though every instinct told her to stop. The passage widened slightly ahead, and faint light spilled into the space. Shapes began to form. Two figures stood at the far end. Waiting. Elena slowed despite herself. “They’re blocking the exit.” “Yes.” Her voice dropped. “Then what do we do?” Adrian didn’t hesitate. “We keep moving.” “They have us trapped,” she said. “Only if we stop.” They moved forward together, slower now, more controlled. The men ahead didn’t move right away. They stood where they were, watching. Elena felt her heartbeat climb higher with each step. “This isn’t random,” she said quietly. “No,” Adrian replied. The distance between them closed gradually. One of the men shifted slightly, adjusting his stance. Elena’s chest tightened. “For what?” she asked. Adrian didn’t look away from them. “For us to get closer.” Her throat went dry. “Then what do we do?” “We don’t give them what they want.” They moved forward again. One step. Then another. The space between them shrank. The tension in the air became almost physical. Elena could hear her own breathing now. The man on the left reached slowly into his jacket. Everything inside her stilled. “Adrian,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. He didn’t stop moving. “Stay behind me.” The man’s hand came back out. Holding a gun. Elena’s breath caught. Time seemed to slow. The second man shifted slightly, blocking more of the exit. Adrian stepped forward again, positioning himself fully between her and them. The gun lifted. Elena didn’t move. Didn’t think. Didn’t breathe. And then The man aimed.
