A Stranger's Kindness
Iris stood the counter, quietly arranging the coffee supplies with good care. She adjusted the neatly packed paper cup, refilled the sugar jars, and she wipe the table, her hand moving with the ease of routine.
Her eyes wandered to the large window facing across the street.
outside the sky was blue and calm.
inside, the coffee shop hummed with a gentle life. customer chatted quietly as they were enjoying the warm drinks, the aroma of espresso and baked goods swirling in the air like a warm blanket.
Iris love it this way, peaceful and beautiful away from the harshness of this world.
The outside world was loud and cruel. and deep within her heart, she could only pretend that everything was okay...... even when it's not.
She moved to the coffee machine, gently wiping it before switching it on. A minute later, she made herself a small cup of coffee adding a little sugar, just the way she liked it.
she slowly sip her coffee as she sat at the corner table to enjoy her quite break.
Just then her phone buzzed on the table beside her.
She picked it up.
A message from the hospital.
"Reminder: Your sister's medication is now overdue"
Iris stared at the message, her chest tightening.
Her finger trembled slightly as she put her phone down and sighed.
Her thought were interrupted by the sound of bell above the entrance door. She looked up and saw a tall, woman step into the cafè. She was dressed in a sleek black blazer and a well tailored trousers, her heels clicking against the floor. Though likely in her forties, she still carried herself with timeless grace.
"Hello," the woman said with a gentle tone. I'd like to have a cup of latte, please."
"Yes, ma'am," Iris said, said quickly got to work, her hands moving swiftly to prepare the latte. As she steamed the milk, she couldn't help but glance at the woman again.
There was something captivating about her something commanding yet kind.
The woman caught her staring. With playful smile, she looked at her and asked, " Am I really that beautiful?"
Startled, iris blushed and quickly bowed her head "I.....I'm sorry ma'am," she starmmed.
"I didn't mean to stare."
The woman chuckled gently. "It's all right dear. What's your name?"
"I'm Iris ma'am," she replied nervously, bowing slightly again.
"A beautiful name for a beautiful girl," the woman said accepting her latte as Iris handed it over. She took a sip and nodded approvingly. "So Iris are you a graduate?"
Iris hesitated. Her finger tightened around the counter "No, ma'am," she said softly. "I dropped out.
"Why, my dear?" The woman asked, with curiosity.
Iris looked down, her voice soft "My little sister is sick and need medical treatment. I couldn't afford my school fees anymore. So I had to start working.
The woman was quite for a minute, then she looked at her carefully. Then she reached out into her purse.
"How much is the coffee?" She asked calmly.
"It's 5 dollars, ma'am," Iris replied.
The woman open her purse and bring out a crisp stack of bills and handed them to Iris.
Iris's eyes widened in disbelief. Ma'am n-no I can't take this," she said, her voice shaking.
She stepped back and dropped to her knees, holding the money with trembling hands. "Please, ma'am, this is too much... I can't accept it."
The woman walked around the counter and gently helped iris on her feet.
"Dear," she said softly "I gave you this money, take it it's rare these days to find girls who are so polite, respectful, and hardworking.
Iris's tears flow freely. She clutched the money to her chest and bowed deeply.
"Thank you... thank you so much ma'am," she whispered "I don't know how to repay you."
"You don't have to dear," the woman said with a gentle smile on her face" Just take care of your sister and yourself okay."
"I will ma'am, I promise."
She turned and walked to the door, outside, a sleek black BMW was parked by the curb. A driver in suit stepped out to opened the door for her.
Iris stood by the window, holding the money tight in her hand. She watched as the car drove away.
She didn't know who this woman was she didn't even know her name
But in that moment, iris felt something she hasn't felt for a long time.
Hope.
The cafè had long grown quiet.
The last customer left an hours ago, Iris finally finished cleaning the cafè. The light were off, she carefully arrange the chair, and the coffee machine was quite.
She took off her apron and hung it on the hook behind the door. Her body ached from standing all day, and her hands were still sore from cleaning the tables and carrying trays.
She locked the door and stepped outside
The night was was cool, brushing against her skin gently.
The street were quite now, with only a few cars passing by and the sound of wind blowing through the trees.
Clutching her bag close, she walked to the bus stop. The weight of the cash in her bag pressing firmly against her chest like a second heartbeat. A complete strangers had given her so much money no questions asked, no promises made.
It's felt like a dream.
Iris sat down quietly on the bus, her head resting against the window, as she stared out into the city lights blurring past. Her mind was with her sister, Mira, who was lying in a hospital bed for 7 months now. Iris had done everything she could to cover up the hospital bills but it's was never enough.
By the time iris got the bus and climbed the stairs to her apartment, it was almost ten at night. She lived in a small, self-contained room. The neighborhood was quite the kind of quiet that felt both safe and lonely.
She unlock the door and went inside. The apartment was quite she dropped her bag table and turn on the light.
Everything looked the same old furniture, faded curtain and an old empty fridge.
She sat at the small table and took out the envelope from her bag. She opened it carefully, one by one, she counted the bills, laying them on the table.
Her hand was shaking.
It's was enough.
Maybe not everything, but it's enough to pay for the hospital bills. Enough to cover Mira's Medicine. Enough to buy a little more time. She wouldn't have to lie she would pay "soon" while she had nothing.
She reached for her phone, and saw another message.
"Reminder: Mira's medication is now overdue. Please contact the billing office immediately."
Her chest ached with deep breath, she dialed the number.
"Hello?" She said when someone answered.
"This is Iris sliverfall. My sister Mira is a patient at your hospital I want to make a payment tonight."
She followed the doctor's instruction, transfer the money, and got a message saying the payment was successful.
She put down her phone and leaned back in her chair.
Mira would get her medicine tomorrow.
She looked up at the ceiling, her eyes filled with tears. She had been holding in so much pain, fear and worry. Slow, quiet drops that slid down her cheek and fell onto her lap.
She didn't know who that woman was or why she choose to help.
But because of her, her little sister had a chance.
She whispered softly "Thank you....."
"I'll find a better job," iris said quietly. "I'll keep going. I promise
She turned off the lights and crawled into her bed. Her body was exhausted, but her heart was lighter than it's had been in a long time.
For the first time she fall asleep with a soft smile on her.
