Chapter 1
"You are so going down,” I yelled, focusing on the guy. This guy had no chance against my sword skills, he was gonna die first.
I yelled in victory as he fell, blood splattering everywhere for dramatic effect.
“Are you freaking serious?" My best friend, Reagan, yelled. She takes my phone from me as I'm about to see what prize I got.
“Hey!”I say,“Give it back.”
“You've been playing this RPG game for like what? Five hours? Have you ever touched your homework?" She says, her face stern.
I look up at the ceiling,“I was gonna start after that last round.”
“Sure, and I'm gonna marry Dylan O' Brien tomorrow," she says, sarcastically, throwing my phone onto my bed. I made a grab for it, cradling it like a child.
“Are you really though?”I say back, eyes wide.
Regan rolled her eyes,“You are so full bullshit.”
“At least it'll eventually come out the other end,”I say, giving her a cheshire cat grin. She makes an ew sound before proceeding to lecture me about proper hygiene.
“But seriously, you should get your homework down? I just saw Ms. Evans leave the packhouse, and her face says she ain’t having it tomorrow," she says, sprawling across my bed.
“I'll get to it,”I say, assuring her, "Eventually.”
“I'm just gonna pretend you said you're going to start it right away," Reagan says, throwing an arm over her eyes.
“Speaking of which, have you seen my dad? He's been missing breakfast for the past two days," I ask her. Since my dad was the Beta of the Northern Pack, he's always busy, like all the time. And since Reagan was the Alpha's daughter, she knew more information than I did.
“Your dad? I think he's preparing the big meet up with the Alpha of the Northern Star Pack," she says,“My dad has always been so stressed lately. Apparently, the Alpha there is a big deal.”
“Northern Star?” I say, the name seemingly familiar. I gasp as Reagan asks what’s wrong.
“Reagan, it's the Northern Star Pack,” I repeat, waiting for recognition to pass her face.
“Well no s**t, that is their name," she says, completely calm.
“Rea, it's Northern. Star.” I say, emphasizing the words. Her eyes are confused before her face pales.
“Lycan wolves,” We both say at the same time.
“s**t," she curses.
“What do you think they want with us?" I say, slightly terrified.
“I'm sure it's another rogue problem or maybe some new attack tactics?" she suggests, uncertainty in her voice.
“When was the last time the Northern Star Pack had a meeting with another pack?”I say, my stomach turning.
Regan smiles but it doesn't reach her eyes, "I'm sure it’ll be fine. But what about you? Are you ready for your shift tomorrow?”
I take notice of her change of topic and go along with it. Who wants to talk about a dangerous pack that could kill us all? It was a total conversation killer.
“I'm not that excited honestly, I'm more nervous. What if I can't shift?”I say, sighing.
Reagan pats me on my shoulder,“Don't worry. It's a full moon out anyways, it'll help you shift even if you feel scared.”
“You're probably right, I'm probably overthinking as per usual,” I say.
“Girls! Dinner!”Mom yells from the stairs, "It's your favorites.”
I look at Reagan and before we knew it, we were pushing each other through the doorway.“Let me go first," she says in her Alpha tone, and I curse her. My body automatically freezing, allowing her to slip by with ease. Since she was also the eldest child, she was destined to become the next Alpha of the Northern Pack.
By the time I got down to the dining room, half of the food was gone. I glare at Reagan, whose plate was filled to the brim. My mom also had a guilty smile on, as she handed me an empty plate.
I peeled some pasta, bread, broccoli, and potatoes on my plate. “Thanks, Mom,”I say, mouth full of food. Reagan thanked her as well.
“So how are you, Reagan? This is the first time I saw you in a week,”Mom says, wiping her mouth.
“I'm good. I’ve been busy trying to do some Alpha training, and catching up on missing homework,” she says easily, “Dad has been giving me lots of work to do.”
“Well, you are our next Alpha,”Mom says, a proud smile on her face.
“I hope I can keep up with my Dad's success,” Reagan says, serious.
“You're already making a change,”I say, reassuring her.
“Weren't you the one to install that new water system at the School? More kids are able to drink purified water instead of nasty water,”Mom says.
Reagan blushes, “Yeah, well. It wasn't just me.”
A loud door opening makes the three of us go on high alert. That is until a familiar smell wafts into the dining room.
“Dad?” I say.
“And Alpha,” Alpha North says, giving me a friendly wave.
“Alpha,” my Mom and I bow to him.
“Where's Meredith?” Mom asks, casually.
“My mate wanted to take care of Damien at home. He's been acting up since it's teething years,” Alpha North says.
“Dad, what's up?” Reagan says, going over to kiss her Dad on the cheek.
“Beta and I had to discuss some things. I'm sorry to keep him for so long,” he says, specifically addressing my mom.
“It's an honor to discuss important matters with you, Alpha,” my Dad says, slightly bowing.
Alpha gives him a slight smile. “Reagan,” he addresses her, “May I speak with You?”
Reagan nods, curious and follows into the living room.
“So, dad, do you want some food?” I offer, handing him a plate.
He gives me a kid like smile, “Who do you think you're asking?” He grabs the plate with both hands and sits down next to my mom.
Mom gives him a sweet smile and I almost have to look away. My parents were so cute. They acted like they were still in high school even though both were in their 40s.
“How was your talk with Alpha North?” Mom asks.
He glances at me quickly, before answering, “We talked about new tactics. And how to deal with some rogues.”
“Not too hard on them, were you, sweetie?” Mom says, leaning toward my Dad. I had a gut feeling what was gonna happen.
Dad leaned forward and gave her a quick kiss, while I pretended the potatoes were really interesting.
“No! Absolutely Not!” I hear Reagan yell before I hear a door slam. Alpha North comes back into the dining room, his face filled with irritation. He didn't like when anybody said no, even if it's from his own kin. It was part of an Alpha's uncontrollable anger syndrome.
“She didn't like the prospect of it all,” Alpha North says, taking a seat.
“I can delay the meeting,” offered my Dad. I looked between them, confused. I was going to ask but the scary look on Alpha's face advised me not to.
Mom ushered me out of the room, leaving the men to talk. I was so curious about what they were talking about. “Mom, what's going on?” I say as she shut the door to her room, the one she shared with my Dad.
“I don't know, Lana," Mom says, sitting on the bed calmly.
“What about Reagan? I ask,“Who's gonna get her?”
“In times like this, it's better to let her run off her anger," Mom advises.
“Mom, it's close tonight. Anything can be out there, and my best friend is out there,” I say, exasperatedly, “You don't expect to just say here and sit, do you?”
“You haven't shifted, technically you're still human,” Mom says, matter of factly.
“When has that ever stopped me?” I say, a smirk sliding on my face.
Mom signs, “You got this rebellious side from me, didn't you?”
I shrug, knowing what she would say next.
“Go. Don't die, okay?”
I give Mom a smile,“Gotcha.”
I head toward the window and put my foot on the edge. Giving my Mom one last smile, I threw myself out the window.
