Freya’s Pov
The walk went on much longer than I thought.
We walked in the forest for hours. We talked about big things and small things. Dane told me about the years I was away. He said he trained hard as Alpha so he would not miss me too much. He said no to every girl his dad tried to match him with. He said he knew, even before the mate bond, that no one else would feel right.
I told him about living in the city. About feeling alone with humans who did not know about wolves. About the empty place inside me all the time, like I lost something important.
“It was you,” I said. “That empty place was missing you. I just didn’t know.”
He held my hand tighter.
When we came back to the packhouse, the sun was going down. The smell of Catherine’s good cooking was everywhere.
Dinner was warm
