prologue
"I always wondered what it would be like to die. The feeling of your body letting go and just calming down." The words slipped from his mouth before his blue eyes lifted to the room. Lounging on a leather cushioned couch, He found his gaze looking at the maroon walls and ornamental photographs of his therapist's office. It wasn't long before he looked at the female who seemed to gawk at him. "Why do you wonder this?" Her voice was calm, though her facial features showed shock and concern. Sitting up now, he looked at his hands. His fingers were intertwined, and his thumbs made circles around each other. He was thinking of a way to answer her question. The silence lasted a moment before she stood and moved to sit at his right. The closeness caused him to become uneasy, and he scooted to the arm of the couch. "I-" He broke off. How was he supposed to tell her that he felt the world was falling apart around him? That his very existence was a never-ending cycle of depression and self-hate. Looking up at her now, he shook his head. No one would understand.
"I can't help you if you don't tell me."
"Then you can't help me." He spoke now as he stood and moved to the door. She watched him leave, though. Her eyes of green upon his body like a predator on prey. Lifting his hand to the knob, he turned it. Though as he went to open the door, he found he couldn't move it. Her hand touched the center of the door. Her body was behind him, and her breath was like hot waves against his neck. "I want to help you." Her voice was filled with musk. Her usual light, cheerful tone faded behind a feral, primal one. Who was this woman?
Letting go of the handle, he allowed her to close the door. Quickly, he turned around. Something within his core screamed at him. Like a beast wanting to be loose, his eyes became a dazzling blue as he looked at her face. The one thing he noticed was her eyes. Her usual forest green gaze had lightened to a beautiful, exotic amber. Deeply, she growled at him, but when his eyes did not lower, she enveloped him. Her arms were on both sides of his head. "What are you?" Her voice came out as more growl than English. Nasal passages flared as she took in his scent. Honeysuckle with a trace of morning dew. Her eyes closed before a tight sensation came to her neck.
Eyes, now wide, took in the sight of stretched-out hands. Claws tipped each digit as they dug into her skin. A feral growl ripped from his throat as he pushed her toward the couch. "You're choking me." Her voice was cut off as he squeezed. His teeth, or his canines, began to sharpen and grow longer. The inner beast was testing the metal of this female. The growling did not stop as blood trailed down her neck and smeared against his fingertips. Her eyes rolled back, and her body grew limp in his hands. He didn't let go till her lips turned blue from suffocation. This female was not worthy. "I'm an Alpha!" He deeply growled as he looked down at her lifeless body.
