Trey and I have been spending quite a bit of time in our home town, every time we tried to leave something happened and we ended up staying another night. There was just something about this place, I didn't want to leave, I hadn't called it home in nine years but it still felt like I belonged here, my history was here. I could tell Trey didn't want to leave either, it was hard for him, he knew parts of Shadeau that I never got to see growing up. As the people of Shadeau gathered in the square to celebrate the Union festival, Trey and I began our long journey to the capital. Trey and I decided to save some time, while the people were distracted, and cut through the city rather then travel around it.
We weaved in and out of allies trying to avoid the eyes of the people, and not draw attention to ourselves. The city had more Welkin's and Merrow's than usual, Merrow's were never really a problem, when it came to hunting me specifically, but their hatred for Welkin's made me a target, due to the fact that my Welkin side was the one we chose to leave exposed. Not far off from where we were hiding was an inn, just past the inn was the forest. As we walked towards the inn I noticed some Welkin soldiers near by eyeing us, I reached out and grabbed Trey's arm giving it a hard squeeze,
"I saw them" Trey whispered to me, one of the Welkin's leaned in and whispered to his companions, his eyes never leaving me. I resisted the urge to quicken my pace as the Welkin's approached, we were only a few feet from the inn when they surrounded us.
"Hay, where are you two off to?" asked one of the soldiers, I kept my head down as Trey spoke to them.
"No where important, just tow travelers making our way through" Trey said calmly
"You don't want to stay for the Union festival?" questioned another soldier
"No, too many people, it's not really our thing." I inched closer to Trey as one of the soldiers moved closer to me trying to get a good look at my face. I could see the frustration on his face when I moved back and ducked my head lower.
"Now my question is what's under that hood?" he said
"An ugly scar, she was caught in a fire as a child, burned half her head, the hair wont grow back." Trey responded, the Welkin didn't seem to buy it.
"You know we're looking for a half Welkin, half Merrow girl, maybe you're her" said the soldier
"She's not" Trey said
"Getting a little defensive, are we? Maybe we should take a look just to be sure." The leader of the group reached for my hood, as he pulled it back I lifted my foot and kicked him in the gut. He stumbled backwards clutching his stomach,
"You shouldn't have done that" said one of his companions, he came at me but I jumped and kicked him in the head. From the corner of my eye I could see Trey getting punched in the face, just as I was about to help the Welkin was tackled to the ground by a Merrow, the same Merrow that saw me. He grabbed the Welkins head and smashed it into the ground knocking him out. Trey was already fighting another Welkin, but this time he seemed to be winning. There were at least ten Welkin, and nine of them were coming at us full force. We punched, kicked and tackled, the Merrow drew his sword and I my knives, the soldiers also drew their weapons. It would seem we were out numbered, and all hope was lost, it was time I was going to get caught. There was no way the three of us were going to beat the nine of them. Then out of no where Octavius came swooping in, he landed on his feed between us and the other Welkin soldiers.
"What's going on here?" he asked
"We were just trying to see if she was the hybrid" said one of the soldiers. Octavius turned his head and looked me in the eye, he seemed to be considering what the other man said for a moment.
"She's not the hybrid" he stated,
"How would you know?"
"Because look at her, shes too small and weak looking to be the Hybrid. Besides, she saved me last helped me last night, no one on the run would help someone who was huntung them unless they were an idiot." Every word out of his mouth was like a slap in the face, I was not weak, I was small, but no weak, or an i***t. The other Welkin soldiers looked at me and then back to Octavius, they didn't look too sure, but they took him at his word,
"Alright Oct, if you say so, but I'll be watching you little girl." said the lead soldier pointing at me, Trey stepped between me and the soldier, blocking me from his view.
"Come on Kal, let's get out of here." he said grabbing my shoulders and guiding me back towards the woods.
We picked up our bags and continued on, but this time we had two tag along's. Once we were a safe distance from the city and the soldiers, and we were sure that they didn't follow us Trey turned to the two men,
"Why are you following us?" Trey asked them
"I had a debt to pay" Octavius said simply while the Merrow remained quiet, his eyes never leaving me for a second. Trey stared at him expectantly, but when he still did not respond he got angry,
"Come on Kal" Trey began marching off.
"Wait" yelled the Merrow, "where are you headed?" Trey sighed and took a minute to think,
"North, to Elysium" he said
"Then you are you walking South?" question Octavius eyeing us suspiciously
"We need to go to The Golden city first, then we are headed to Elysium" I said
"So you're headed to the capital." the Merrow said as more of a statment then a question, I nodded my head.
"What a coincidence I am also headed to the capital" Octavius said
"As am I" said the Merrow.
"Well safe travels to you both" Trey said turning to leave once again
"How about we travel together?" suggested the Merrow, Trye let out another long sigh, I could tell he was getting tired of this, and just wanted us to be on our way.
"No thank you, we prefer to travel alone." he said as politely was he could.
"Well we're all headed in the same direction anyways so...." the Merrow insisted, I leaned in close to Trey,
"I don't think he's going to take no for an answer" I said, "Just let them come for now and when they fall asleep tonight we'll make our escape."
"Fine" Trey whispered back to me, he plastered a fake smile on his face and looked at the Merrow and the Welkin.
"The more the merrier."
