CHAPTER 1 FIRST WORLD - WAKE UP
Opening her eyes to a blank ceiling, Catherine's last memory was the moment right before she was hit by a car.
Looking around the unfamiliar room and then down at her completely intact body, she frowned. "Shouldn’t I be in the hospital? How did I end up in someone else’s room?" she wondered.
“Ding! System binding in progress... Binding successful! Hello! I’m the Cannon Fodder Rescue System. You can call me 030.”
“030? Where is this place?”
“This is a n*********d titled ‘The CEO Fell in Love with Me.’ Congratulations! You’ve been selected as a mission executor. Your main task is to save cannon fodder characters from dying. But before the mission begins, we always respect the host’s decision. If you wish to quit, we can return you to your original place.”
“Am I still alive?”
“Unfortunately, you’re dead. If you choose to go back, it will be to the place where the dead belong.”
“How do you choose your missionaries?”
“All mission executors are selected after death—it’s a sort of job. After successfully completing the mission in this world, you’ll move on to the next one. So, host, what’s your answer?”
“Yes”
“No”
Without hesitation, Catherine selected “Yes.” Just kidding, she thought. If I have to start from scratch in the world of the undead, I might as well do these quests and enjoy traveling through worlds.
“Congratulations, host! Welcome to this world. Because you’re not the main protagonist, information is limited. Your identity here is Catherine Taylor, the youngest daughter of the prestigious Taylor family, founders of the QR Group in City A. In the original storyline, your parents died young in a plane crash. Your older siblings are too busy to care for you, and the outside world believes your family doesn’t love you—including yourself. You were often bullied at school but kept it all to yourself to avoid troubling your siblings. Later, you accidentally offended the male lead and died in a staged car accident. Since it was ruled an accident, and the QR Group was under pressure from the male lead’s company, your funeral was done quietly and without investigation.”
Catherine was speechless. Rich young lady or not, if someone bullies you, you hit back! In her previous life, she had been crowned Best Actress multiple times. Anyone who had tried to bring her down had eventually paid the price. She had only recently retired to enjoy life when she got hit by a runaway car after buying a cup of coffee. Just thinking about it made her want to scream and laugh at the same time.
“Tell me about the family here.”
“Your eldest brother, Ethan Taylor, is the current CEO of QR Group—cold, serious, and a workaholic. Your second brother, Noah Taylor, is one of the top doctors in the medical field. Your elder sister, Victoria Taylor, is a famous actress and the only one who shows you some care at home. However, because everyone is so busy—and because you were always so considerate—you never told them about your problems. Your parents passed away when you were very young, so now only the four of you remain.”
Catherine nodded. Okay, got the gist. “So our family and the male lead are enemies?”
“Yes. Your eldest brother and the male lead are love rivals. That’s why the male lead targeted your family and crushed QR Group in the original plot.”
So dramatic, Catherine thought. This task is too easy. All I need to do is act my way into getting their attention? Please, I was born for this. I didn’t go from unknown extra to film queen for nothing.
Standing in front of a mirror, she admired the familiar face. It was still stunning. Relieved, she smiled. Good, if I had transmigrated into someone ugly, I’d have asked 030 to just skip this world and take me to the next.
Downstairs, her eldest brother was already seated at the table.
“Good morning, big brother.”
Ethan looked up and frowned slightly. “Cate, what took you so long? It’s already nine.”
“I didn’t sleep well last night, so I slept in.”
“What’s keeping you from sleeping? Should I have your second brother check on you?” Though his tone was cold, a flicker of concern flashed in his eyes.
Catherine, instantly switching to Queen-Level Acting, gave a weak smile. “It’s nothing. I just couldn’t sleep. Don’t worry, big brother.”
Ethan narrowed his eyes. Sensing something was off, he made a mental note to have his secretary check in on her later.
After breakfast, he left for the office.
Staring at the now-empty dining room, Catherine muttered, “030, my big brother doesn’t seem as indifferent as the original story made him out to be.”
“That’s right, Cate. Actually, everyone in the family cares about the original host. She was just too understanding and never spoke up.”
She's such a little fool, huh? Catherine said with a sigh. If no one ever says anything, how is anyone supposed to know? Well, I’m here now, and I’m definitely not the type to suffer in silence.
‘Ding.’ A message popped up on her phone. She glanced at the sender. “Elena?”
"That’s your only friend. She’s the one who used to stand up for you when others bullied you. Because of her influential family, most people didn’t dare do more than sneer at you when she wasn’t around.”
“Hello, Elena.”
“Cate! Are you ready? I’m outside your house!”
“Ready for what?”
“To go watch the race, duh! You promised you’d come with me. Don’t tell me you forgot?” Elena sounded suspicious.
“Of course not! I’m just asking what else I should bring. Isn’t it easiest to just walk out the door? Do I need to pack my face or something?” Catherine replied lazily.
On the other end of the phone, Elena didn’t know how to respond. But truth be told, Catherine’s looks were undeniable. At school, she was a goddess. If not for her aloof personality, she’d have boys lining up with confessions—and maybe even girls, too.
After telling the housekeeper, Catherine headed out. Sure enough, Elena was waiting by a flashy red sports car.
“Hurry up, get in!”
Once in the car, Catherine listened to Elena chatter non-stop.
“030,” she groaned internally, “why didn’t you tell me she’s a chatterbox?” From racing talk to food plans, Catherine seriously considered stuffing something in her friend’s mouth.
Finally, the car stopped. Catherine got out first and tugged Elena’s arm. “Come on, if you keep talking, you’ll miss your god!”
Elena immediately perked up and dragged Catherine into the crowd.
“We’re not going to a box seat?” Catherine asked, scanning the noisy surroundings. She didn’t really like crowds, but Elena looked so excited that she let it go.
“How can a box compare to the front row? I want to get close to my man-god! Look, he’s right there!”
Catherine followed her gaze. The man was handsome enough, but she was more curious about his driving skills.
“Cate,” 030 chimed in, “that’s the male third lead. Later in the story, the male lead will have someone break his hand to stop him from taking the heroine away.”
What the hell? Catherine’s mouth twitched. This is the male lead? Sounds more like a villain! Who writes their protagonists this vicious?
