CHAPTER 1
She inhaled a refreshing amount of air and slowly let them out. Her palm reached for her chest once again to feel her heart beat, hoping the breathing exercise had calmed her down and eased her stress and anxiety. But it seemed to have worsened her palpitations. Her heart was still drumming so fast and each time she took in air it only aggravated her condition.
She did not give up after all, exercise was one of the best ways to release tension from anxiety. She kept moving, her hair bouncing in motion as her heels hit the ground repeatedly. She tried to increase her pace because she was almost late for the meeting she had with her boss and she dared not be late as her boss was the no-nonsense type of boss. A perfectionist with no room for error and that made her wonder why he had chosen to see her first thing in the morning.
"Get yourself together, Elena," she muttered under her breath as she tried to give herself a pep talk as she arrived at the door bearing the CEO's nameplate. She gave a light knock at the door twice before getting a response from a familiar deep voice giving the instruction, "Come in."
She obliged the order, opened the door carefully and stepped inside, closing the door behind her gently. Elena stood firmly at the door, trying to study the way she did with her patients. He had an unreadable expression, and that made it difficult for her to judge if she should relax or stay alert.
"Good morning, Professor Dennis." She greeted him with a curt now of her head. "You're late," he said without looking up. Elena felt like disappearing at the release of that statement, because it just made her all the more anxious. The man raised his eyebrows slightly, observing her for a moment before returning his attention to the files in front of him. "Have a seat, doctor Davis." Elena nodded and obliged, taking a seat in front of the desk.
"Are you willing to give your all for this hospital?" he asked after a while of silence. "Yes, sir..." she replied. She found his question rather weird given the fact that her job requires giving her best for the hospital. The professor remained silent once more, and Elena thought about when he would finally speak again.
"Good." He finally conversed, "I have a proposition for you," he continued. She was a bit confused at the direct offer from the head office.
"What kind of proposal, sir?" she asked curiously. Dennis dropped the papers, replacing them with a mug of coffee. He took a sip before finally fixing his gaze at her.
"Doctor Davis," he began, and that was the moment that had been haunting her, and yet she had been waiting for. "I am not going to waste any time here," he said with a tone that sent shivers down her spine. "We have received a very special case," he added.
Elena's mind had a series of questions she wanted to ask. "Special case?" she asked. He replied with a nod as he picked up the documents on his table and handed them over to her to take a look at. "These are scan results," she said after a short while of studying the contents. "Yes, they're that of your patient, one you're yet to meet." he concluded.
Elena sat in utter confusion, but didn't want to raise suspicion about her ignorance. Rather, she waited for him to explain everything to her.
"You see, he is one of our most eminent patients. Of course, all patients are treated equally, as long as the needed conditions are dealt with, but I am being specific about his social role." Dennis voiced, finally bringing her out of the depth of ignorance.
"Ohh, I see..." She drew her words slightly, watching him for more explanation.
"He was admitted to this hospital for five months, with a lot of broken bones and head injury, and only got a little bit better only a month ago," the professor continued.
"Thankfully, we discovered his ability was still intact after the car accident. Regardless, he went through special therapy and treatment for three weeks following his recovery. It is just quite unfortunate that he still is unable to move around on his own." He paused, and the silence seemed unending. "And now, he has been diagnosed with a severe case of migraine, and a few other issues associated with an unstable state of mind," he finished.
Her eyes looked to the file, and then back to him, unable to digest what she had just heard. He was asking her to treat a patient with several depleting problems, someone she wasn't even familiar with.
She opened her mouth, and her lips pressed tightly together. It was impossible to deny the request, despite the overwhelming urge to do so. She knew as a doctor, it was necessary for her to do what was best for her patients. "So, you want me to be in charge of him?" she questioned softly, as she clutched the paper in her palms.
"Exactly," Dennis confirmed, and added immediately. "But there is more to that. I wouldn't call you here just to let you know you have a new patient," he stated, trying to observe her for any reaction.
His statement made her more anxious as she leaned against the edge of her seat. "There is more?"
He sighed deeply, and a ghostly smile surprising Elena curved his lips. It was a rare sight to behold, as it made her more curious to know what it was that bad the professor was so amused.
"He and his family requested a rare and special service, and would be paying the hospital a fortune," he said.
Her brows furrowed slightly. He was back to the word 'special' once again. "A special service?" she asked, and he nodded firmly.
"A personal doctor." he added.
"A personal doctor?" she asked, her eyes widening by the second as she tried to get the meaning behind the professor's word. "Like a Nanny...?" she added, still not fully understanding what it meant.
"Well, something similar, but more advanced. You will be saving him from self-destruction," he explained, remaining professional.
"How does that work?" Elena inquired, trying to understand the idea.
