Chapter 5 – Hunted by Shadows

712 Words
The sun had barely crested the horizon when Aria slipped out of the safe house Ronan had brought her to the night before. Her feet moved by instinct, not intention—drawn by the forest’s quiet hush and the illusion of solitude. She needed space to think, to breathe. To process the chaos that had uprooted her life. Her skin still ached from the silver chains. Her ears still rang with the words Kael had spat at her. Rejected. Unworthy. Unclaimed. Yet somehow, Ronan had looked at her differently. He hadn’t flinched at her brokenness. He hadn’t treated her like trash. But even with his help, she knew she wasn’t safe. And this morning, the silence felt wrong. A twig snapped behind her. She froze. Slowly, she turned her head, her senses reaching out. The trees stood still, cloaked in mist. The birds had stopped singing. Her wolf stirred anxiously, unease prickling along her spine. Another snap. Closer this time. Aria turned and ran. Branches whipped at her arms and face as she sprinted through the underbrush, breath sharp in her lungs. Whoever was out there wasn’t far behind—she could feel the chase closing in. She didn’t get far. A figure stepped from the trees ahead, cloaked in black and armed with silver-tipped darts. She skidded to a stop, heart pounding. “Well, well,” the bounty hunter sneered. The runaway omega. You’re worth a pretty coin, girl. Two more figures emerged from the shadows, surrounding her. Aria backed away slowly. “I’m not going back.” “Don’t worry,” he said, raising the weapon. “You won’t be aware when we deliver you.” The dart flew. Aria raised her arm instinctively—and something inside her snapped. A blast of heat shot down her spine, surging through her limbs. The air shimmered. The dart stopped midair, then exploded in a burst of light. The men cried out, shielding their eyes. Aria didn’t wait. She turned and ran again, adrenaline and something else—something ancient—propelling her forward. Her senses were sharp. Her feet moved faster than they ever had. The trees blurred around her as if the wind itself carried her. The forest opened onto a rocky ridge. She stumbled but caught herself, breathing hard. Then she felt it again. The hum. It wasn’t just fear anymore. It was power. Another man appeared on her left—this one wielding a silver dagger. He lunged, but Aria spun, ducked, and drove her elbow into his ribs. He grunted, dropping the weapon. She didn’t recognize herself. She’d never fought like this before. She didn’t even know she could. But the heat inside her—it was still building. Suddenly, a hand grabbed her shoulder from behind. She screamed—and energy erupted from her body, blasting the attacker several feet backward. He hit a tree and crumpled. Aria collapsed to her knees, gasping. Her skin glowed faintly, veins lit with silver. Her wolf howled inside her, not with fear, but with fury. Someone had lied to her about who she was. She wasn’t weak. She wasn’t broken. A figure burst through the trees behind her—Ronan. His golden-brown eyes locked on hers immediately, wide with alarm. “Aria!” She tried to stand but wobbled. “They found me. Bounty hunters.” He took one look at the bodies scattered behind her, still groaning, and then turned to her in awe. “You did this?” “I—I don’t know how.” Ronan knelt beside her, his hands steady as they cupped her arms. “It’s starting,” he said, almost to himself. “Your power’s awakening.” “I didn’t mean to,” she whispered. “I know.” His eyes softened. “But we need to get out of here.” Now. There will be more. He lifted her to her feet, and together, they moved quickly through the woods, heading back toward the safe house. As they moved, Aria looked down at her trembling hands. What had she become? And what else was hidden inside her? One thing was clear: the girl Kael had rejected was gone. And whoever she was becoming… they would all learn to fear her. ---
