Chapter 1: Rejected at the Ceremony
The full moon cast a haunting silver glow over the clearing, where the annual Mating Ceremony of the Night fang Pack was in full swing. The forest shimmered with fairy lights, music pulsed in the background, and wolves in human form mingled in elegant dresses and tailored suits. Laughter floated through the air, yet Aria Winters stood at the edge of it all—forgotten, invisible, and unwanted.
She tugged at the frayed hem of her borrowed dress, eyes scanning the crowd nervously. Unlike the other girls, she had no friends to chatter with, no family by her side. Her adoptive pack treated her like a burden—an omega orphan taken in out of obligation, not love.
But tonight could change everything.
Tonight, the Moon Goddess will reveal true mates.
And Aria’s wolf, Lyra, stirred restlessly inside her.
“He’s here,” Lyra whispered, her voice low and filled with tension. He’s close. I can feel it.
Aria’s heart thundered. Her palms grew clammy as she dared to look around. Then she saw him.
Kael Donovan.
The Alpha.
Tall, commanding, and devastatingly handsome in a black shirt rolled at the sleeves, his sharp jawline and stormy eyes made every she-wolf swoon. He moved with the power of a predator, his presence impossible to ignore. Around him stood his Beta, his future Luna candidate Savannah Hale, and other high-ranking wolves. No one like Aria.
But the moment Kael’s eyes met hers, the world shifted.
Everything fell silent.
Her breath hitched. His pupils dilated.
The bond snapped into place.
Mate.
The words echoed in her soul. Lyra howled with joy. Aria swayed, overwhelmed with the sudden rush of connection, warmth, and longing.
She stepped forward, eyes shining. “Alpha Kael…”
He flinched.
“No,” he said sharply.
Confusion clouded her features. “What?”
Kael’s voice turned cold, deadly. “You can’t be my mate.”
The crowd quieted.
Savannah tilted her head with a smug smirk. “An omega? The Moon Goddess must be joking.”
Aria’s heart dropped. She looked to Kael, praying he would reconsider. But his gaze was hard and unrelenting.
“I reject you, Aria Winters,” Kael said, his voice echoing through the clearing like a death sentence. “You’re weak, useless, and unworthy of me.”
The bond cracked.
Pain unlike anything she’d ever known tore through her chest. She staggered back, clutching her ribs, gasping for air. Lyra let out a pained whimper inside her mind.
“No, no, this can’t be happening…”
“Reject her before she clings to you,” Savannah hissed.
Kael turned away as if she were filth. “You’ll never belong in my world.”
And with that, the Alpha walked off—leaving her broken in front of the entire pack.
Aria stood frozen, trying to hold herself together. The bond still lingered, half-shattered, tormenting her with its raw edges. Whispers surged around her like venomous waves.
“She really thought she could be Luna?”
“Poor thing. But the Alpha’s right.”
“An omega like her? She should know her place.”
Her vision blurred, but she refused to let them see her cry.
Not here.
Not tonight.
With all the strength she could summon, Aria turned and ran into the woods, her bare feet silent on the moss. The tears came then, hot and wild, her soul ripping with every step. The pain in her chest grew unbearable, but she didn’t stop.
“Why, Moon Goddess?” she cried silently. “Why give me a mate who hates me?”
Behind her, the laughter and music resumed—as if she’d never existed.
As if her soul hadn’t just been torn in half.
---
She ran until the lights disappeared, until the music was gone, and only the rustling of trees and the lonely cry of an owl remained. Finally, she collapsed beside the riverbank, her body heaving with silent sobs.
Lyra was quiet, too quiet.
“I’m sorry,” Aria whispered aloud. “I thought… he’d see me.” I thought I was finally worth something.
The moon reflected in the water, its light kissing her tear-streaked face. Somewhere deep within her, something stirred. A distant memory… a whisper… a flame.
Not from Kael.
Not from any pack.
But something older.
Stronger.
And watching.
