She Wasn’t Supposed to Matter
Lena Carter had never been the kind of woman who attracted attention. She liked it that way. Attention brought questions. Questions brought expectations. And expectations were dangerous when you had spent most of your life learning how to depend only on yourself. So when Sophie dragged her into the most extravagant charity gala she’d ever seen, Lena already knew she was going to regret coming. “You look beautiful,” Sophie whispered. Lena glanced down at her dress. “It was twenty dollars.” Sophie laughed. “And somehow you still look better than half the women in here.” “Please don’t start.” “I’m serious.” Lena rolled her eyes and took a sip of her drink. The ballroom glittered around them. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling. Waiters moved between tables carrying champagne. Music floated through the room while wealthy guests laughed and talked about businesses Lena had only ever read about online. She felt like an intruder. “I’ll be right back,” Sophie said. “Where are you going?” “Bathroom.” “You’ve been saying that for ten minutes.” “Because you keep distracting me.” “Sophie.” But her friend was already disappearing into the crowd. Lena sighed. “Traitor.” She moved toward the balcony. At least there, she could breathe. The moment she stepped outside, cool air brushed against her skin. She closed her eyes. Peace. Finally. “You’re hiding.” Lena opened her eyes. A man stood behind her. She turned. And forgot what she was about to say. He was tall. Very tall. His black suit fit him perfectly, emphasizing broad shoulders and a lean frame. His dark hair was neatly styled, but a few strands had fallen across his forehead. He wasn’t smiling. He didn’t need to. There was something commanding about him. Something that made the entire room seem to belong to him even when he wasn’t inside it. Lena looked away first. “I’m not hiding.” “You’re alone on a balcony at a party.” “I’m enjoying the quiet.” His eyes remained on her. “Same thing.” She frowned. “Do you always analyze strangers?” “Only when they’re interesting.” That caught her off guard. She looked at him again. He was watching her with a strange intensity. Not the kind of look she’d received from men at parties before. This was different. He wasn’t looking at her dress. He was looking at her. She cleared her throat. “Do I know you?” “No.” “Then why are you staring at me?” He took a slow step closer. “I was wondering the same thing.” Lena blinked. “What?” “I don’t usually stare.” “You’re doing it right now.” “I know.” There was no embarrassment in his voice. No attempt to deny it. That confidence irritated her. “You’re arrogant.” A faint smile touched his lips. “So I’ve been told.” “And proud of it?” “Not particularly.” “Could’ve fooled me.” He laughed quietly. It was the first time she saw any real warmth in his expression. And annoyingly, it suited him. “What’s your name?” he asked. “Lena.” “Lena.” The way he repeated it made her stomach flutter. She hated that. “And yours?” “Adrian.” “Adrian what?” His eyes held hers. “Blackwell.” Her expression changed. She knew that name. Everyone did. Adrian Blackwell. Twenty-nine. Billionaire. CEO of Blackwell Holdings. One of the most powerful men in the city. She glanced at him again. “You?” “Yes.” “I thought you’d be older.” His eyebrow rose. “Older?” “You look…” She stopped. “What?” “Never mind.” “Now I’m curious.” “You don’t look twenty-nine.” His mouth curved. “And how old did you think I was?” “Thirty-five.” He laughed. A real laugh this time. Lena couldn’t help smiling. “That’s rude.” “It’s honest.” “I’ll remember that.” “Why?” “Because I don’t forget people who insult me.” She raised an eyebrow. “Should I be worried?” His expression changed. The humor disappeared. He looked at her for a long moment. “No.” His voice was quieter. “You shouldn’t be worried about me.” Something about the way he said it made her heart beat faster. Before she could respond, Sophie appeared through the balcony doors. “There you are!” Lena turned. Sophie stopped when she saw Adrian. Her eyes widened. “Oh.” Lena sighed. “Don’t.” Sophie ignored her. “Mr. Blackwell.” Adrian nodded. “Sophie.” Lena looked between them. “You know him?” “We’ve met.” Sophie gave Lena a look that clearly said We’ll discuss this later. Adrian’s attention returned to Lena. “Are you leaving soon?” “Probably.” “I’ll take you home.” Lena stared at him. “No.” His expression barely changed. “I wasn’t asking.” She folded her arms. “Then you definitely won’t be taking me home.” Sophie looked like she wanted to disappear. Adrian simply stared at Lena. Then, unexpectedly, he smiled. “You really don’t like being told what to do.” “No.” “I noticed.” He stepped closer. His voice dropped. “That’s going to make things difficult.” Lena’s heart skipped. “For who?” His eyes stayed on hers. “For me.” She didn’t know what to say to that. Fortunately, Sophie grabbed her arm. “We should go.” Lena allowed herself to be pulled away. But before she left the balcony, she looked back. Adrian was still watching her. And this time, there was nothing casual about his expression. He looked almost… Possessive. The thought made her stomach twist. She quickly looked away. ⸻ Later that night, Adrian stood beside the ballroom windows. His business partner was talking. Adrian wasn’t listening. His eyes were fixed on the crowd. More specifically, on one woman. Lena. She was laughing at something Sophie had said. Her head tilted back slightly. Her eyes bright. Beautiful. Unaware of how many people were looking at her. Adrian’s jaw tightened when a young man approached her. The man said something. Lena smiled politely. Adrian’s fingers tightened around his glass. “Who is that?” His partner followed his gaze. “Lena Carter?” “You know her?” “No. Sophie Bennett’s friend.” Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Find out.” His partner looked surprised. “Why?” Adrian didn’t answer. Because he didn’t know. That was the problem. He had met thousands of people in his life. He had forgotten most of them before the night ended. But he couldn’t stop watching Lena. He couldn’t stop thinking about her voice. Her stubbornness. The way she had looked directly at him without being impressed by his name or his money. And when the young man beside her made her laugh again, Adrian felt something dark and unfamiliar settle inside his chest. He didn’t like it. Not even a little. Because Lena Carter wasn’t supposed to matter. He had met her less than three hours ago. She was a stranger. A beautiful, irritating stranger. And yet, as Adrian watched her walk toward the exit, one thought crossed his mind. I don’t want anyone else getting close to her. He set his glass down. Then followed her.
